"Nel blu dipinto di blu" (English: In the Sky, Painted Blue), popularly known as "Volare" (flying), is a song recorded by Italian singer-songwriter Domenico Modugno. Written by Franco Migliacci and Domenico Modugno, it was released as a single on 1 February 1958.
Winning the eighth Sanremo Music Festival, the song was chosen as the Italian entry to the Eurovision Song Contest in 1958, where it won third place out of ten songs in total. The combined sales of all the versions of the song exceed 22 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most popular Eurovision songs of all time and the most successful Sanremo Music Festival song ever.
It spent five non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 in August and September 1958 and was Billboard's number-one single for the year. Modugno's recording subsequently became the first Grammy winner for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1958.
The song was later translated in several languages and it was recorded by a wide range of performers, including Bobby Rydell, Dean Martin, Al Martino, Jerry Vale, David Bowie, Cliff Richard, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli, Dalida, Gipsy Kings, Chico & the Gypsies, Deana Martin and Barry White.

74 yrs old, hearing this song in Italian and remembering my father’s beautiful tenor voice also singing this song in Italian.......thank you. Does anyone remember the evening variety show, possibly Ed Sullivan, when this singer did a spin and ended facing the curtain instead of the audience and the emcee (Sullivan ?) turned him around ?

By far one of the best songs ever ever created. I speak English, Spanish and little bits and pieces of Polish, Russian, Czech, French and Vietnamese but Italian has to be my favorite as it phonetically comes across as such a beautiful language. Who ever created this made a masterpiece.

My favourite song Am 73, takes me back to the old steam radio in 1958!!! Anyone Remember ( Alfredo ) Semprini? Sunday Nights , Semprini Seranade Piano + Orchestra ? When This guy won the Eurovision SongContest in , I think , 1958 ?, Semprini Conducted the Perfomance !!

I was about 9 when this song came out. I am Italian American, born here in the US in 49. My Mother, and her entire family came to the U.S. from Italy, and I spoke Italian only when I started school. Well. at 9, I had a sister a year older than me and one 5 years younger. So my mother, enthralled with the song as was every Italian I could talk to at the time, decided my older sister and I, would sing this song as a duet on the Ed Sullivan Show, which all America also loved. We rehearsed it day and night under her tutelage, as she sang Opera as a hobby. Well, we never made it to Ed Sullivan, but that song is burned into my heart and soul, and though my mother and sister both passed on some years ago, I still sing it to them now and then, and I hear them singing along.. I married a Polish woman and we reached our 50th year of marriage in 2018, when she passed away suddenly from Cancer. Her mother had been a very polish Mother-in-law and that meant good food and comfort and a friend. So, I learned to sing Bobby Vinton's Melody of Love, as the Polish had the same fervor with this song as the Italians did for Volare. This was all so amazing since I can't carry a tune in a bucket to the street for trash pick-up. I only yodel 2 notes Flat and Sharp, lol. But I can do it in three languages.

Although this is the true translation of the Italian lyrics there is another version and most of the lyrics are totally different to this one. That's the one I know and this one is not the one I'm familiar with.
