OMG, what a sweet pup!! The yawns! I don’t feel like Cesar is getting the props he deserves for his vocals here. Totally different timbre-he sounds like an entirely different singer, three different times in this piece. And he’s not only doing baritone backup singing, but he’s responsible for quite a lot of the high harmonies, as when he’s backing Eli’s solo. Plus the acting! Great reaction, Mortius, and add at least another kiss for your puppy!
Even the Men in Black can't touch these guys. Great reaction and sweet puppy! Also props to Mason for the lip-reading and water drinking sound effects! Lol.
I feel like everyone has been geeking out over Geoff’s low notes lately so Layne said “oh yeah well then listen to me beatbox one of the most iconic drum lines in history”
I think that synth sound is just vocals (I think Cesar's and maybe Eli's) with that effect on their voice? But they just keep getting more crazy creative with their vocal skills every video, who knows. lol.
It's definitely Cesar (with some fun post-processing, of course). If you watch him in the wide shot during J's second line, you can see it in the timing of his hand movements. He did something similar in Running Up That Hill, too. :)
Yeah, my assumption is that they've used electronic production effects of some kind to transform a vocal into that synth-brass sound. I'd be interested to know how *much* they transformed it, i.e., how close they managed to get to the sound they were after in the original recording, and how much they had to play with the effects to get it perfect.
You are just fun to watch. :D And Mason is awesome! Of all the reactors I watch, he's the only "behind-the-scenes" guy who ever gets to play in front of the curtain and we love it when he does! Also, that is one sweet puppy. 🥰 I just spent some time reviewing VoicePlay's video list for the last 18 months. It is staggering, but offensively low on views. They need to get better promotion coverage! 02/04/2022 Dragonborn Comes (2.2M) 02/25/2022 We Don't Talk About Bruno (4.7M) 04/08/2022 Dream On (928K) 05/13/2022 Enemy (1.2M) 06/10/2022 Good 4 U (652K) 07/01/2022 Running Up That Hill (678K) 08/12/2022 I Can't Make You Love Me (302K) 09/16/2022 Hall of the Mountain King (676K) 10/07/2022 Hide and Seek (Ding Dong) (1.1M) 12/02/2022 The Chipmunk Song (264K) 01/13/2023 Nothing Else Matters (1.4M) 02/03/2023 In My Room (216K) 03/17/2023 Golden Hour (310K) 04/07/2023 Valhalla Calling (1.4M) 05/12/2023 Seven Nation Army (359K) 06/16/2023 In The Air Tonight (150K) Every one of these puts them in the top tier of musical performances, NEVER MIND that they are a capella, which just adds to the amazingness. (I kept wanting to add more names to the list, like the Wicked Medley and Hoist the Colors, etc., but you have to stop somewhere!)
"It is staggering, but offensively low on views." Agreed. Especially since their musicality and arranging skills have matured exponentially in that time.
I love the "You challenged J, so now you have to deal with whole gang" vibe of their entrances. Don't challenge these guys to a riff-off, that's for sure. Also, this is the song I recommend for first-time VoicePlay viewers. It has nearly everything the guys are known for. Eli gets some great "rock god" moments that only he could pull off. Cesar's beautiful voice supporting *everyone* (reminds me of being an alto & mezzo soprano back in choir). J.None is part of the song and that is always a treat. Geoff flexes both ends of his range. Layne not only gets to sing, and his vocals are always a welcome addition, but he also pulls some serious beatbox shenanigans. Honestly, the only thing missing is VioLayne, but they managed to do so much in what is easily one of my favorites of their works. Where would the violin even be added? We have Nothing Else Matters for that, which is my go-to second song for newcomers. XD (3 = We Don't Talk About Bruno, 4 = This is Halloween, 5 = The Lion Sleeps Tonight)
This had a stand out visual moment too, IMO. Can we talk about that absolutely LETHAL side eye Cesar threw on “I would not lend a hand”?! That is now my working definition of “side eye”. Also, lol Mason! Fantastic job of covering. ❤
Love Phil, but this is better IMHO. So glad they kept with the 80's look. That car is Layne's dad's and was most likely in the garage they practiced in when they were 4:2:Five or before.
I think we need to prepare Mortius for VoicePlay by getting him a glass of warm milk, A teddy bear and a weighted blanket. He needs a safe place for when he breaks.😉
Oh, boy...I can see this one broke you as well. This song is so iconic, and they made it fabulous!! I just do not understand how they do what they do and get better with each and every song!! Loved your reaction to this outstanding cover Mortius.
Love watching your reactions. Glad to see others that simply cannot handle how incredible they are. Cute pup too, tho not letting her listen could be considered animal abuse XD. Have a great weekend.
While we all love geoff sometimes when they make his base more subtle like in some of this piece where you more feel the base than hear it it rounds it out more without overwhelming... although especially on Mortius' channel we all love the overwelming segments :D Mason awesome editting as normal :D And super adorable puppy!
In the 80's the Miami Vice TV show pioneered the use of popular music as a script device as well as in trailers. If you lived in Miami then you'd have seen guys all over the place wearing Miami Vice clothes, driving similar cars, driving similar boats, living the show. This song in particular was in sync with the show's vibe. The old car, the lights, the 80's TV look, this is Miami Viceplay.
After I watched this for the sixth or seventh time, I realized that there's a new stylistic signature in VoicePlay's arrangements (I've seen it in "Nothing Else Matters," "Golden Hour," "Seven Nation Army," and now this), where the arrangement builds in intensity and complexity, and then suddenly drops back to simplicity, and ending on a quiet, gentle, note. The analogy I came up with is it's like being taken up in an airplane for skydiving, and you climb to the clouds, have the adrenaline rush as you leave the plane behind. Then the parachute opens, and you land soft as a feather.
@@joyfulyes I think they probably have, but this year is when I really started to notice it. I think they've been experimenting and perfecting until it's ~chef's kiss~.
@@jennifersmith8923 I re-listened to that just the other day (while coming up with my own list of "best representations of What VoicePlay is/has been/has become") and noticed the same thing. In contrast, there are the songs that end at the peak of energy: Phantom of the Opera, Moana Medley, Little Mermaid Medley, Wicked Medley (Rachel Potter ones, I just noticed, typing out that list). Though there may be others.
Thank you Mason for putting the whipped cream and cherry on top of an already gourmet feast of sound. Perfect. Mortius, your enthusiasm always puts a smile on my face. Your reactions are on my daily. Thank you. And just love your puppies. It’s so nice to see them. The best.
This is my favorite song from Phil Colins. I watched someone else react to the original back in January. I hadn't heard it in a while and had never seen the concert version. You should take a look because having that fresh in my mind helped me truly appreciate what Voiceplay did with this. I had never realized that Phil was singing this while he was drumming.
the beginning is an easier sound to make beatboxing if it isnt synth. Whats more likely is Laime is doing a beatbox sound with a synth overlaying it in production.
I don't know if this is what Layne does, but my kids can make those sounds, because they play wind instruments. What it sounds like is triple tonguing. How to triple tongue is saying Ta ta ka as you get proficient you speed it up. Double and triple tonguing is a common practice with wind incrementalist. Double tonguing is ta ka tak ta ka.
It's a good thing your dog got tired and was happy to lay down. I don't think she would have survived the rest of the reaction if you had still been holding her.
They definitely did a lot of tossing and made it all swirl like something being in the air tonight 💞Another win for VoicePlay - looks like it's naptime for both the puppy and Mortius 😆
You have found the secret to breaking the reactors...Layne, he did it with his violayne in nothing else matters and with his vocal percussion in Vahalla calling
This video should be titled how may times does mortius take his headphones off in shock and excitement. I honestly think this may be the most you’ve taken them off in a while lol!❤😂
This song by them is so intricate that I had to this to it 5 times before I felt like I got it. When they go full out it is called a glotica attack. New term I just heard and I thought you would like it.
Great reaction as always. I am always entertained by watching you slowly meltdown as Voiceplay does their thing. However, the "shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" from Mason at 12:49 broke me for a solid 2 minutes. Mostly a problem because I was watching it while as work and I was trying to keep my laughing quiet.
You would really REALLY like Sierra Eagleson's cover of In The Air Tonight. She does a more subdued version, but oh man her voice is a warm cup of coffee on a cold, rainy, day.
have you ever reacted to anything by citizen soldier? if not could you check out some of their songs sometime please? your reactions are awesome and hilarious
i do appologise but was it chera or carrot? (currently have a really bad cold so my hearing is a bit weird. yes i have a cold in summer trust me to confuse nature haha, and yes i get heat strokes in winter coz i like to be special haha)
Idk if you have had two dogs before or not. But as someone with 4 small dogs and one Ella sized having the puppy higher is a dominance thing. Food for thought. I did the same thing when I was younger.
Mortius, loved the reaction even though it broke you. Unfortunately, though, I must yell at you again, per the instructions in your description box since you forgot the link to the original. Also, Mason's interpretation of you was spot on. 🤣
Aaaah, my weakness. Puppy time is the best time. Was waiting for you to get to this one, absolutely blew my mind when I first heard it, glad to see it blew yours as well lol.
There was a time when you could not turn on the radio and not hear this song. And while it is a really great song and Phil Collins is an amazing artist, it never really reached me. One of the things that VoicePlay does so well is to try to make their interpretation, both audio and visual, really reflect the lyrics of the song. I think the next time I hear the Phil Collins version I will hear it in a whole new way. They did a great job with the 80s Miami Vice vibe complete with the glitchy VHS feel to it. Layne outdid himself. The percussion was outstanding and I LOVED that stomp sequence. It sets up the whole second half of the song.
Yes they do make their videos true to the lyrics/spirit of the songs, and I often like their covers better than the originals, AND as you said I hear the originals in a whole new way later. Also that signature VoicePlay Joy is so evident here! They are totally giving this song the Full VoicePlay Treatment and they know it and seem to be loving every minute of it!
So seriously, when I saw this the first time.. besides my own reaction of how good it was, my second was... Good gods, someone looked at Layne and said.... Can you do an arrangement that will totally break Mortius and he said, hold my beer. LOL. So when you started this with, I am going to hold the puppy while I watch this.. I was like, my gods, this is not going to work for him!! That said, everyone was awesome, but damn I loved Sassy Cesar we get to hear so much of his versatility in this and the da da Da.. is one of my favorite parts. Great Job, M.
So that breathy puffing sounds he makes that your trying to place are made with light puffs pushed pushed through your lips in more forceful bursts. Almost like when you blow raspberries but a lot let vibrato and more hard puffs of breath that feel more like the energy when you strike a drum... At least that's the best way I can put it having been someone to developed this kind of skill through just doing it randomly rather than professionally with all the terms. XD
Dude, this one was just amazing. Like, I don't know what kind of a kick they've been on over their last three videos, but I swear, they are out for blood, and I LOVE it!
