I agree with you. I think the long lay off after the bad tour kinda hurt his confidence singing live. Plus he probably lost alot of vocal stamina from the long breaks into between tours. He wasnt doing live performances in between tours like Dangerous and History. And I believe as a perfectionist he thought lip lynching and playback gave a better sound. I disagree I love hearing him live like in the bad tour. Such a beautiful voice. I wish he sang live more in the 90s and 2000s
Fun fact: it's not about music, but since you mentioned Ivory Coast and the traditions of African people, in Ivory Coast there is a small kingdom (at the moment I don't remember what it's called - I think it's Sanwi or something like that). And in a trip that Michael made to Africa, he was crowned in that kingdom as a member of royalty by the head of the ethnic group himself, they placed a gold crown on him and signed the official documents, all in the middle of a celebration with music and dances to bless the coronation. Michael had a great connection to the African people.
Fun fact: they had to create different outfits with different sizes in which he would've switched in between the performances because Michael lost between 5 and 10 pounds per show ^^
That is what I’ve always considered as being his prime. Physically first, the vocals.... I mean.... come on. And then chemistry, lovely band. Also I love how this concert is part of the « Bad Tour » but only two songs from « Bad » the album are in it. My favorite show of his. Although every song has a better live version, as a whole, it’s perfect.
Just a small fact. You see the dancers “sing”, but they actually just pretend to be doing so, I believe as to create the Jackson 5 effect. The real backup singer are further away at the stage, so you don’t always see them 😊
exactly, and they are supposed to create a sort of "call and response" effect. In WBSS, MJ would sing "too high to get over", and "his gangs" would respond with "YEAH YEAH". If only the backup singers in the back of the stage do this, the audience can't see it, the effect is gone, that's why MJ required the dancers to mime as well. Similar situations: MJ: "you are my, you are my," his gang: "YOU ARE MY LOVELY ONE", and in Dangerous: MJ: "Dangerous!" his gang: "Dangerous!" You can see in 1993 dangerous tour rehearsal, when they're rehearsing the song dangerous, MJ explicitly told the dancers several times that they have to "mouth" the lyrics there.
@@glenxoseph Yes, I also read in an interview with one of his long time dancers LaVelle Smith, that during one of the rehearsals, I believe, he actually sang aloud and Michael heard him and he was surprised and told him that he actually has a good voice. 😁
In 1987, not only MJ was completely singing live, the band and the backup vocalists are all live. In 1988, there are some pre-recorded instrumental tracks being played, and sometimes the vocalists were singing over the playback. The recording of the backup vocals they did for the album was thick, like there could be 9 or 10 different voices stacked together, but there are only 4 singers live, that's probably why.

And also a fact is that the dancers who are next to Michael are not singing (or maybe they are, but not with the microphone on), they are just dancers. Actually the backup singers are together with the rest of the band and they just sing, which is why their voices are so solid. Michael did this because in the presentations with his brothers, they were by his side doing the background vocals and dancing, but when he started his solo tours there were no dancers with the level of energy that Michael had and who also sang, so there are the backup singers (in other songs of this concert they can be seen better, for example in Rock with you) and also the dancers who accompany him, but they do not sing.

Great reaction Valerie, as always! Michael was at the peak of his performing powers in 1987 (imo), so cool that you're reacting to these videos. Thank you! One thing though, the dancers aren't actually singing, them having microphones and lip syncing to the background vocals is just a part of the show. The actual backups vocalists stands in the back to the right ( you can see them in various moments in this video). They are indeed brilliant though, even though they're not dancing. Their names are Kevin Dorsey, Dorian Holley, Darryl Phinnessee and Sheryl Crow. The dancers names are LaVelle Smith Jr., Dominic Lucero, Evaldo Garcia and Randy Allaire. Brilliant showmen but not singers. Regardless, wonderful reaction!

Trust me valeria, you’ve reacted to little compared to all the legendary performances he’s done and you should react to! For instance, all the songs in Wembley and Bucharest concerts, mtv 1995, wetten dass 1995, dangerous in 2002 at American bandstand, soul train awards 1995 ecc!
@@4evermichael88 just because we like seeing her react. I see you are quite angry ahah. However, as I said, Wembley and Bucharest concerts are full of live performances. Unfortunately we have very little footage of the Bad Tour, which was 125 concerts all live except 3 songs, and Dangerous Tour, which was 70 concerts with the majority of the songs live. So it is not that Michael didn’t perform without lip-sync, we just have little footage. In case you don’t know, the performances I wrote (wetten dass ecc) were almost all dangerous performances, and it was about the dancing, since it was impossible to sing live dangerous dancing, even for Michael Jackson (he did once dangerous completely live but wasn’t amazing).

Again, sorry:) I never commented on neither footage from the 1988 Wembley concerts nor the 1992 Bucharest concert though, I just thought her reactions was about vocals since she is on YT as a vocal coach reactor and thus I didn’t see the point in reacting to lip synced performances. The Dangerous tour had 69 concerts btw, but who’s counting. And there is tons of footage of Michael singing live, all the way back to his Motown audition with his brothers. Btw I’m just curious, when did he do Dangerous live? I know his playback track malfunctioned on at least one show during the HIStory tour but I wasn’t aware that he ever intentionally performed it live? Would have been very interested to know when and where :)
