When he said “wait the beatboxer sings?” it kinda hit me… We are so used to see people talking about Geoff’s bass/range, Eli’s runs and J’s tone/phrases, but we almost never see someone saying the obvious. Layne Stein is a freaking machine, man! This dude can beatbox while playing the violin (Warriors), can sing (here, Can’t Help Falling in Love), can do character voices (Kidnap Mr Sandy Claws, The Little Mermaid Medley) AND HAVE SOME BARS TOO (Moana Medley)! Awesome reaction!
The beatboxer, Layne, used to be their baritone yeats ago but when their beatboxer left, Layne took over. J None was the man you didn’t tecognize. He recently joined the Navy chorus. J None is a baritone/tenor. He is in a lot of VoicePlay favorites, always with the incredible runs up and down the scale. Try Your My Best Friend. Thanks for your reaction
Hi Chris Voiceplay is five guys when at full strength. At one time, they also had a female lead singer in addition to the five, but that's long ago. JNone joined them in 2017, filling a vacancy they'd had for over a year. So their lineup from 2017 to mid-2020, which is what you'll see in most of their vids, is: Earl Elkins Jr. - High Tenor Eliezer (Eli, pronounced like "Ellie") Jacobson - Tenor 2 Jesse Nunn III, professional name JNone - Tenor/Baritone Geoff Castellucci - Bass Layne Stein - Vocal Percussion, occasional singing, violin, arrangements Earl left in 2020. Between that and COVID restrictions, the group's output dropped off and Geoff started to release multitrack solo vids on his own YT channel. JNone left and went into the Navy in 2021. They recently added Cesar De La Rosa as a permanent member. He's listed as a Tenor/Baritone, so apparently he's filling JNone's spot and they're still searching for a high tenor. You can think of all the vids they've done with various guest artists since Earl left (maybe even the ones with female guests) as not just variety funsie stuff but also auditions of a sort. See who fits in, blends well, gets good reaction from their fans. Omar Cardona has been in a few of their vids, but he's just a guest. His brother EJ Cardona, from Voctave, was a guest on Voiceplay's cover of Go The Distance.
I would LOVE for Omar to join the group!! Absolutely love him!! He’s on this season of The Voice, John Legend’s team. I hope he’s doing well! I haven’t checked the past week! ❤
@@robertboling9057, as a bass singer and composer, I have to slightly disagree. Tim has some great basslines, and would never take away from them. However, when it comes to guitar or bass guitar-type basslines, I find Geoff has a tighter tone, better timbre, and a better ability to switch from them to lyrical lines. Plus, he is able to flow between his 5 octaves cleaner. Yes, they have identical ranges; Geoff just transitions from bass to tenor lines flawlessly.
J None (ex-member now in the US Navy) is the man in the hat and was the group's baritone. He came back on leave and recorded Friends on the Other SIde with VP and it's GREAT.
Love your reactions. Layne, the beatbox, has a gorgeous baritone. He mostly sings in the beginnings or ends of songs... you could listen to their cover of True Colors (arranged by Layne), to hear his voice (True Colors is one of my favorites). Yes it's probably true that they're bringing in people because they're currently at 4 permanent members. BUT - when they're at full five they still sometimes bring someone in and make it a 6th. In the Wicked Medley, they brought back TWO featured performers to make it six again. In March they did a stunning cover of Eleanor Rigby (arranged by Eli) with only four. My guess is that they follow the needs of their vision for each song. They tend to take a very long time to decide on replacements, so......... you'll see a lot of featured singers.
The black young man is J.None he joined the Navy this past June and is no longer in the group. He did come back on his first leave and do a couple of videos with them.
If you listen to friends on the other side, J None has the absolute sickest run I’ve ever heard. I rewound and listened to the run about 12 times. Incredible
So glad you are liking VoicePlay. Honestly I haven't found anything of theirs that I didn't love. They just dropped their newest one a medley from the Broadway show Wicked on Thanksgiving and it is incredible.
Yes, you're right about them looking for a new fifth member. The guy who did the smooth baritone runs is J.None - he recently left to serve in the Navy, which took them down to three until Cesar joined them permanently just recently (he's the tenor with the gammy eye in the 'Hoist The Colours' video.) If you react to 'Queen In Five Minutes' (another knockout arrangement, with their trademark theatrics to boot,) you'll see their earlier high tenor Earl, who has a beautiful crisp, clear voice that always throws people off-guard the first time, because he just doesn't look like he should be able to sing like that!
If you'd like to hear more of Layne's singing - as opposed to his percussion talents - check out "True Colors" or "Can't Help Falling in Love". Actually, check those out regardless, they're beautiful. :)
So excited for your Voiceplay journey! I started quite a few years ago as a huge Pentatonix fan then I discovered Home Free while searching for Man of Constant Sorrow and became a huge fan of them. Then in 2019 I discovered Voiceplay while searching RU-vid for The Oogie Boogie Song and now they are absolutely my favorite of the three a cappella groups. I just really enjoy the theatrical approach that they have. I would love to see you react to their Little Mermaid medley, their Moana medley, If I Were a Rich Man/Girl and their brand new Wicked Medley!! Omg amazingnessss! Not to mention all of their nightmare before Christmas covers!
So their Wicked medley just dropped. It is... You just have to listen to it. Like, has to be your next reaction before anything. It's a Geoff arrangement and they are unreal. Adding in stuff already. Lol. J. None is the one you were asking about. Former member and we miss him. Friends on the Other Side is a great showcase for him. As for Geoff's solo stuff, House of the Rising Sun is a must.
Yes layne the beatboxer can sing. He sings in my mother told me and has an amazing voice. Scott porter was the original beat boxer and layne sang baritone when Scott left layne took over beat boxing. Layne also sings in little mermaid medley very much a character part though. He also sings in hoist the colours. He is very talented as is also an amazing violinist and demonstrates that in warriors. The one you liked the voice is j none, he left this year to join the navy but came back for friends on the other side.
Listening to Geoff's ending of phrases always has me on the end of my seat. For this song, I knew he was going to go low, since high wouldn't fit. For some songs, though, you just never know if he is going to go high, low, or even if it's going to end in the harmony as an inverted 5th, 3rd, or 7th of the chord.
As I read this comment, the musical section of my heart intensified and then grew so warm as I read the last sentence haha. I love finding viewers that understand music! 😅
@@creativecrewfam, I really appreciate the kind words. It's funny, I am actually a rap lyricist but I have a triple major undergrad; psychology, social work, and music... going on to earn a double graduate degree in psychology and music. I used my education to work in advertising for a major record label. VoicePlay and their arrangements are a challenge for even me to breakdown, at times, though... phew, Geoff and Layne are musical geniuses, in my opinion.
Oh so glad you got a good pair of headphones! It's much easier to appreciate the warmth of Geoff's voice with a good set. :D I highly recommend their Oogie Boogie cover. Geoff really shines and hits some amazing notes!
Eli is a beast. I can't listen to the original now without being disappointed it isn't Eli singing lead and Geoff's bass drops. Yes Layne sings beautifully.
I've been working my way through all of your videos (one artist at a time) and thought you should know. Omar Cardona (in the middle) is the brother of EJ Cardona from Voctave. When I learned that, my mind was blown.
They just released The Dragonborn Comes which has Omar in it. It's sooooo incredibly epic! Eli has some amazing E5s and Geoff has some jawdropping arpeggios over 2 octave spread and also a C#1 in there. CHECK IT OUT!!
Welcome to the VoicePlay rabbit hole. You should also check out their Halo song. It's has Geoff's lowest note. Everyone is just amazing in that song. It's also a tribute to a friend.
Voiceplay's Oggie Boogie! It's kinda Christmasy... and mind blowing Also their version of 'If I were a rich man' is spectacular!! ALSO also... Lane steps into base and plays the violin. The man is beyond talented! All of them are incredible! ♡♡♡
Loving the Channel Chris! My tip is for the newest of Voiceplay, the Wicked Medley and if you keep doing Voiceplay, Home Free and Pentatonix vids, i will keep watching my man!
Lots of collaboration videos with VoicePlay. If you want to get to know some of the featured guests, watch their quarantine fundraiser video with the captions turned on. It's Just Sing from Trolls. Also many of the past members of VoicePlay are in the video. When their tenor recently left they had Rob Lundquist of Home Free fill in on the ACA top 10 movie themes.
In one of Tara's vids, she talks about him and calls him Jesse, then catches herself and says something like "Oops, now I'm in trouble" (because he always wants to be referred to by his professional name).
Loving your reactions! Gotta say, I cannot wait for you to really appreciate their stuff and for you to discover the solo work of Geoff Castellucci as well… with your love for theatre it’s going to be one hell of a ride my friend.
If you liked this, you should definitely check out their version of Bridge Over Troubled Water, Queen in 5 mins, Boy Bands in 4 mins, Panic at the Disco in 4 mins (pt 1 & 2) and I promise you will NOT be disappointed. Also, pretty much ANYTHING they do featuring Rachel Potter is gold. A lot of Disney, but they also do musicals (Phantom of the Opera is especially good) and contemporary music with her like their cover of Attention & Chandelier. I will keep coming back to check out your reactions! Thanks for doing this one.
Home free tends to bring in feature singers when a given song would benefit from it. Some of those have done a number of songs with them. They actually have added Ceasar who took J.None's place for now.
Please do a reaction to Voice Plays version of The Dragonborn Come. Geoff's low bass is off the charts. Elie's high note are off the charts. Their best yet.
im looking forward to you watching voiceplay's oogie boogie - it features Geoff (the bass) it is incredible to say the least. intricate, entertaining, and beautiful
If you want to hear more of Geoff (the bass) he also has his own channel. Also yes Layne ( Beatboxer) can sing, this is more clearly shown in their video of "My Mother Told Me"
If you like Geoff's base in this and Hoist the Colors, you should check out some of the stuff he's posted on his solo channel. His Misty Mountains cover will blow your socks off.
The beatboxed (Layne) did sing a little in Hoist the Colours. He also has a great little segment (more character voice than legit, but he’s wonderful) in Little Mermaid Medley. I second the recommendation that you check out the Wicked Medley. It’ll be fun watching your jaw drop. Great reaction!
Can the beatboxer sing... Funny you should ask that after your reaction to Layne's harmony on the second low 'Yo-Ho" in Hoist the Colors. Hoist the colors has the current lineup. J-none (to Omar's left) left for Military Service, and Cesar joined. As you fall down the rabbit hole, you will find a big guy with a beard and a stellar high tenor. That would be Earl who left a while ago.
"Can the beatboxer sing?" Sir, I direct you to either (or both) of their medely's, the Little Mermaid or Moana... They you tell ME if the beatboxer can sing. You truly have just scratched the surface of VoicePlay... *Hey gang, wait until he discovers that the Geoff (bass) has his own creative channel where he mixes singing with himself in 4 part harmony.... but that's for later, after he explores Voiceplay.
The bass singer for VoicePlay Has a solo channel Geoff Castellucci i’d recommend checking out some of his Solo work you would be amazed at the range he is capable of
Just found your channel and now subbed. I like your visual reactions to each part of a song. Please, for the love of theatrics, react to "Oogie Boogie's Song". It is makeup, costumes, blocking, tied up Santa, oh and Geoff (bass) is Oogie Boogie. Now that you have your AirPod Pros, you have to break them in properly. This will do it. Thanks for putting up fun reaction content!
Thanks for watching and subscribing! I’m SUPER excited to react to videos since I have the AirPod Pros. Tomorrow’s recording session will be the first videos with them to be exact!
As a Supernatural super fan, I'm very particular about this song. I really don't like when anyone messes with it. Voice Play is a phenomenal group I just couldn't get behind this.
