BANGGOOD link - bit.ly/2L8N37j Beautiful big monster. Very efficient power setup, can carry heaps of weight, glides beautifully and would thermal with ease. Flying weight 2300g with 2 x 4s 3000mAH LIPOs. Minimum cruise on 3A to 4A, confident level flying on 5A. Climbs easily on 8A. Duration test - 30min used 1850mAH so this battery setup would allow 1hr 20min safely (landing gear removed) Needs rudder for smooth turns due to adverse yaw, big wheels only useful for smooth landing strips. Can easily takeoff from rougher ground with the single fuselage wheel. Hand launch OK if you have a decent throwing arm.

Looking good without the silly 'tundra tyre' undercarriage (that was never going to work, with the high thrustline). I'd ditch the tailwheel as well, which would clean it up even more and help with the CG too.

Such a baller ending to pinpoint land with the flaps, then pick it up and address the tail cam. I've been researching what my ~2m "battery bus" is going to be, and I think this is the winner. Super efficient, while also capable of carrying massive battery weight, and also readily available with lots of 3d printable FC/inav mounts. I have a couple of bucket-list flights that I want to be able to complete (circumnavigating a few islands), and I think this is the wing that's going to get me there.

Another great video Andrew. Hmmm. 5.5 amps at about half throttle cruising speed. Looks like this is a definite aerial mapping platform. I suspect you might get a little more practicality if you dumped the large wheels. Most are probably used to hand launches anyways. Like the way the big landing gear comes off with just two screws. Ironic isn’t it that it takes off as good, if not better, than with the large wheels on. I would go as far as to say that this is an ultimate, affordable mapping platform. Volantex hit another home run with this one. Greetings from Florida USA.
@AndrewNewton

I understand why they included the big wheels, so a gimbal wouldn't hit the ground. But they are too far back and maybe not lifting the nose high enough. Without the landing gear to comes alive

Hello Andrew! First of all - thank you for all your video series, the format is just excellent - subscribed! :) I would like to get an advice: I have some FPV accessories (a base for long-range) I bought in the past which I would like to utilize, but I am not very skilled with the actual flying, I only have some experience with EasyStar simple FPV setup and a custom flying wing. My target is to explore the surrounding scenery with an ability to make some long distance trips like flying onto a "mountain on the horizon" and back, maybe do some height "personal records". I would like to carry usual FPV stuff like APM / GPS / HD camera, possibly some gimbal in the future ... So far (also thanks to your reviews), I ended up with 2 options - the Mini Talon and Volantex Ranger 2000... and I just can't decide what is more suitable for me as both options have their advantages I find very useful. Speaking of Mini Talon, I love it's portability (no need to detach wings for the transportation) and the room for all the equipment, better wind penetration, more for long-range (I think?)... but Ranger on the other side allows to fly slower (from what I have seen), it is more forgiving to handle due the glider characteristics, it can do thermalling, should be easier to hand-launch, the durable fuselage ... Sorry, I know it is maybe more about making clear what is important for me, but I just can't decide, so maybe you could add some important points which could help me with the decision? :) Thank you!
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton 5 лет назад
Hello Jan, it's a 50/50 choice. I prefer the Ranger for pure flying and the tough fuselage, but it's hard to fit the gear in. I think the mini Talon might suit your needs better for covering distance and carrying FPV gear.

That rediculous UC and the high pusher thrustline was never going to work, what were they thinking? If you use the original mono wheel it pushes the nose into the ground without a load of up elevator..Who tests these things? Odd when you consider how well engineered the rest of it is.

Andrew, I am not new to fpv quads but planes I am and I know here in the UK we have Painless360 to ask questions but after watching most model aircraft videos you pop up most, your reviews seem to be down to earth and honest, I would like to buy a plane when I can get back into work (covid 19) I am a newby so would I be ok to buy the Volantex Ranger 1600 and eventually use it as a fpv platform, do all the instructions come with the plane eg how to set it up or is that something that comes with experience, the main Inspiration for me wanting to fly planes is how relaxing it looks and you make it look very easy, I thought of adding the zohd flight controller as it has all the features I would like without the hassle of setting up and just go out and fly and crash, I am not technical so easy is my game.
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton 4 года назад
Hi Alan. The Ranger 1600 is my favourite all-rounder but something like a Bixler 2 or Skysurfer X8 would be a bit easier to begin with. They are lighter and can fly slower. Just learn to fly first then think about FPV and flight controllers once you stop crashing.

According to my wikipedia and rcgroups research... ahem... I mean... as a professional plane designer, I think the wheels should typically be at or slightly ahead of the leading edge. Reason being that they need to be a bit ahead of the CG to make sure the plane will sit on the ground properly at rest and not nose over on tiny bumps, yet not so far ahead of the CG that rotation is difficult. Looks to me like these wheels are simply too far back, they could easily be an inch or more further forward, with that diameter and nice soft rubbery material the grass you were on doesn't look like it should be a problem.
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton 5 лет назад
Yes, I think angling further forward, longer legs and maybe bracing up to the nose would do the trick. Then you could mount a gimbal safely.

Totally different style of plane really. R2400 is for heavy lifting and the ASW28 is a scale glider (everyone has the same problems as you with it). The Phoenix Evolution is the best thermal glider in the Volantex range if that's what you're after.

Does the 2400 have the same fuselage as the 2000 ?

The wheels just don't do anything for me. Other than that it looks super!

How do you like it now, after a month of owning it?

I have only had about 4 flights but it has impressed me every time. Highly recommended Steve.

@@AndrewNewton Oh trust me, I am ready to buy, but I have no place to fly this.

Do you think a 10000 man 4s would fit ?

Yes, the multistar 10,000 mAh 4s battery does phyically fit in the fuselage. I still have to finish assembly and check CG after all additional FPV gear is installed to determine actual placement of it; however, it looks very promising. At the same time the results Andrew is achieving with 6000 mAh is great. I may just stick with the 5000 mAh batteries I have on hand and keep it light.

Andrew, a brief question: A really roomy platform, but when it comes to extreme endurance; do you think that 10+ hrs with 50.000 mAh Li Ion is possible ?
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton Год назад
That would require average current draw of 4A, which probably is not possible with all the extra weight

@@AndrewNewton I am quite aware of this "run-away effect: More power needed - larger battery - larger mass - more power needed ... There is a quite intersting clip on RU-vid about this topicand that Ranger 2400 is consuming just 4,8 Amps for level flight. Totally agrred that it will be more in case of a larger battery.
