She was born of a Nigerian father and Welsh mother. I have a Welsh friend currently dating a Nigerian girl. I'm trying to persuade him to father a new Shirley 🙂
You're right to describe her as biologically impossible. ... Dame Shirley Bassey is unmatched in every way possible...!!! Great review/reaction video...!!! 👍🏼
Shirley is incredible. Her voice has actually changed a lot timbre-wise throughout the years going from a rather girly soprano in her teens and 20s to this dark, massive voice she has now. And she didn’t lose any of the ease or range. From what I’ve seen she only gained more and more. Singers who went through as many vocal changes as her usually experience vocal decline, but not her, she actually got better. Incredible. Thank you for this. She is releasing another album in a few weeks time.
She lost her voice for a couple of years, she needed to learn to sing again...watch her first songs and then the baftas from last year...you hear a different in her voice...
@@peterang6912 I’ve heard her entire catalogue in full many times and have published several videos on her. I’m quite aware of the changes and their reasons. Damage was not one of the reasons.
@@peterang6912 Yes. But there is no relevance to it changing her voice… Her voice darkened due to other factors. The injury she had caused her to fix her vowels.
I was smiling throughout the video. The biggest influence in terms of me wanting to be a belter. Her voice NEVER got weak. Her career has been OUTSTANDING. I wish the people behind James Bond were smart enough to use her for one last song , especially in her 70s when she was vocally on FIRE. You know, she almost lost her voice in the 80s, after the death of her daughter. She got with a coach who taught her how to use better vowels, and introduced her to mixed voice. Outside of that, she has been spent the last few decades exercising her body, and doing grueling vocal exercises to maintain that voice! A testament to hard work and dedication!
It's a "Welsh Thing" Andy....another Welsh legend Sir Tom Jones is also in his 80's and still going strong....singing is a built-in default, and just courses through the veins of the good people of Wales!!
One thing I like about this compilation is it focuses on her later years. There are many iconic performance is not included in this compilation, but I like the fact that it focuses on what she has been doing the last 20 years or so. It shows what a force she was, in fact better than she was prior. Just a fantastic growth as a singer!
Thank you so much for reacting to my video. Shirley is a benchmark by which vocal excellence is judged. She has a new album coming out in November and the single just dropped, a moving ballad called, I Owe It All To You
Can't nobody do it like the Dame! As a Welshman its the best knowing our Shirl is the absolute zenith when it comes to a diva with a voice of such power and technical ability who has kept her voice for the longest of anybody. When the great Aretha cites you as someone she looked up to, it speaks volumes. I defy anyone to find a singer who kept her voice as long... belting that high and powerfully into your 70's is basically a miracle! Great reaction video too mate.
I just love the fact that her voice hasn't almost changed at all in its sound or style. She sounded lighter and brighter when she was young, and she sounds heavy and dark older, but the range, vibrato, support, movements, everything's just the same lol it's impressive
I've said it before and I'll say it again: your reactions are the best; the perfect blend of childlike enthusiasm and expert analysis. What a great lady - the consummate performer. She means a lot to the LGBTQ+ community. I'd also be interested in you reacting to Cleo Laine, Andy.
Thank you. Lovely to hear a professional talk about Dame Shirley. My mum was a big fan and saw her live in Bristol UK 🇬🇧 in the 70s. Shirley Bassey was quite simply a one of a kind. Even made the charts this century with 'propeller heads' history repeating. You should check that out 🙂
Oh yesss... loved your enthusiastic reaction to truly the one and only Dame Shirley... What an icon, What a diva, What a voice! Force of nature, how is it possible to stil be able to sing like that at such a respected high age. it is beyond me. Phenomenal!
I have been to 4 of her Concerts and loved each one. Always delivers. She goes from one song to the next. She doesn't play around with her songs which I love. A true natural professional singing Star artist. Thanks for the video. 👍
I saw 20 concerts in Antwerp over the years, always fantastic. Unique voice and stage presence! There are no more singers like Shirley nowadays. Her career started in 1953!!! Shirley, simply the best.
My God, stil in such good singing condition at 81. Dat speaks volumes abt hr vocal prowess. I particularly like hr cover of " How do u keep d music playing ", its so flushed wth emotions dat makes it so hard nt to b emtionally affected. Classic singer
The girl from Tiger Bay. My favourite is her first ever appearance - that was banned on BBC for containing a 3 letter word they did not like - Burn my Candle (1956).
Hello Andy, First of all I want to thank you soooooo much for your exceptional vocal technique video on the FABULOUS DAME SHIRLEY BASSEY!!! It really warmed my heart to see your musicality and expertise dissect and explain the power and talent behind such an amazing and incredibly gifted singer whose exceptional career has spanned 7 decades!! I love that by being featured on your fantastic channel, the world gets to see why this magnificent Diva is called "The Queen of Song!!!!! Again, thank you so much for featuring the Queen of my heart, Dame Shirley Bassey!!! From a huge fan of your channel, Best Regards, Greg
I have been blessed to see Shirley Bassey twice. Wow what a power performer she is. I have read she is the only singer with vocals that strong that she can perform in a arena without speakers. Her voice has that much strength. I’ve also seen Ms Streisand. She is just incredible. Both a legendary singers. I would say the difference in their styles is Bassey is Cabaret and Streisand is more Broadway.
two good examples of non-belters from bassey are 'time after time' from her tv series and, for me, the very best version of 'the shadow of your smile'.
For my 21st birthday my bf was going to get me tickets to see either Madonna or Dame Shirley in concert. Let’s just say we made the right decision!!!!!!!🙌🏼
Wonderful video!! Reviewing compilations like this is actually a great little Teaser. It makes me want to look up all of those performances in full she did! I hope this compilation bypasses the RU-vid Copyright Algorithm so you can make some money. Dame Shirley Bassett is one of the last great Old Skool vocalists left. Such a diva! I doubt the current crop of Pop Singers will be still belting out hits in their 80s!
I've seen seen so many of your expertly and enthusiastic reactions Andy, such a joy listening to/watching! I've been hoping you'd react to at least one more of Shirley's performances, and you did this compilation reaction, yay! Thank you! A couple of days ago Dame Shirley released the second single off her upcoming new album (at 83!) - she covered Beyoncé's 2012 hit "I Was Here". If you considered reacting to that, it'd be bliss. Thank you much for all your great work and stay well (a 2020 wish lol)
The Living Tree is a fabulous song by a female rock band from the UK called Never The Bride. I love both versions. Theirs is edgy and raw. Shirley's is powerful and moving. You should look for the whole performance. I think it was on the Royal Variety Show.
As it seems like you like DSB If you have not heard yet-she released an album at 83-the last one after 7 decades in business. In my mind, it is one of the most honest and best albums I heard in my life.I own it all to you is its title. Shirley should be remembered as one of the finest performers along with Elvis, Frank...because of the presence, the voice, the acting, and singing ability-she has it all. Bless her-she said she might do a couple of concerts with this album-hope to see her live- that is on my bucket list. This is the link to the full album. Enjoy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JRympvtSKDA.html
Thanks for the video. I absolutely love Dame Shirley's version of "Alone Again Naturally" by Gilbert O'Sullivan. The original is brilliant but Shirley turns it into something else.
There was this Mexican American singer that was considered Bassey's competition back in the day that had some success in America: Vicky Carr that used to.sing with Dean Martin a lot.
I swear Andy I will no stop until you give Daniela Romo with De mi Enamórate a chance! Pleaseeee!! Can't wait to see your reaction!! You're missing out! Please!! 🙏🏼
Greetings friend from Wales 🏴 smallest country in the UK 🇬🇧 the others being England, Scotland and Ireland. We have a population of a mere 3 million thereabouts and Wales is the birthplace of Ms Shirley Bassey and also Sir Tom Jones. Birthplace to actors Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins and Michael Sheene. I live in Swansea, Wales, Richard Burton & A Hopkins were born about 10 miles from where I live and about three miles from where I live actress wife of Michael Douglas (Catherine Zeta Jones) was born and raised. And if you search Swansea USA you’ll find there are 5 Swansea’s, one of which is in the county of Bristol, Massachusetts, so named because some of the earliest settlers there in the 1700’s originated from my hometown, Swansea, Wales!! 🏴🇬🇧🇺🇸
Soy de Argentina y me gustan mucho tus reacciones algunas las has traducido. por favor con subtítulos en español sea para mi buenísimo. Es el único que a reaccionado a Sherly Bassey gracias
@@MasterofVoice Did you ever saw her live in concert ? THAT'S epic ! I saw her 3 times, in London, Hamburg, and the best was in Berlin, with Ray Charles & Liza ! each did a 45 min-Set. Like Gay Heaven 🙃
If my memory serves me and I think it does since the MINUTE I read her name and saw her face again, I could remember as a kid watching the Mike Douglas show on TV and I think she was a guest host for a week when Mike was off, and I fell in love with her then! WOW!
Dame Shirley Bassey did experience voice difficulties following the death of her daughter in 1985. Shirley employed the use of Australian vocal coach Helena Shenel. Please see link : www.google.com/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-4060242/amp/Shirley-Bassey-reveals-s-not-convinced-daughter-s-death-1985-accident-lost-voice-singing-grief.html PS. Dame Shirley did not copy Bob Fosse with her hand movements. They are her own fabulous trademark style.
If you haven’t reacted to it already, I think you’d enjoy her performance of ‘The Greatest Performance of My Life’ on her tv show: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UUzhrvEoCCk.html She also had a new album out on 6th November this year... in her 84th year!!! Amazing
Hello Andy Can you please play and react to the Jennifer Holiday video of her singing " I am Love"live on Johnny Carson show that my husband Greg Reed sent you please!!!
