EXPLAINING DISNEY #4.5
Created as a companion video to my series of DISNEY EVOLUTION videos (specifically 'Evolution of MICKEY MOUSE Over 90 Years (1928-2019) Explained'), I take a look at the vocal evolution of the character as I compare and explain the voices of all of Mickey's official voice actors over time, including Walt Disney, Carl W. Stalling, Clarence Nash, Joe Twerp, Jimmy Macdonald, Wayne Allwine, Les Perkins, Alan Young, Peter Renaday, Stan Freberg Bret Iwan and Chris Diamantopolous.

When Walt Disney passed away in 1966 our family was sitting around the dinner table. I mentioned that he was the voice of Mickey Mouse and Mom said,"He created Mickey Mouse!" I know now that both of those statements were only partially true,:-)

Walt Disney was a surprisingly good voice actor...I like how akward he made Mickey sound, it really made the charcter seem more charming. Out of the modern V.A.s, I like Chris better. It's a different take on Mickey's voice, but it's still cartoony and funny to hear, while the other V.A. is more shrill at this point

I agree! For someone who didn't have any other acting experience as far as I know, he really put a lot of expression into his performances. There's no doubt his voice helped define the character that so many people have loved through the years.

I gotta say, I was surprised to learn Walt himself voiced Mickey. Even more upon hearing his voice for the character. And yet even MORE upon hearing that the voice he gave Mickey is incredibly close to what we have now and how people imagine Mickey today. It's not even a gradual evolution of Mickey's voice, but a refinement over the years, almost each building on Walt's. I'd say Wayne was the one who finalized Mickey's voice. Maybe because he had one of the most roles as the mouse and for the longest time.

It’s truly amazing how similar the voice still is to Walt Disney’s original Mickey Mouse voice... yeah there are subtle differences between all of the VAs, and I’m sure hardcore Mickey fans can spot these subtleties and differentiate which VA did what, but over all the general voice of Mickey had stayed so consistent that I never once felt like any clip in this video sounded off putting... each and every voice actor did an amazing job at Mickey. Disney really should be proud of this astounding level of consistency.

There's a fullness to Wayne Allwine's Mickey voice that he didn't have in the beginning, probably took him a while to develop it. Idk how else to describe it, but it's that fullness that makes his Mickey sound the least like someone doing a voice. And that's not dunking on any of the others, they all did great jobs and each have their strengths, Allwine just sounds the most natural.

Yeah its really interesting. It was rough in the first few clips, but by the 90s he was perfect. Possibly the best Mickey ever.

Yeah and I think I know why. Everyone else is talking in a straight falsetto, whereas he’s using what’s referred to in music as “mixed register”. He’s mixing his natural chest voice with the higher, lighter more airy falsetto that men have and usually use to voice Mickey. Wayne’s voice is BY FAR my favorite because of this attribute and other reasons as well

Wayne Allwine is my childhood and he has always put on some pretty great performances when he was around. Chris Diamantopoulos is a worthy successor, and part of me wishes he was around more. Great deliveries.

Apparently, when someone else does the voice of Mickey Mouse, they all say the same thing: "I'm filling in for the boss." If I'm not mistaken, it was Disney's voice we heard in that Mickey Mouse short that aired before Frozen. (archive footage was used)

Walt Disney and Wayne Allwine were always my two favorites. Wayne’s voice was the one I grew up with. Was sad when he passed away. Still remember when his wife Russi Taylor died.

Tbh, I connect with Wayne Allwine the most. He voiced Mickey from the time my mom was in her early teens until I was 16, so whenever I heard Mickey speak, it was Wayne.

Especially house of mouse Brings back when I used to get off school elementary lay in bed having a bowl of fruit watching on Disney channel. & it chokes me up just thinking about it because he’s really Mickey he really gave us our childhood & reason we never grown tired of it. Let’s face it We love Wayne Alwine & I can’t think of more words to describe his legacy. Bless Wayne playing Mickey in KH2 I enjoyed it despite it being mixed with FF which I never cared for but Disney being crossed over was amazing & it’s the Maine reason I played kingdom hearts

@@leonmystique9372I would have agreed with you if it weren't for Once Upon a Studio! He voiced Mickey in it and he did a wonderful job. I was surprised he was able to play a toned-down version of Mickey so well, wish he was the main VA. No hate to Bret, I think he's got a good impression, I just don't care much for his acting. Less emotion, at least from what I've heard.

Wow. When you listen to what Wayne was able to do for that Kingdom Hearts II clip compared to what Brett did for Kingdom Hearts III, it’s staggering. Wayne never sounded much like Walt, but he definitely knew how to tailor his vocal performance to the requirements of the work he was in. He was a sparkly mascot in the kiddy cartoons and a slightly casual and measured presence in Kingdom Hearts. Whereas Brett in Kingdom Hearts III still sounds like a kiddy show mascot even when Mickey is stood next to grimdark anime characters about to kill the main cast. Wayne could convince you Mickey had an actual strength beneath the pep. Brett... doesn’t quite have the range yet.

In fairness, Bret was rather abruptly thrust into the general role, as he was supposed to become Wayne's understudy. Unfortunately, Wayne passed before they could even meet, so he's basically been forced to fumble in the dark (unlike with Tony Anselmo in relation to Clarence Nash). Considering that, I can't really fault him for what he lacks.

The payoff for playing Mickey for 30 years is over time men’s vocal chords get weaker women’s generally stay the same that’s why Russi has been able to play Minnie since the mid 80s with no major difference in audio quality but Wayne’s voice is slightly lower in his last work in kingdom hearts and clubhouse that’s why Brett’s inheritance and first work is so jarring because it’s old to young if that makes sense

Brett sounded really deep in that clip. I'm willing to bet it was poor voice direction that made him sound so off, because he's had a few Kingdom Hearts spin-offs before to get used to the role.

My favorite voice of Mickey Mouse was without a doubt Wayne Allwine, he was the voice I grow up with during my childhood years and the voice I always associate when I hear Mickey Mouse, followed by Bret Iwan in 2nd place, Walt Disney in 3rd place and Jimmy MacDonald in 4th place.

Childhood will always be defined my Mickey's Once Upon A Christmas. Wayne brought a real sense of sincerity and range to the character. And yeah, Chris is an excellent successor.

FreeSpiritPaulette It’s such a shame that He didn’t take Wayne’s place. He did such an outstanding job playing as Mickey in a few of the 2000’s Mickey Mouse shorts. His Mickey Mouse impression sounded more energetic than Wayne’s in my opinion. I couldn’t even tell the difference. It just baffles me why Disney didn’t hire him. I mean, he even voiced Axel in the kingdom hearts series and yet he sadly didn’t voice Mickey in birth by sleep when Bret took over. But it could be that he was busy with other things. I have mixed feelings with Bret Irwin. Sometimes he sounds like Mickey and sometimes he doesn’t and can sound pretty awkward. His voice is too high even for Mickey and sounds really soft. But again, Flynn’s impression is outstanding!

Just ranking the 5 main voices, my top 5 are: 1. Wayne Allwine 2. Chris Diamantopoulos 3. Walt Disney 4. Jimmy MacDonald 5. Bret Iwan Honestly, I don’t really even like Bret Iwan. Any of the understudies were better than him frankly.

Lucky Dragon Agree to Disagree but Bret isn’t that bad as Mickey Mouse, in fact he was supposed to meet Wayne Allwine and be an understudy for him when he was ill prior before he passed away from diabetes in May 2009.

I absolutely adore these types of videos, I really hope you continue them! Just a thing I noticed but I believe 6:17 is a recording of Wayne Allwine singing Yankee Doodle and 9:45 is one of the earlier recordings of Bret Iwan's Mickey!

Couldn't find any sources pointing to Allwine having done a re-recording of the Yankee Doodle Mickey album - but you could be correct. A few have pointed out that Club House episode, but I have cross-checked the episodes I used. @@DaveLeeDownUnder i was probably one of those others who pointed out the pop star Mickey episode, my source being my own ears being able to tell the difference between Bret and Wayne’s Mickey, and this reference from Disney wiki on Season 4 (THE LAST SEASON OF MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE) of Mickey Mouse: Season 4 Season 4 This is the fourth and final season of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. And the first time, Bret Iwan took over the voice of Mickey as Wayne Allwine died in 2009. The first episode aired in November 5, 2012, while the rest of the episodes aired in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and the series' final episode aired on November 6, 2016. 1. Mickey And Donald Have A Farm 2. A Goofy Fairy Tale Basically all the prior episodes listed had Bret’s voice in it and it was the last season of Mickey Mouse clubhouse (in 2012 I might add, a full 3 years after Wayne’s passing), and if you watch the whole pop star Minnie episode yourself and not just the opening, you’ll be able to tell more of a difference in Mickey’s voice compared to Wayne’s voice, because it’s Bret doing it. I love your video! HOWEVER, you made a fatal mistake. The intro of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse that you inserted (9:32) is NOT Wayne Allwine's intro. In fact, that is the replaced intro, voiced by Bret Iwan after Allwine's passing (which occurs from season 4 onwards).

My thoughts on each of the main voice actors: Walt Disney’s depiction of Mickey’s voice started it all, he made him sound like the legend he wanted and has the perfect fitting charm to it. Jimmy MacDonald is good, although Mickey sounds like he’s hiding a foreign accent. Wayne Allwine was a perfect successor, he actually gives Mickey’s voice more of an emotional tone when he squeals in anger or sadness, and he always sounds energetic when he’s in the right mood. Bret Iwan honestly sounds more like an impression of Mickey than his actual voice. He does try his best to sound like Mickey but he usually sounds off. Chris Diamantopoulos is a better successor who truly captures the character well and even sounds more like Disney’s depiction of Mickey. I wish they used him more.

Out of the main voices Walt Disney: I know he's the original voice actor and set the idea of what Mickey Mouse's voice is supposed to sound like, but there's too much variation. Sometimes he has a high and squeaky voice (what we're used to). Other times it's a lot lower. Wayne Allwine: He has the voice I'm most used to and familiar with and he's the most consistent. He also put more "jollyness" and enthusiasm to the voice so it doesn't just sound like a man talking in falsetto. Brett Iwan: I don't understand the hate. Out of all the voice actors on this list, he sounds the most similar to Wayne Allwine- everyone's favourite. Initially, the voice was a tad too high pitched to what I'm used to, but over the years, he came a bit closer to Wayne's voice. I think he still has to work on the consistency, but he's not as bad as people make him out to be. Chris Diamantopulos: Not many people know that the reason why there are currently two Mickey Mouse voice actors (though Brett Iwan is still the official voice of Mickey Mouse) is because for the 2013 series, they wanted someone who's voice more closely matched that of Walt Disney's. Personally, I don't hate Chris' impression. It's just not what I'm used to.

Fantastic new spinoff series. I love it. However, and may ears may be deceiving me, but you may want to double check Wayne’s final clip with the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse intro. I’m not 100% sure, but that sounds more like Bret Iwan. It’s possible you grabbed an intro from a later season. It’s also possible it’s completely fine and I’m wrong. Figured I’d at least throw the concern out there.

for some reason, I really liked Iwan’s voice when he first started as Mickey Mouse because it sounded very similar as Allwine’s but not as much when he did Mickey and the Roadster Racers. I grew up with Allwine’s voice so of course he has to be my number one lol. the new VA for the shorts, Chris, has a unique voice that I wouldn’t say compares to the others but has its charm. it’s very distinct

Thank you! Yes, just the one time only! I guess Jimmy MacDonald wasn’t available for voice duties at the time - or they didn’t want to use him for an album. Interesting to see that *most* Mickey audio recordings specifically for albums don’t use the actual voice artists.
