It is no secret that Thurl Ravenscroft, the bass legend, is one of Geoff's big inspirations as a bass singer. He has spent many an hour emulating Thurl's tone and technique, to find that unique sound that works so well as both a spooky storyteller and a villain.
I thought it could be fun to set the two bass legends side by side, singing the same song, to see the differences and similarities between them.

My insomniac brain strikes again, with errors in the video. 🤦‍♀️ This was ofc filmed at Geoff's parents house, and not his own. Also, the slide at the end of Thurl's version goes back up to an F2, not an F3. I really should stop making videos when I can't sleep 😅

Geoff’s voice is much rounder and richer. It’s the difference between cheap chocolate and expensive chocolate. They’re both delicious, but the expensive chocolate is more complex and nuanced.

Wow! Just wow! I've always loved Thurl Ravenscroft's beautifully deep voice, but Geoff sure gives him a run for his money! I really enjoy hearing Geoff doing these songs!

Super Huldra, il est intéressant d'écouter l'original, puis le travail de Geoff...En restant tout à fait objective, pour d'ailleurs beaucoup d'interprétation de Geoff, sa voix est supérieure par son harmonie, sa profondeur aussi, elle a une beauté que je ne trouve chez nul autre. Fun! I didn't know Thurl ever sang backup for Bing. Minor quibble: Geoff wrote in the description that he filmed at his folks' house, in their dining room. He also expressed shock that they had these props lying around. I always read his descriptions... often they're as entertaining as the video. Almost.

Very interesting! I wonder how a remastered Thurl's version would sound next to Geoff's. Also, I would love to be able to hit that F1 at the end, but since I'm female it's probably physically impossible for me. 😅

Geoff improves all the songs he arranges. It was in his performance that I discovered the old Simon and Garfunkel song "The Sound of Silence" and now it has become my favorite song. And the song "Blackbird" immeasurably surpasses the performance of its creators, the Beatls.

While I've heard Mr. Ravenscroft as Tony the Tiger, and his version of "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch", I don't think I've ever heard his Headless Horseman before. Both from Geoff's interview with Peter Barber and his frequent usage of that specific method of darkening his tone, it's pretty obvious that Geoff really appreciates Mr. Ravenscroft's sound - I'd love to hear Geoff do a Tony the Tiger imitation! Thanks for the video comparison!

Geoff claims he's not able to Tony the Tiger justice, he says he struggles with the huge pitch slide like that. Now whether that's true or just Geoff being his normal humble self or never really putting the work in to get it right, I dunno. But that's what he says himself at least.

You can definitely hear the influence. Geoff also, of course benefits from better equipment that records more of his voice. (Still like his voice better though)

I grew up with Thurl's original and Bing's popular one. Now with Geoff's version I can selectball three, depending on my mood.

They are both great! There's a vibe in Thurl's that not even Geoff can equal, but comes very close. Still, I'm bias to Geoff; plus I like the video, the added lyrics and the lower F1 ending 😍 Thanks so much, Huldra!

Geoff does a near perfect match to Thurl’s version. And I like the slightly slower,more drawling way Geoff sings it. More eerie in my opinion.

Two bass legends singing a classic song. Geoff puts a bit more jazz into it imo. I've done my own version of this song on my channel based off Geoffs version, but I only wish I could make it sound as good as Geoff does 😅. Thanks for this contrast huldra.

lol, his voice can be a bit overwhelming for people who aren't used to bass voices. Blackbird might be a better option, as he doesn't start out super bassy there and eases you more into it. but some people just don't like bass voices, they might connect a deep voice with something to be afraid of, and those people often never like hearing bass singers.
