Another of Voigtländer's awesome APO Lanthar range, this time with a macro (1:2) ability. This one has become particularly well-respected over the years by those who have tested it; let's see what it can do.

This is the best glass in my Sony arsenal that includes some top dollar GMs. The joy of using this lens is hard to describe, it's like driving a classic manual transmission car with a perfectly tuned engine. It also happens to produce incredibly beautiful and sharp images once you nail down the focus which can be a bit tricky to use at first. When shooting at smaller apertures first go wide open, focus then step down to your desired f value and you'll get good results every time.

One thing the reviewer neglects to mention is that this is a flat field lens design. It's perfect for fine art repro and precision copy work.

I think this is one of the top 5 best lenses natively made for E-mount. While it is a bit of a specialty lens, it has a sharpness, handling and way of rendering colours that is just world class. I really love this lens, and it's better than its big brother the 110mm f2.5 Apo Lanthar, which is a macro lens with a 1:1 reproduction ratio (i.e. Voigtlander offers that option too). For 1:1, I still prefer the Sony 90mm f2.8 Macro which is razor sharp and has the nice manual focus clutch, while retaining the option of autofocus.

Thank you very much for finally reviewing this Lens, although I already have got it, It is a outstanding good Lens which have resolution enough for my Sony A7RIV´s 61 megapixels and more for future Cameras. I also Have the Vogigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical, I really hope that Voigtländer will make more prime APO Lenses, fx 24mm and 135mm. I have the Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm 2.0 and it is just as good for macro as for Landscapes, so this is a very versatile allround Lens you can use for any type of photography, I can very highly recommend this excellent Lens ! I have seen many reviewers criticize the focus throw of the Voigtländer Macro Lenses, but the 110mm have only 90 degree turn from infinity to 80 cm, which not is lot and in the "normal" range of most photography, in fact many macro Lenses have too short a focus throw, so focusing in the "normal" range can difficult. For macro photography is is good with a long focus throw !

picked up this sucker for $345 used, just a tiny blemish on the corner of the lens that's impercetible in 95% of the shots, and wow, it's made me start looking for my next voigtlander, was gonna get the Sony 35mm 1.4 GM but now I'm thinking about trying one of the voigtlanders, either the APO or the Nokton 1.2... even considering getting it in M mount and using the Techart adapter that would give it AF, seems to work decently well and to combine these optics w AF would be heaven

I found out about the Voigtlander 65 mm through Dustin Abbott's channel. I like it; yet, it is really heavy. I am beginning to doubt my ability of holding it still as I have not heard others mention that challenge. I do find it hard to focus if there are not vertical or horizontal lines in the subject because it is not so clear cut. The focus ring is smooth, but it seems to me a lot of turning is required. Have others mentioned it is hard to focus too? The transitional bokeh is beautiful and plan to use the lens mainly on a tripod.
@chesslover8829
@chesslover8829 Год назад
For those who are not accustomed to manual focusing, the Voigtlander 65mm can be a bit of a challenge because of its size, weight, and bulk. So in-camera stabilization is almost a must, and one should make use of the camera's built-in focusing aids for best results. Even though the lens has no autofocusing capability and can't do one-to-one reproduction, it's nearly perfect in all other regards.

I would love to see Voigtlander create a whole line of lenses in the APO Lanthar series. This is a *stunning* lens from every review I have seen. Its only drawback for some will be manual focus, but focus assistants like peaking make that less of a concern these days on most resolutions sub-50 MP.

They are close to it; with a 35mm, 50mm, 65mm macro and 110mm macro. All that's missing is a wide angle lens, maybe an 85mm. Personally, I wouldn't buy only these lenses. They're fun to use, but as workhorse lenses I prefer autofocussing lenses.

@@sallybillman3593 Yes, that's correct, but these are not Apo-lenses. That said, the Nokton-lenses are awesome too. My favorite is the 40mm f1.2 for Sony E-mount. Stellar lens. @@Edwin-- Not clear about your answer. What is correct? Is there something I can do to focus better? Is the description of my focus experience with the Voigtlander common: e.g. not clear cut in focusing and a lot of turning the focus ring?
@Edwin--
@Edwin-- 2 года назад
@@sallybillman3593 The Apo-Lanthar and Nokton lenses have different lens designs, and therefore also have a different look. There are 3 methods of manually focussing; use magnification in your camera, use 'focus peeking' where the area in focus is coloured e.d. in red in your view finder / display, or pre-focus a manual lens onto a certain area and wait until your subject comes into the right location. It takes a little practice, but overall it works well. Start with shooting with a larger F-stop. The deeper the depth of field is, the easier it is to focus and the higher the chance of succes. If you shoot e.g. f1.2 at short distance, the plain of focus is very thin and focussing may be more difficult. Sometimes it then helps not to move the focus ring, but physically move with the camera until the subject is in focus. Takes some nice experimenting... 😊

For everyone that complains about price, etc... This lens is not new. It is praised for its qualities by reviewers, pros and enthusiasts, globally, the last few years... And yes, if you want this quality, you will have to pay for it! A Leica or Zeiss of the same quality, would cost several thousands... Personally, the only reason I don't own this lens is that it is too heavy for my taste...

Nice review, thank you Christopher. I'm wondering if this being a 65 lens, might it bring up the 75mm frame lines on Leica M cameras. The low distortion is a big plus for me, which is an imperative when photographing artwork for reproduction and copy applications. .. 👌 and indeed for Architecture.

A shame they don't make the same lens for L mount bodies, there is a Sigma L mount AF lens but its not also a macro. Since Voightlander is known for its Leica M lenses they should go into L mount where Leica has the CL, SL, SL2, SL2-s. I like the electric contact features. Around this focal length, I think "yes". While I have never tested them side by side, the Sony 90mm f2.8 Macro and the Sony 135mm f1.8 are also incredibly sharp. I think I'd put my money on the 135mm as sharpest lens, but that's just my guess. The Sony 90mm is very sharp and a solid performer, the 110mm Apo is less good than the 65mm Apo in my opinion but it has a but character than the Sony which is a bit clinical.
