I thought it was interesting that Layne did no beat boxing until after Geoff's solo--half way through the song. He was doing lyrics, which is not the norm. Geoff was doing his walking bass for the percussion.
I was a teenager when MJ released this and I enjoyedit. I have to say that I thought VP blew it out of the water. I like it so much more than the original.
Yes, Man in the Mirror was recorded the last day J None was with them, Deejay was with them for that one. Geoff's arrangement of this one is so intricate and downright sexy. Can you imagine trying to figure out what to do after that absolutely manic Classical Chaos? I think the decision to slow down and calm down after that was very deliberate on Geoff's part. I'm very old so not invested in seeing MJs moves or anything else specific, so I absolutely love it!
I actually prefer their cover. That jazzier slow groove is very intimate and sexy instead of MJs flashier take. I never really appreciated the original mostly because of that video felt almost threatening with following the girl in the street. This feels more like an emotional connection rather than plain lust. I get what you mean about ‘lounge’. I really want to slow dance to this. Not exactly MJs style. Really hope your finals went well!
Yes, you are correct, it was both J None and Deejay in Man in the Mirror. This is such a beautiful cover and Deejay is perfect in it! I love that it’s a little bit subdued, it’s quite perfect in my ears. I’m so glad that you found the time to react to it, I enjoyed your reaction as always!
Deejay was there for Man in the Mirror, J None's last video before heading out to the US Navy. Deejay has been in In My Room, Christmas Don't Be Late, Butter, Bang!, You're My Best Friend. It was quieter than expected, but it delivered the flavor of the MJ version. Loved it when Layne brought in the percussion. I would have wanted it to come in earlier. I'm used to VP being quiet at the start - think Nothing Else Matters, In The Air Tonight, Creep - before bringing in the big guns. I have listened to this a number of times and thoroughly enjoy this as it stands too.
I love every bit of it. As always Voiceplay made this their own. Kept respect for the original but made this their own. They once said that if they can't change a song in some way while keeping the respect they refuse to do the song. Geoff did an amazing job with this. DeeJay Young is the perfect person to do MJ. Yes. Man In The Mirror with J None was the other MJ song they did. It was J None's last video as a VP member. J None came back 8 weeks later when he got out of Navy boot camp and did Friends On The Other Side. DeeJay has been in several other videos with VP..... You're My Best Friend, Bang, Butter, Christmas Don't Be Late.
I think this arrangement by Geoff is definitely not what is expected. When you hear The Way You Make Me Feel in your head, one of the first things that pops in is that beat. However, I think that's precisely why this is so genius. It holds back, and even though there are no drums through the majority of this cover, you still hear them in your head. Then when they give us that bass drop and Layne comes in with the percussion it hypes me up every single time because it was earned. Not expected, but I totally love it. Great reaction and analysis as per usual. I can totally see where you're coming from on your critique, though. Even sitting I find myself moving around more than the guys while listening to this, and I don't understand how they can force themselves to sit so still. 😆
This is supberb, cool. smooth and sexy. You should know by now that VP create, then never, ever, recreate, if by that you mean copy. Again, they aren't MJ, the are VP. DeeJay has been with VP in a number of videos: Bamg. Butter, My Best Friend, Man in the Mirror, In My Room, and The Chipmunk Song, from memory. That old school lounge feel you can see to perfection in Geoff's Till Then. Trust me.
Once again, we had the same thoughts (most of them, at least). 😁 Yeah, this rendition sounds like "made for a lounge" or something. Jazzy vibes, groovy & swinging - scratching the border to "sexy time" songs (no red lights needed in the lounge, but you know...)😜. And then the final part with the beatboxing giving a more open feeling, more swing. I personally don't miss some dance moves, but I can understand the expectation or the wish for it. It would match the song and VP's version completely . ("Geoff moonwalking the stage" is an image I carry with me the next days!🤣) And don't pressure yourself! You don't have to be one of the fastest reactors, to be one of the favorite reactors (at least to me).😉 I always like your "1MannzOpinion", because you have one (opinion, I mean). You found or constitute what you are thinking - and that is comprehensible. Even if ones pov may differ, one can always understand why you see it your way. And that is what I like.

I may have grown up in the age of MTV and VH1, but I never had cable, so the whole dance aspect of music videos bypassed me. So the lack of dance here has no effect in my expectations of the song. Musically, I like this better than the original. And it has a very VP stamp on it which I love.
I rewatched MJ's video again a few days ago for the first time in years. To tell the truth, the song was great but the video hasn't aged well. It felt a bit sleazy/creepy. Does that make sense?
Although it’s originally a Micheal Jackson song Voiceplay always makes their covers their own. I would never expect them to do a song the same as the original. That’s what makes them so interesting. It’s a new song but in someway they will give a nod to the original. And to be real, no one should ever try to copy MJ
I have a silly question. VP has a bunch of different types/styles of microphones in this video - but since they are lip-synching to an already recorded studio master of the song, those mics aren't really doing anything. So, are the different types/styles of mics what they would actually use if they were performing the song live, or are they just whatever mics they could find on the day?
You're right that these particular mics in the video are just for show, but when they do perform live, in ideal situations, they utilize specialized mics, particularly for the bass and beatboxing. I'm no expert here, but the idea is that different mics can be built to have different sensitivites and you can fit the mic to the job you want it to do.
