Would have been nice to see an early GTI Mk 1 instead. This is one of the last being built with the alloys and the "iconic" grill which both the first models didn't have. Not to mention the engine (1.8 vs. 1.6), the dashboard, the steering wheel and some other details.

Had a Mk1 Golf GTI in the early 90's, could not live with the shit brakes, despite having them looked at by various garages and saying there fine. Got rid of it after 18 months for a 205 GTI - IMO a much better handling/drivers car all round. The Golf was better built, the 205 was much more fun and pleasant to drive - kept it for 5 years.

Good review. I still have my 1983 Mk1 GTI which I have owned for the last 25 years and still gives me a buzz every time. It has a great engine and because it's so light (10 kg less than a Ford Ka Mk1 !), it really goes. Brakes could better and the low gearing means a noisy drive on the motorway but a great handling and great looking engineer's car. Give me a Mk1 over a Peugeot 205 any day.

Even though I drive a normal Mk1, it still brings a smile to my face every day after 8 years of ownership.

I'm buying my friend's dad's Golf Gti Mk1 Cabriolet in a few weeks. It's one of the last ones, with it being a H reg. So excited! It's really been looked after; it's in brilliant condition.

I feel blessed having start off with a MK2 GTI as my first car. Never thought I'd actually get to own one. I Love people's laughter and warm smiles when I show my car off to them. People seem to like the retro design, simplistic features and non-computerized highly dense enginneering of it. The VW GTI revolutionary history makes me enjoy my car even more.

I have a 92 16 valve GTI MK2. These are really rare in the states. I’ve had it since 1999. No plans to sell. Just fixing it up a bit. Just cannot warm up to the models that followed. I like the simplicity and style.

I wonder how much my Mk1 , 1.6l with a 5 speed box and a Factory Sunroof in good nick, Lhasa Green 78k original miles is worth?. Must get it out of the garage soon :)

Will never happen. I had a bunch of these and MK2 VWs and a BMW tii.... and none of them will ever pass this way again. The 1 series is as close as it comes and the new GTi over course is a fantastic car but well, you know... it weighs what, 70% again right? No amount of power can change how that feels :(

Thanks for the feedback. You may prefer the Peugeot's design - a fine piece of work from Pininfarina - but bear in mind there is around 10 years between the two designs.

Very good and balanced review. I am from germany and used to have one back in 1979 brand new when I was 20 years old. Black and with the new 5-speed gearbox and a sunroof. I'd love to drive one now. It was an exceptional vehicle and indeed a lot of fun to drive, before all the electronic gadgets and unnecessary things we have these days.
