CBS Radio MYSTERY THEATRE is a radio drama series created and directed by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982. Later in the early 2000s the show was repeated by the NPR satellite feed.
The format was similar to that of classic old time radio shows like The Mysterious Traveler and The Whistler, in that the episodes were introduced by host E. G. Marshall who provided pithy wisdom and commentary throughout. Unlike the hosts of those earlier programs, Marshall is fully mortal, merely someone whose heightened insight and erudition plunge the listener into the world of the macabre.
CBS Radio MYSTERY THEATRE was broadcast each weeknight, at first with a new program each night. Later in the run, three or four episodes were new originals each week, and the remainder repeats. There were 1,399 original episodes.

I am heading to Galveston Island Monday and during the drive the CBSRMT is my favorite thing to enjoy on the drive.. It's quiet & I can really enjoy these wonderful episodes. I also listen to an episode at night while cooking dinner. I love this program & am so very thankful we have them to enjoy. 💚🎭🌊

Sometimes I can pick up the WBBM signal. When my local station stopped running radio dramas, I'd dial in WBBM. Long live AM radio.

I lived by Mitchell Field Airport, Milwaukee. Yep, around 1974-1976, on my nifty little transistor radio, I had to move that dial just so to pick it up, listening with that one little ear bud 😀

In Yesterday's Murder, at 24:19, "why do they always have to change the famn things? You remember one combination, then..." kinda like our passwords today, you just get used to one and you get a notice you need to change it 😜😀🤦‍♀️

For radio shows, back in the 70s and further into the 40s-50s, SFX was another character.

The first drama started out interestingly but had an incongruous ending that seemed to have been spliced on. Also, despite having said Dottie (?) would not see him again, Mr Carpenter returns and makes a pig's breakfast out of the whole plot. Eric the Red, indeed!

Obscene? 🥹

@@DJAC63 As I recall, a man and woman are panting and making other suggestive noises during a love making scene. Hope you weren't enticed into listening to this in the hope of more lascivious content. 😇
@DJAC63
@DJAC63 Год назад
@@nakedpnkmolerat Anything but. Good grief. What an assumption to leap to. I was merely expressing doubtfulness that any such content could appear in any radio play from the classic eras. And having heard the episode now, discovered that it contains nothing of the sort. Perhaps, in your memory, you’re confusing this with something else. Although as you originally state it is THE most obscene thing you have ever heard but then go on to qualify this as being ‘as I recall’…. Well; one has to wonder if the old saying is applicable here:- They do say you get out of any drama those things you bring to it from within yourself…
@nakedpnkmolerat
@nakedpnkmolerat Год назад
@@DJAC63 I stand by my original post that I wrote right after listening to the drama. I say 'as I recall' because it was 2 weeks ago and I'm an avid radio drama adherent and the intervening 2 weeks have left me without a clue as to what this particular one was about.
