This is Miami Viceplay -- an homage to Crockett and Tubbs riding in the Ferrari through late night Miami, on their way to a potentially deadly meeting. It blew everyone away at the time. The setting -- the 80's TV look, the fog, the lights, the old car -- relate back to that. The brilliant arrangement and singing make it a masterpiece.

I’ve always known that Layne is a brilliant arranger. It’s nice when a reactor can truly appreciate his arrangements. Timing is everything. Patrons just received their next video to be released. And if it had been that one today for you, there’s a good chance you would have been bawling into your mic. Don’t miss it!

that "synth" sound you commented on at the start, is Cesar's voice with an effect on it 🙂

I love how they can re-interpret a song to create a new classic. It is a fine line to walk. They did a great job with the 80s Miami Vice vibe complete with the glitchy VHS feel to it. I loved that stomp sequence. It sets up the whole second half of the song. Layne outdid himself. As the one who arranged it, he was responsible for the mood, the venue, and the video editing as well as the initial sound edit (and sang too!). It was filmed behind PattyCake Productions which he co-owns and it was Layne’s dad’s car.

VoicePlay arrangements are second to none. Their harmonie are so juiccy and sexy. Taking iconic songs and reimagining is what they've been doing lately: Dream On, Nothing Else Matters and this one. And they do it brilliantly. I think oldies like me will listen for three minutes, and longer, to simple songs, but young people are a different breed. :)

I love nothing more than a true student of music reacting to Voiceplay. I would love for you to experience an arrangement masterpiece of theirs called In the Hall of the Mountain King. They take what is a repetitive instrumental piece and raise it to what I would consider one of the best pieces of music I have ever heard. As a bonus, the video itself is wildly entertaining.

Firstly thank you for generously supporting my channel. Yes! It’s been too long since I have looked in on Voiceplay. I’ll add Hall of the Mountain King to my list. I am familiar with the classical version. I can only imagine what these guys do with it.

It seems some guys love to compose great songs when they get divorced. The theme for the movie Laura (which I was named for) was done just after the composer's divorce, and it was marvelously haunting!

Inna Gadda Da Vida was one of those long-winded setups. My husband took it and recut it so it would run for an hour. So it brought back so many memories.

When you mentioned a simple arrangement, the first thing that popped into my head was "Postmodern Jukebox: Every Breath You Take f. Jacklyn McSpadden. They turn Sting's stalker classic into a R&B lament. It was my earworm for months.

Thank you for this reaction, it added things to my perception of the song that I really didn't think of on my own. Your competence in the matter of production provides insights that a person like me, who doesn't know jack about "the secret world and magic of production", couldn't even imagine... Or, worse, could imagine totally wrong and then believe it 😁. I think this song is so rich in small stuff, like details, little runs, notes thrown here and there, harmonies and so on that one needs a few listens to get his arms around it. 🙂 And it sounds to me as if them, recording their parts and layers, and Ed Boyer, who does the final mixing, found a way to keep their voices super clear, well blended, yet totally separated one from each other, so that even with my eyes closed I can HEAR who's singing what, and the spatial position from which he sings. That adds something, I can't explain myself. 🙂 I wonder what Phil Collins himself would think of this cover. 🙂 I believe that Leland Sklar would be proud of Geoff's bass line, and that every one did a wonderful job. 🙂 Thank you again for your reaction and the way you do it. See you next time!

You mention that chain gang/gospel darkness in sound. Another song that really has that sound (at least for me) is A Hundred Ten in the Shade by John Fogerty with The Fairfield Four singing backup. Granted, it is not acapella but it is an absolutely underrated song. Can you tell I'm a Fogerty/CCR fan? 😊

Yeah, never really been one for gatekeeping. Although I will say there are times when I hear a cover and wonder if it was really worth doing. But I tend to keep those opinions to myself. Having said that I would take a gamble on Voice Play getting it right 100 times out of 100.

Love the concept of Enchroma. After surgery for my cataracts, I picked up a lot of UV. I'd put on a pair of sage green slacks, and walk outside in blue-gray pants. The flowers I had planted before surgery were radically different colors. It's better with a pair of UV protectant glasses. On the way home one night, driving past a UF IFAS station (ag) I looked out in the field and there was an amazing huge purple light out there. I asked my husband if he saw it. He hadn't, turned around and still didn't see it. We drove out into the field and eventually we got close enough that he could see a tiny purple light. Does Enchroma make contact lenses for people like you? I used to be -6 diopters - very near sighted and wore Cooper's lenses because they cut out a lot of UV and I did a lot of tractoring, brush-hogging, stump grinding and really liked the protection. The new lenses in my eyes corrected my vision to 20/20 and had to go to sunglasses. I considered getting no correction of the Cooper's contacts. Never did. Thanks for the reaction here. I grew up in 1965 9th grade and felt like I hit the mother lode in music. I loved this one of Phil Collins. We went to concerts: Steppenwolf, Jefferson Airplane, Mothers of Invention, Blood Sweat and Tears, Reba McIntyre, Judds final tour, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Jimmy Buffett, Eagles, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, not a singer but fun George Carlin. I do have a reactor who goes through the song twice, first time not stopping but commenting periodlically, then goes back and breaks down the really cool parts. It obviously takes longer, but most stay for the whole thing and lets the reactor uncover a lot.
@PrymalChaos
@PrymalChaos Год назад
As far as I know Enchroma don't make contacts. I suspect the reason is that they work much better outside in strong daylight. The way that the work is that they attenuate all of the colour spectrum you CAN see down to a level where it matches more closely to the parts of the spectrum you can't see properly. Then your eyes adjust to the darkness and everything looks more 'even'. That's why they work best as sunglasses. They're too dark to work inside, because it's darker and your eyes can only adjust to the darkness so much. There are indoor versions, however I find them to be a bit more subtle. Again better if you're looking at a bright screen, not so much a picture book.

It would be nice to see what they could do when not doing a cover. I guess they do their own material and with their virtuosity that should be a ride. What they do here is great, all their covers are great, it just makes me wonder, what if? Perhaps they have their own material but, people choose not to react or analyse it because its easier to work within the original songs framework? On your other point, perhaps artists need to challenge the trend to reduce human attention and extend the frames to improve rather than decrease human focus? Grind core & Punk's short song format & The Residents 'Commercial album', were ahead of their time with this & it is a worrying trend sociologically. Next we'll have Voice Play covering 'You suffer' by Napalm death with no one understanding the irony.
