Video summary: - don't do shaking jaw 🤣 to do vibrato - breathing is key to achieving good vibrato - sing as you speak (i.e. dont mimic others - singing is just elongated speech) - next video breathing discussed
He's sooo right about using your natural speaking voice to sing with. For months I was trying to sound like my favorite vocalists, which resulted in vocal strain, non consistent phrasing, and inability to maintain proper pitch. When I finally accepted how I sounded, EVERYTHING became easier, and I actually found that my voice was beautiful.
I'm a voice teacher myself and I am so happy to hear you say that singing is enlongeated speech! I like this. The breathing is the main thing. Vibrato is something that comes from good singing technique. Thank you!
Thanx a lot Mr. Eric! I was really facing a serious agony vibrating from my stomach, but, your video really relieved and helped me a lot. I think I'll have to show your video to my music teacher and tell him "NO STOMACH USING"....Once again I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Love you and your Videos.....!
I have my vibrato now! I'm so proud! thank you very much! everybody who wants to achieve their vibrato, just follow everything that he says! At the start you won't notice it, but as you progress, you'll be surprised you have it!
izaiaz12 I agree, he is better than my high school music teacher and my college music director. I promote his program and his videos to my performing arts students and my theater colleagues. I strongly advise them to purchase his course. Some of them say they notice an improvement almost immediately. I have been singing all of my life, but his methods improved my vocals tremendously! I used to HATE my voice, and I did not care about compliments from others or the standing ovations after I performed, I still hated the way I sound whether I was singing or speaking! However, after using Eric Arceneaux's methods every morning, I love my vocals now, and I also like my speaking voice too. Moreover, I am noticing a few copy cats out there, but Eric is the BEST, better than the rest!
But. But. Your 'made voice' sounds like an angel. I mean the other sounds good, but the 'made' is like liquid candy, it's just sooo goood and beautiful. And I mean YOURS in particular, not a general statement for me or anyone.
...If you're willing to do the work, then you can totally develop a great singing voice. How great depends on you and your patience/work ethic. It's not necessarily always a quick and easy process, but it's definitely a worthwhile process.
This video was from 2007, but I've been dying to understand what my natural voice is. I was trying so hard to find my voice, and you've helped me feel more confident in my natural speaking voice. Thank you so much!
this guy is the best vocal teacher ever, he helped me out with singing but also how to talk more clearly. you definitely changed my life man, thanks, thanks for everything
Vibrato is greatly hindered when the throat tenses. There's a very good chance that your tensing your throat, and possibly even your stomach, on your highest notes. The key is learning to stay open and relaxed at the top part of your range. I'll do a video series on belting soon, in the new year.
This is the literal video that completely changed my singing voice when I was like 17. Now I have a recital next month as a contralto and you cant shut me up 🤣
wow it's been a decade since this came out. You were the first vocal coach I learnt from lol Now I'm 22 (rather than 12) I get the joy of going to uni for Singing & Songwriting Music!
is the whole "made voice" supposed to be for beginners who haven't found their own voice yet? because there's lots of artist who sound very different in their speaking voice and singing voice. is this just a tip until we really find where our voice feels most comfortable and strong?
I think the point is to find a voice that is your own, and you are comfortable with. Experimenting with different vocal sounds, qualities and timbres is great, but coming straight at singing with a voice that's an unnatural mimic of something else is going to limit you. Learning to sing in your natural voice allows you to gain full control and understanding of your voice- to then do with it whatever you want! Learning to sing in an artificial voice restricts you from the beginning
yo i never hit you up before about the appreciation i have inside my name is kemar...and i am passion for music and singing away for my life so you been there for me for about four-five years now...so thank a wicked million Eric...luv.
I didn't know vibrato was that easy to do. It came naturally and once you said to sing it like you say it...made a lot sense to me. Old but gold video.
This is great. I especially enjoyed the part about not using the "gospel mouth". Also, finding and using your own voice like your speaking voice. Thank you!
You have some amazing advice. I've studied for years classical art forms like charcoal, pen & ink, oil painting and sculpture but never felt comfortable in expressing myself through song. What I love about your approach is you aren't caught up on showing how well you sing. You seem truly dedicated to helping your viewers sing and express themselves better. I LOVE IT!
Wow! it works, it works, just like that! Wow! I watched your video,I said "Oh say can you see" and then sang it and there came the vibrato without strain whatsoever,I could hardly recognise my own voice. Eric you're the best, thank you so much!
"The same ease you use to talk is the same ease you should use to sing"....so simple, yet so brilliant. I never thought about it that way. Thank you Eric!
You are SO good. I'm a a piano teacher/Juilliard grad .... Baroque is my speciality. I'm interested in Counter Tenors .. and Mezzo Sopranos. I've never had a formal voice lesson, apart from the standard Solfege ... which is more for sight reading than voice. In this short video you NAILED the main problem. Which is to work with the "speaking" voice. Amazing difference .... in a few moments I could see my real voice emerge. And the tenseness vanish. You're a gem!
So I watched both videos, and did the exercises in part two. I stand up, pick the song that I needed to use the Vibrato in, sang it, and BAMmMmMmMmM! VIBRATOoOoOoOoOoO! Kudos to you, sir! You did awesome!
I had taken choir in high school my senior year 2009, I wish my teacher was more informed on terms(because she said a vibrato was glottal), I also wish I'd have had you as my instructor. I learned more in a 6:30 video of yours than I learned in a month that I stayed with her choir class. I'm a baritone and she also had stated she didn't really understand how to help me improve. I hope in the 14 some odd years since you posted this video Sir, that people flocked to you for guidance, knowledge, and comfort.
i have had a couple of vocal teachers but they've never ever made as much sense in a bunch of lessons as you have in this one video! You're amazing. *watches on....* Thank you SO much. Singing is such a huge important part of my life.
Don't take my word for it but I think what he's saying is you should LEARN to use your natural voice for when you are developing your skills and then once you have mastered your singing you can experiment with different singing styles. It boils down to the philosophy "You gotta LEARN the rules before you can break em"
What's the difference between a shaky voice and vibrato? I can't tell if I have a shaky voice because only sometimes I can get vibrato (at least I think it's vibrato). I don't do any muscular things to get the wavy sounds, it just comes out when I sing silently and sometimes when I sing a little louder.
totally awesome~ i was in chorus for 5 years and i develped straight singing and i didn't know how to develop vibrato and my teacher said some people just don't have them---it made me so sad~ after watching ur video i start to understand the concept~ it's about let it be free~ i was taught to get more support (more air)which tense up my vocal cord when not let it go
Everything you have said makes perfect sense, and I have been told this before, that i have good vibrato, the only thing is practicing correctly so that you don't hang on to the bad habits, I'm will continue to follow your lessons however it's nothing like getting feedback from a coach, but right now with money being tight...well you know...thanks and keep up the good work...
when you mentioned sing like you talk Bread comes to mind (singer, "Guitar Man", from the 1970s). l'm a metal guy and although l sing, l'm no singer. l always loved the vocal tracks from this song exactly because he sings like he talks, (no power). The man's voice is so soothing, relaxed and the falsettos he does are natural as if he doesnt even have to try, they just come out. Every time l try sing l try to imitate him
I've been looking around for good vibrato lessons and this is the best one! It's great that you say not to change your voice! Very true that you find your voice's unique character by letting it come out naturally. Thanks dude!
I literally looked up "EricArceneaux vibrato" on youtube because you are the best vocal coach I've found on youtube and vibrato is a weakness in my voice; I find it really hard. I definitely didn't expect the video to be 13 years old, but still super helpful ahaha
How old is "Old"? I recently joined a church choir and at the age of 67, without any music background. With vibrato and his other free voice training exercises, I progressed to being a cantor in weekday mass. Mahalo Eric from an old man in Hawaii.
As a guitar teacher, I encourage my students to practise the songs with the CD. Once they have the accompaniment perfected, I then work on singing in a key that suits their voice. This teaches them that we all have different vocal ranges & that we don't need to copy the singer of the song. Over the years, nearly every male singer that I work with, wants to sing the song in too high a key in order to sound like the CD. Once they find the correct key for them, things improve considerably.
Dude, that's some of the best singing advice I've gotten. I took lessons from a guy for 2 years and he was always trying to make me sing Josh Groban stuff and saying I should try to imitate his voice. But what you said about singing just being elongated speech is 100% true and works way better for my voice.
i dont have a good speak voice, so i have to make my voice a little bit deeper that it sounds better. can I not do it ? is it wrong to do that ? i mean not everyone has a nice voice like u ....
This is funny: I remember watching this vid like 2 years ago, and I just couldn't get a vibrato out of my throat. Now 2 years later I can vibrate pretty well! It just took an enormous amount of practising! So everyone who is desperate like I was 2 years ago: you will get there, no matter what your age is! I'm 25 now, and my vibrato is still getting better every day!
I never knew that you are suppose to sing with your speaking voice. I just did that and it sounds so much better to. So far two of your lessons have improved me greatly. Now I'm going to practice and see if I see results. love your lessons
You're soooo CUTE!!!! Just had to say.. Also I've subscribed cuz not only for that reason, but also you have the best sound i've personally heard from a RU-vid voice coach. Thx for that! Will b watcing ;)
notes: -Don't shake/slap stomach -Don't shake jaw breathing exercises! breath is your sound, the foundation -don't produce vibrato artificially, use your speaking voice 5:22 maybe try practicing vibrato with 2 notes slowly
