Never expected, but always appreciated.❤Links in Description!* What an amazing rendition of an incredible song! I had no idea that Chris Stapleton covered this song, originally written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove and sung by David Allan Coe! Mind blown!
Partwork. Yes, it was a series. I believe their Patreon members selected the songs and decided who should sing it - then they did it. There are several where there are only two members singing, so each covers multiple parts. It was a really fun series, and I believe it's a separate list on their channel.
J None, the black guy with the smooth R&B voice is a member here, but 3 yrs ago he was recruited into the US Navy chorus. He has another 2 yrs to go and he's been promoted from Seattle to Washington DC which is much easier for him to catch a flight to Orlando. We've been lucky to have him more often. I love that bar and the classy guys singing in there.
His voice is incredible! Glad he can still pop in from time to time and sing with the crew! Thanks for the information and you’re right, the setting for this video is super rad!
Eli's (Ellee) voice is so beautiful in this. Then you hear him being a maniacal, terrifying, gritty rock tenor in their other songs. None of these guys has a lane!
The second soloist was J None - he was a member for a few years, but was recruited to sing for the Navy in 2021. Since then he joins them when he's on leave, and we're always thrilled to have him back. While he sang baritone with VoicePlay and hit some pretty high notes in this (and other) songs - he's singing bass in the Navy. Quite a range.
Someone else shared that he joined the Navy and I think that is so admirable especially after already having a music career! Thanks for the info and stopping by! Incredible singers and this performance was absolutely killer! 😄
This was the first thing I saw of theirs, after hearing Chris Stapleton's. It blew me away and I've seen everything they've done since, and they never disappoint. Voicepoint doe everything except the final mix. I often think they could be describing themselves in this song.
Thanks for your reaction! Yes, I love the way they do this cover. Voice Play is different from Home Free and Pentatonix as they are completely independent and have no record label/contract by choice so the have complete control of their production, creative expression and balance of family life vs demands of touring. They do all their own production (arrangements, editing, costumes, etc) in their own homes and studio, PattyCake Productions, owned by beatboxer, Layne, and former baritone singer, Tony Wakim. They are from Orlando Florida and all of the members have worked as performers for Universal and/or Disney theme parks. Yes, they are very versatile and all have incredible ranges and skills. The member you did not recognize was J None and he was in the "Queen In 5 Minutes" reaction that you did but not in "We Don't Talk About Bruno". J None was a full time member of Voice Play but left to join the Navy shortly after the pandemic ended. J None is active duty military singing bass (yes bass!) for the Navy but is so talented in writing, arranging, beatboxing and rapping as well as his voice range. J None comes back to sing with Voice Play frequently now when he is on military leave so we still think of him as extended Voice Play family and part time member and his position since he left has not been permanently filled- Voice Play has him and others as frequently featured guests fill in. J None does have his own solo channel you may want to check out as well as the PattyCake Production channel.
Thanks for all the info! That’s awesome the J None actually went to serve the country by joining the military after already having a successful career! The whole group is incredible and I love that they have their own production company! I always enjoy their videos and can’t wait to hear more from them!
You definitely understand a cappella more than you realized. Your explanation of how the chords are created by scale intervals being sang was perfect. It is definitely the basis for a cappella and how they achieve that sound. To move it around, though, often times, you will have a low baritone or bassline that moves chromatically between those chord intervals to achieve tension, hint at resolution, or to move to the next chord. Geoff is a master at doing this.
Thanks for the kind words and the explanation on chord movement! That is so cool and unbelievable how they do that flawlessly! Appreciate the info and feedback! Have a great one! 😁
I really love the more R&B feel they gave this, as well as the short doo-wop part! One thing that is hard to believe is that Geoff was apparently originally reluctant to do that run. Said something about Bass singers not really being good at that sort of thing. According to an interview by J, Layne pretty much said, too bad, you're doing it anyway, so get to learning it. And nowadays, he even arranges songs with runs in them for himself that go much faster than this one. Layne really loves to push Geoff! Most of the real low notes you hear Geoff do are in a Layne arrangement. And some of the wildest beatboxing for Layne comes in songs Geoff has arranged.
Haha 🤣 That is hard to believe! Maybe him stepping out of his shell a bit allowed him to stretch out vocally for other stuff! Definitely has an R&B vibe which I love! Thanks for watching!
The Partwork series is just wonderful, some songs are just two members doing all the parts, all or any combination . Stunning work. great reaction. There is a video of a live performance of this floating around YT as well filmed by a fan at The Valley Forge Casino but still pretty good....
Great reaction. They are indeed incredibly versatile. Some pieces I like more than others, usually due to the song choice. You have seen J before. He was in Queen in 5 minutes. He was in the gold jacket and started the whole piece by pulling Earls heart out of his chest😂. He has a wonderful soulful voice. But he is versatile as well. Even going so far as to doing some rap in some of their pieces. The mixing is done by Ed Boyer who does the mixing for the major a cappella groups. I know he has arranged for Home Free and I believe Pentatonix as well. He is truly a master. One of my favorite of their part work series is their cover of Death of a Bachelor. It’s in four part harmony plus beatboxing and it’s done by two of the members: the low bass singer and the super high tenor. It is one of my favorites and it’s so overlooked.
Now that you mention it, I do remember him! 🤦🏻♂️ (I check out alot of music so hard to keep it all straight). The mix is incredible so I have to check out more work by Ed Boyer and some possible mixing strategies he uses! Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!
As PurpleButterfly has said before, Mr. Stapleton version is not the original. David Allan Coe recorded it first time. All three versions are enjoyable, but they are different styles. Dig this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_t4tUeqjcjI.htmlsi=reSFObNCZ6NR5tko
