I love the fact that it’s more intimate because they slowed it down. I like the stripped down jazzy, bluesy, sultry sound of it. I appreciate that even though DeeJay‘s voice could easily be mistaken for Michael Jackson’s, they did not slavishly copy the song. They rearranged it to feature his voice but make it their own. Those delicious harmonies! ❤ I love Geoff’s bassline, Eli’s gorgeous clear tones and the fact that we got to hear Layne sing with Cesar (One of my favorite parts. ) DeeJay gets a couple of chances to riff for a while. It reminds me of the Motown sounds that I grew up with. This is definitely going to be one of my favorites. Deejay also did Man in the Mirror with them. That was J None’s last song with them before he was recruited by the Navy. His slot was filled by Cesar, but comes back often to sing with them. VoicePlay has been performing since the mid 90s, professionally since about 1997. The original members of the group in this lineup are at the two ends. They’ve been a five member group but they’re short one permanent member and fill that slot with a variety of guest artists most of whom they’ve worked with before. From left to right, Layne Stein (original member when he was baritone, and switched to beatboxing), Eli Jacobsen (pronounced El Lee, tenor rock god, since 2010), guest artist DeeJay Young, Cesar de la Rosa, (baritone tenor, youngest member and newest to the group in 2021) , and Geoff Castellucci (original member, bass with a five octave range, pronounced Jeff Cast-ah-loo-chee.)
