There are a couple of other groups worth looking at: Voctave: VoicePlay makes me laugh, Voctave (usually Katie Lott) brings me tears. The Disney Princess Medley is their best in my opinion. Bass Gang: The Emperor's New Clothes is amazing, and is as good as most anything from VoicePlay (except maybe Oogie Boogie and Host The Colors).

The lyrics are an English translation of a poem from an 11th century Icelandic saga, Egils Saga. It literally IS a real viking song in a way.

Enjoyable as always. You pick up on so many things that most of us miss. You do much more than just making me smile ( and sometimes laugh) at your facial expressions! Because of your expectations I appreciate music at a deeper level now. That's a gift! I don't know where I heard this, or if I even really heard this but I understand that Geoff heard you practicing his low notes and now will issue a sing-off challenge with you. As a huge Voiceplay fan, this week of Voiceplay has been spectacular. Ive enjoyed this week of videos so much. I have to put a vote in for a week of Geoff Castellucci videos at some point and if that comes to fruition, I hope that Bear Necessities and Shenandoah are part of that group.

I can only hope that J None will work with them again someday. I miss his energy. (But I love Cesar's voice aswell. I like the many different versions of this song. This was excellent but I also like The Hound and The Fox with Adam Chance rendition too. It's quite different with a female voice added to the mix.

You can find some versions in Old Norse that also really hits different. The lyrics are actually taken from a poem (kind of like Auld Lang Syne) from the 1200s.

Amazing reaction and analysis Jennifer! I watched it during the live stream but I'm coming back afterwards to listen again to do my own analysis and reaction. 😉 Yes we're all going to be sad that Voiceplay week is over but we all know Jennifer isn't going anywhere. 😊 My goodness this is such a simple song a "round" type song but these guys do so much with it don't they? Makes you wonder what they could do with Row Row Row Your Boat! 😅 I wish you could have been involved with this one too ... just to see your face painted all fierce like that. 😁The chord arrangements! Every time they sing a round they do something a little different ... a hit of dissonance, or a diminished chord. It keeps you guessing! Thank you so much Jennifer for taking the time to put together these weeks for us! 😊

Whatever you do next will be fun I'm sure! Next time you do a VoicePlay week, you should consider the Moana and Little Mermaid Medleys. Rachael Potter is in both of those, she is awesome. My youngest grandson, who is 2, requests hearing this song every time I see him and he will watch it over and over and over (drives his parents nuts, but makes me very happy!). He told me he is Geoff, his dad is Layne (my son played drums in school) and I get to be Eli!!! Yay! Thanks for the reaction, loved it!!

With Geoff's foghorn, I cannot quite place what is going on, but it sounds like either a mix of the F1 subharmonic with F2, a mix of F1, F2, and D2, or just F1 and D2 to make a root/5th chord.

"WHAT IS BETTER - TO BE BORN GOOG OR TO OVERCOME YOUR EVIL NATURE THROUGH GREAT EFFORT" FACT ABOUT THIS SONG it's actually a poem that originated from a young boy that killed his first person. He was in such shock about what he's done and his mother was very proud of him. So the song explains that since he killed a man (hue many foe-men), he'd grow up as a warrior within the shieldwall with his brothers and sisters in arms. He'd saild to distant shores on his galley, which is a type of boat/ship used at that time.

I think the thing that I really can't stand about this song, is that they've got the Vikings, of all people, speaking in caveman talk. Which is absurd. They spoke flipping Old Norse; it's a fusional language, with grammar in the same general category as Greek and Latin. This is of course not VoicePlay's fault. They didn't write the bloody thing.

Fun fact about this song. Before that, like many people, I assume, I kind of scoffed when I first heard the lyrics. I mean, they basically say, 'mommy says I'll buy a big boat someday!'. Well, firstly that's because the English version of the song comes from a really crappy translation of the Norse skald. (a skald is a peom/song that tells an epic story. The people of Norway passed down their history this way in das old'n times) Secondly, the story behind the song is kind of dark. Basically the singer, who is 10 years old, killed another boy who pissed him off. Several adults saw him do it and went to subdue him only for him to kill several full grown men before finally being taken down and restrained. The kid's father was horrified that his son was a psycho but his *mother* was super proud of him, telling him that instead of punishing him, the village should buy him a viking ship and send him out to show them what real men were made of.

I have a vision of you collaborating with Voiceplay as "Gen" all made up and rumbling an F1 while Geoff is freed up to sing the higher parts. 🙂 I vote for a Geoff week: High and Dry Blackbird Saddle Up Shenendoah Or have you listened to Malinda or Rachel Hardy? I just love Eli’s work here. He’s quite a good actor-this Viking and his Pirates character could be pretty similar, but here, he really does come across like a guy who would come at you if you got in his way, and his Pirates character is one of those jolly Disney villains who’s having a good time being bad. And yeah, I love how smooth and sweet his voice can be when he’s doing something like the Mermaid medley, and then there’s this hard edge here. Always a joy to hear Layne sing, and only he would bring this kind of rhythm to such a traditional historical song (he did the same with If I Were a Rich Man/Girl). I hope they bring back Jose-I don’t feel like he’s gotten a proper feature yet, and I love his voice! And yeah, that F1. Geoff can just hang out there all day. LOL. Great reaction, Jen!! I wish I could afford to Patreon (I’d be throwing money at a lot of folks), but I’m still getting out from under some heavy vet bills-and guess what, it’s time for another appointment! Anyway, if you’re taking any requests from non-Patreons, you know I want you to check out some of Peter Barber’s work (and/or Tomi or Marwan-they’re all turning in some brilliant solo work apart from The Bass Gang).

This isn't Jose's only foray into acapella. Since 2019, he's been a member of one of the OG professional acapella groups, Rockapella. You might want to check them out. Their cover of the old 3 Dog Night tune Shambala is a good one, as well as their classic Zombie Jamboree.

This is kind of off base to your video, but there was a band in the '80s called Steelheart and they're famous for a song called "I'll never let you go" the front man is phenomenal, a must see,love to see your reaction on it thank you.
