Wow, I'm so suprised you reacted to Mariza! She's a really famous singer here in Portugal and she's also kinda well known abroad. The style of music she's singing is fado. If I could recomend some other singers I would say Amália Rodrigues. She was the one who gave fado an international status. Another great fado singer is Gisela João. Would really like to see your reaction to these singers!

To sing Fado is to "cry a story", usually a sad story made out of hardship, broken heart, loneliness and the feeling of emptiness by missing someone (in portuguese we have a word for it: "Saudade"). That's what she is doing. That harshness in the voice, that strain is what you get when crying.

i have heard that one. omg it's amazing. As a Portuguese it is clear to me that Fado can not just be heard it needs to be felt too. that's why they are eacting in a more technical way. omg I can't believe it! I've been following your channel recently and I'm Portuguese. I was not expecting this. Marisa is singing fado. It is a Portuguese style and was considered immaterial heritage of humanity. It's something unique. Fado is very emotional, it aims to convey feelings, usually strong and sad. The reason she sings with her mouth like that is because of the language, we don't open our mouths that much Thanks for this reaction. Fado is very beautiful and I'm not saying this because I'm portuguese. Check out more about fado, I know you won't regret it

I don't speak Portuguese and am not familiar with this singing style - Some of the sounds I heard seemed to me to be related to the language. (I'm a native English speaker and I have sung Italian, German and French. There are unique vowel sounds in each language.) Very lovely voice and song.

Yes, I just wanted to say the same! Speakers of European Portuguese just seem to never open their mouths, not even when speaking. I've learnt that the hard way while I was studying in Lisbon and failed completely learning to speak this language, though it is very beautiful! I was surprised to see a reaction video to fado music here on this channel!

That is, perhaps, Linda Schmit, because many Portuguese tend to be a bit taciturn when in the presence of strangers, but also tend to warm up after a little while, once they get to know the person a bit better. This is mostly because contrary to what most people seem to believe, we are not a Mediterranean people, (we don' tend to have the exuberance of, say, an Italian, or a Spaniard, or a Greek -- and this just on the European side of the Mediterranean) but rather an Atlantic one, used to feel a bit isolated in Europe, particularly with so many people either badmouthing us, or mistaking us for Spaniards (thinking that we are a province of Spain and that Portuguese is a dialect of "Spanish", etc.) and completely ignoring the facts of our History as the oldest of nations in Western Europe. PS: I am sorry that you failed to learn the language while you were there studying, but I also know that the Portuguese language can be difficult to get a grasp of, even for many native speakers!

It's cool that you appreciate fado as cultural heritage or you actually like it, but I just gotta say I strongly disagree that fado is the most popular kind of music in Portugal. Maybe you meant iconic, emblematic. I only know a handful of people who actualy enjoy fado style of music and they're mostly old people, except for some uni students because academic tradition introduces young people to Coimbra's fado (which by the way is entirely different from Mariza's music). I'd be shocked if I found any of my 30-year-old peers listening to fado XD lol
@Palmieres
@Palmieres 5 лет назад
The hoarseness is a stylistic choice that relates to the way Fado is sung in Lisbon. It's not supposed to sound completely clear, it's supposed to have some grit to it, because the people who started singing it were not professionals, it was a song of the People, especially the lower classes, sung it in taverns and brothels. It's an early form of blues, you could say, it has to sound like your heart is about to jump out of your mouth, and because they were all live performances the singers had to throw their voice across the room effectively. Watch this video of an acapela performance she did on a Brazilian talk show, singing in a completely different style and mimicking the Brazilian singer Elis Regina, _plus_ using a Brazilian accent, which isn't naturally hers (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HQCAFVmK5mk.html) Skip to 12:00

A free, non-literal English translation: Rain The ordinary things in life Don’t leave a sense of longing Only the memories that hurt Or make us smile There are people who stay with us For they are a part of our story And there are those whose names We can’t even remember There are emotions that give life To this longing of mine Those I had with you And just ended up losing There are days that mark the soul And this life of ours And that day when you left me I cannot forget The rain was soaking my face Frozen and tired The streets of the town On which I had wandered My cry of lost girl Shouted out to the town That the fire of love Had just died in the rain And the rain heard it and kept quiet My secret to the town And then it hit he glass window Bringing back that sense of longing

Mariza is actually one of the most articulate fado singers, you can understand every word correctly, so her face shape is in order to speak the words as clear as possible for our language is perfect. About the singing, that's how Fado singers sound, if you want to hear other 2 singers with a full sound I recommend Ana Moura and Carminho, they will show you what fado singing is like, even more traditionally than Mariza.

I really think that language could also be a reason for the closed-ness, along with stylistic choice. It's easy to pronounce her words this way. It's likely the same way she speaks, whereas some other languages may be harder to get away with singing like that. She opens a bit when she gets louder, though. I don't know, just a guess.

Exacto. O fado obriga a uma certa colocação da voz e de uma fala mais fechada. Quanto ao brasileiro, eu acho que o brasileiro fala mais a "cantar" o que é muito bonito. Nós somos um pouco mais "rijos" na linguagem.

@marycs5199
@marycs5199 5 лет назад
The Portuguese language (from Portugal) is a very hard languag to sing in since almost all the vowels are closed. Portuguese singers usually sing with their mouths very closed so that they can pronounce the words correctly. When you say she opens up its when the word itself has a open vowel. Also the style of music she is singing is linked to sadness and the feeling you get when you miss someone , so people sing it with this very characteristic deep sound you talk about

I honestly just subscribed yesterday and I feel so so so happy to have found this. I'm portuguese so i feel really glad that you reacted to fado, our country's traditional music. I'm not a music expert, not even close to be one and I honestly have no type of knowledge about music or vocals, but fado is about soul and emotion. There is melancholic fado and happier sounding fado, and Chuva (which means Rain) is about nostalgia and melancholia and the feeling of missing someone after the love is gone. The portuguese language is (I might be wrong in what I am saying, so please do correct me) the only language that has a specific word for the feeling of longing or missing someone. That word is "saudade" and this song is about that. The way she sings with the shaking of her voice, the high ups and lows and the way like she sometimes seems as if whispering and others like she's screaming is all because she is converting those melancholic and nostalgic emotions into the crowd. It needs to be a raw sound so she uses a huskier voice. Once again, I have no idea about technique or the way the voice is trained or used while singing but this is just what it feels to me. I believe that usually in sadder fado they tend to use a lot of husky and pulled/strained voices, while in happier fado, its more light sounding and clear. Anyways, thank you so so so much for listening and reacting to fado! I'm really happy you enjoyed and I hope you can listen to some more!! I would like to recomend the spanish song "Perdóname" by Pablo Alborán and Carminho which is a portuguese fado singer. It's kind of like a mix of fado and spanish music and I absolutely love it! Chuva means rain. At the start of the song she introduces her story saying that common things leave no memories and some people you dont remember even if you hear their names, while others make up the story of the History of your life. She then sings about the rain that reminds her of when her lover left her and as she run through the streets the rain wet her face of a "lost girl". Now as she sees the rain hit the window, she is reminded of this. This feeling of a memory of a time that will never come back, the suffering you get in your chest when you recall these past moments, it is described in portuguese as "saudade". It is beautiful.

The teeth closed up type of thing is quite common when you're a Fado singer. Fado is a traditional type of music in Portugal with a very distinct unique way of singing so that's why she's doing it. But definately check out the performance I mentioned earlier...it's really really good and soulful.

Also that "closed" youre talking about gets used alot in fado music, bouncing back and forth between different acoustics of skull throat and torso.....and dont forget those melismas.

Our language has really closed sounds. We do not open our mouth a lot, and even for shouting, we tend to use a lot more force into projecting the sound, instead of creating a wider space in our mouth. Thank you for reacting and discovering our fado! It's actually a specific way of singing, that deviates from classical or "academic" singing. Love your content.

I am a Portuguese teacher from Brazil. I think this "closed place" that puzzled you could just be a characteristic of European Portuguese. If you compare natural speech (not singing), you can more clearly notice that. Compared to Brazilian Portuguese, the European is projected to the back of the mouth, muscles are more strained, mouth is less open, lips are less rounded, it's a stress-timed language, that is, syllables are swallowed, vowels are chopped. Brazilian Portuguese is more projected to the front of the mouth, it is a syllable-timed language, that is, syllables are spoken more clearly, vowels are more open and rounded, muscles are more relaxed. Brazilian Portuguese flows in elegant and sweet waves like Bossa Nova. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TRaRzTt5U1o.html European Portuguese can be deep and strong as Fado. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lh9YHtZzHfk.html

This video is soooo good and interesting!! It's very good to see someone that doesn't speak Portuguese reacting to this, makes you realize how important the language itself is so important in Fado. How she sings and tells a story at the same time, and how that shapes the way she sings. I'm very exited to see more videos from your channel!

If you liked Mariza you should watch this other song from the same concert. She goes way higher and it's a really emotional song that talks about the people of Portugal. Also, Fado is what she sings, it's a type of music that only exists in Portugal and is highly emotional and most times also sad. Please react to this song of hers, it's amazing. Like you said, it's something you don't see very often. In the middle of the video she stops but continues after, don't stop midway ^^ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S2Ip-uUhaoI.html

It's kind of sad that I know nothing about portuguese music, even though I'm brazilian and we speak the same language. It would be cool if you could react to Elis Regina. She's considered one of the best brazilian singers of all time. My favorite song of hers is Como Nossos Pais.

I am really enjoying your videos and your analysis. I'm learning a lot with them, especially as I really like to understand how voice works. I'm Portuguese it was pretty cool seeing a Mariza here in the channel. Can I suggest another one ? Check Salvador Sobral. He won Eurovision song contest in 2017 with "Amar pelos dois" but he has some stuff in English like "change", a new single called "Mano a mano", Spanish songs and covers as well and probably many others. He has a jazzy vibe that comes mostly from his past training. In my opinion he's very versatile with his voice but I'd like to see your analysis.
