I admit: I'm not a singer. I don't do audio editing or mixing. I saw the screen at the beginning of this and quickly scanned the preview bar to see if there was ever going to be anything interesting. Here I am, an hour and 5 minutes later hoping we get to do it again. Watching two people who are so passionate about their craft geek out together made it worth watching. That wasn't an interview. That was a Master Class. Great video! Thanks so much to Layne for doing this.

@@TheCharismaticVoice You speak of things like minor to major pitch shifts, harmonic arrangements and such in your reaction videos and you're worried about "geeking out" now? I like to sing, I can play a few instruments and play about with mod trackers but I have no knowledge of things like reading music, but your videos still keep me interested because I am learning more and more about what makes a song sound good to others.

@@TheCharismaticVoiceElizabeth - absolutely not. I may not have the technical knowledge to understand everything that was discussed, but you and Layne did a really great job of explaining and/or providing examples to illustrate what you were talking about. So even if I didn’t fully understand it, I could get the contextual clues to help me. It’s absolutely obvious that both of you are passionate about what you do and this video is an absolute extension of understanding how and why other musicians make the choices they do. I know that lots of people are drawn to reactions, and watch all of them religiously. I don’t watch every reaction, but I do watch many and I will always watch this kind of video, even if the artist in question is not a favorite. I know that I will learn more about them and will likely appreciate them more, even if I’m still not a mega fan. And who knows, I just might…

@@TheCharismaticVoice They all use Cardioid Condenser Studio mics... did you think to ask why not ribbons? don't ribbons capture the most realistic sound for instruments and voice? And the newer ribbons are no longer as super expensive as they once use to be. p.s. i use to work for a PBS production house/station and we got Pro-Tools when it first came out. I have noticed one thing I don't like about modern production. The way the audio is recorded on a separate device than the video and that sometimes it just doesn't mesh up in post. I am being VEERY picky here realizing that tv is only 29.99999999 frames a second but sometimes I can see that the mouth is off 1/60 or 1/90 of a second.

I really enjoyed hearing the parts separated out in various sections of the song; I’m not a production musician by any means but it’s fascinating hear the parts by themselves and then hear them layered one by one. This helps me in particular hear things in the music that I may have otherwise missed or appreciate technical aspects of the work that goes into mixing and finalizing a project. One of the things I enjoy the most about watching this channel and a select few other reaction channels like it is how Elizabeth points out these inflections and musical skills on the part of the artist that I might have otherwise missed. This gives me a greater understanding of what I am hearing and just how much work and talent goes into what an artist produces. Obviously we know it’s work, but I don’t think people who aren’t production musicians or who aren’t musicians at all really grasp the next level precision that makes these produywhat they are. Basically, thank you Elizabeth, and today Lane, for guiding my long-sleeping inner music geek.

Something I thought of that you might enjoy knowing is that both Geoff and Layne have arranged for Home Free as well. Geoff did their cover of Elvira featuring The Oak Ridge Boys Layne was called on to arrange Home Free's Butts Remix. The two groups are friends and you will occasionally catch a credit or quick cross over appearance. I love both bands, and these were surely two great arrangements done, especially The Butts Remix. Chris Rupp of Home Free recently did his own "reaction" to that explaining a lot of the back story of the making of and share how he brought Layne in as a master of medleys.

Geoff will beatbox, Eli will be on the base and Layne will sing in falsetto the whole time :D that would be so cool and such a treat to the fans who all know they can do it but wonder what they sound like doing it! BEST. VIDEO. EVAR!!! Thanks so much for this Elizabeth! Just absolutely incredible content that no one else is even thinking of doing. When it first started I was thinking of an interview that Ed Boyer did about his work with PTX and then his name actually came up! The nerd in me bows down to the nerd in you.

This was so awesome! The breakdown of each part was really neat and these guys really know how to put stuff together! I would love to see another interview like this with Geoff and get his take on arrangements and the other guys too on their videos. So fun! Thank you and layne for doing this!! ❤️❤️🤘🤘

I understand nothing technical about music but I still really enjoyed this interview. I love VoicePlay and Layne's love of music and how much he enjoys working with the the other guys just shines through all throughout this. Thank you & Layne so much for taking the time to do this.

This is AMAZING stuff! The mutual appreciation and respect is so strong at times that I get tears in my eyes. I don't understand half of the technical stuff (never had anything to do with recording or mixing music), but I still love this discussion. THANK YOU Elizabeth and Layne for this rare insight into the world of recording a cappella music. Love from Finland

It's really nice to get a look into the creative process like this. These things always take so much more work than I ever imagine, and I love that these guys put so much work in to deliver us such great entertainment.

Great video, would love to see more of these also with other artists. as others said before it's refreshing to really dive into technical details with the artists themselves.

I guess this is why their videos are so perfect, because they know what they want and can bring it, without having to rely on others who may not have their vision for it. Makes perfect sense.

what a cool interview, I learned so much! I am more of a classical musician (not professionally though, just as a hobby) but I love listening to acapella groups and this insight into the process and how much effort goes into it was really amazing! Also both of you have such a calm demeanor, it was an absolute joy to watch you geek out about music together :D

Elizabeth, I love your analyses, I've learned so much from you! As a non-musician I'm often left going "WAIT, what just happened!" And I can come to your channel and find out..... you explain all of the stuff that my poor ears just don't know what to do with. Loving VoicePlay, I thought this interview would be a natural. For me, it was rewarding but dense. No problem. I broke it into 2 parts and listened on 2 different days, and that allowed my poor brain to (somewhat) keep up with your conversation. What a delight it was! Having a place to come and listen and learn is so amazing - I'm forever grateful! So - even for us non-musicians who are just deeply curious enthusiasts, this was absolutely perfect. A gift. Thank you, and a big thanks to Layne, too. Loved hearing some of his beatboxing tracks separately, to help me understand. I'm 70, and somehow beatboxing slipped in when I wasn't paying attention; coming into it cold has been mind-blowing. I've passed this interview along to friends who, like me, are astonished and delighted to learn about this corner of the musical world.

Thank you so much, really interesting to have the process broken down, and the effort to make it sound"organic" as a "real" simultaneous performance.
