Great video thank you 👍🏼. An odd question for you, but do you see any benefit to buying leica mount voightlander lenses used with an adapter on a Fuji x system? I’m on a X-E2 and want to be exclusive manual but not sure if the Fuji mount voightlander lenses were underwhelming vs. the leica ver. Thanks again
The biggest benefit for M-Mount lenses is probably twofold: greater selection of focal lengths and their compatibility with any Fujifilm camera. The X-Mount Voigts only sync up with the newer cameras, so if we buy one for an older model, we're wasting money on a capability we cannot use.
@@photographybypetercharles9939 The Voigtlanders wouldn’t be any less compatible than the Leica M mount lenses. AFAIK no M to Fuji X adapter supports the contacts of Leica M anyway. I’d say the advantage generally is in Voigtlander native Fuji as they are small and designed for APS-C ans have aperture rings going in the same directions as other Fuji lenses. An option to consider if you can’t utilize the contacts is to go for a non-Voigtlander APS-C manual lens. Can probably save quite a bit of money that way.
X-Mount Voigtländers connect to the camera's electronics only from the X-Pro3, X-T3 etc. and newer, so if we buy one of these lenses for older cameras, we're paying for electronics that we cannot use. I've owned three M-mount lenses and used them with the Fujifilm adapter so I know how they work. It's not about the X-Mount lenses being "less compatible" rather it's about knowing that the electronics won't work on older cameras. That's the point I'm making.
Thanks for the video, it’s very informative. You said there are other lenses with better performance, which ones do you have in mind for 18mm focal length (except the bulk and heavy 18mm f1.4 from Fuji 😅)
I was specifically thinking about the f1.4 but I also suspect that some of the zooms will outperform it as well. I ran a test with it against my 18-120mm at 18mm with both lenses at f8. That zoom is not highly rated for sharpness, yet the corners of the zoom outperformed the 18mm at f8. The 18-55mm f2.8-4 would probably blow the 18mm f2.8 out of the water. If I was looking for maximum sharpness at wide angle, it wouldn't be the first lens I'd reach for.
I have the Voigtlander 27mm and for static subjects I find the most reliable is to use the automatic focus check that the Voigtlanders provide. So I keep focus peaking setting turned off, yet I have the automatic focus chck turned on so my view zooms in as I turn the focus knob. Lightly pressing the shutter (same as for AF) will instantly show the full composition again. For stuff where I nee to be faster I combine focus peaking (low, red) with BW film sim (I use raw so colors still available, I suppose film sim bracketing would enable the same for JPG shooting). Also: f22? For such a wide focal length even f8 would give a very deep in-focus image. I mean, the “f8 and be there” expression comes from someone shot in 50mm! Sorry for a bit harsh here, but because of your technique here I don't quite trust your assessment of it's performance like I have with your other reviews. That said, thanks for covering all these Voigtlander lenses! It's a topic that not too many (english speaking) channels cover.
I use focus check turned on as well. As for f22, keep in mind that the sharpness falls off from the plane of focus even at f22. The camera may be reporting a very deep depth of field, but sharpness is not uniform across that depth of field, being at maximum sharpness at the plane of focus and then dropping off gradually, the farther we are from that plane. I was assessing how accurately I could locate that plane within the image. My actual problem was my focus peaking was set to white, when red would have been better for the subjects I was shooting. The white was difficult to see at times against some of the backgrounds.
