Most people can’t afford these cars . I changed recently to a 2017 bmw 520d and at 25000 was the most I ever spent on a car , I can’t imagine spending 45 to 60 grand on any car . Great review as always nobby

Exactly. Only a small percentage of people can afford these cars. Two people I know bought on lease but both gave them up because of the high repayments. Not to mention the inconvenience and basically aren't practical for a busy young couple.
@Frank71

Most people can't afford EVs. The EV community want to force you to buy a car you can't afford. They been quietly passing mandates to ban non-EV cars.
@markpb

@@cwwiss1 What do the young couple do with their car that makes EVs impractical? 😃 We’re a single car, BEV family with three young children, two jobs, school runs, after-school activities, summer camps, Saturday morning football matches, etc. In-laws are 150km and 320km away (each way). I’ve yet to find anything impractical about it. There definitely are people that they won’t suit but that number is getting smaller all the time. It’s a leap of faith.

A brand new car isn’t affordable to most people let alone a BMW 5 Series. Hence a healthy secondary market that puts many brands and vehicles within reach. Also, nobody factors total cost of ownership into their equation. 10 year of premium gas has a real impact on your cash flow vs what most people would pay for electric.
@Frank71
@Frank71 2 года назад
@@kayarosenbloom1976 Yes a brand new car isn't affordable, if we are talking about BMW 3 series, Tesla or an ID4. A Toyota Corolla and a Nissan Kicks are affordable, but not trendy. Cars arn't affordable, because of lax credit and people are moving to higher trim levels and SUVs. Repos did pick up during the pandemic as many lost their jobs in combination of car notes exceed more then 30% of their take home pay and mortgage/rent exceeding another 30%.,(your a pay check away from ruin) still have to feed the kids/yourself and save. If you can't afford an EV, the saving in gas from electric are meaningless.

Great review. Good to see you getting your hands on a spec similar to the Enyaq. I think VW Ireland made a bit of a boo boo giving a 1st edition to journalists early on when Skoda had a much higher speced car doing the rounds. The max edition is a better like for like review. You're dead right about these cars fitting absolutely fine into people's lives. No need to be negative about them anymore. Traded in my second Tiguan early for an ID4 business. It will be interesting to see if VW continue with the Tiguan in two years time.

Hi Nobby just recently came across your channel and very impressed with it. I currently have a hybrid but looking at going full BEV so great reviews here. So nice to get an Irish perspective. Keep it going. One question though what are your thoughts on night rate electricity when you have a BEV? I'm hearing comments can only really go for it if majority of electricity usage is during the night. Would love views on the pros, cons, and how to go about it. Many thanks
@NobbyOnCars

Thanks for watching Shay. I did read recently that you'd need to be doing decent enough mileage to justify the extra charge they ask for to have a split meter. I have a smart meter in my house and a year or so ago they still wanted 150 quid to switch to a night rate and I don't do enough kms in an EV personally. It's worth shopping around and at nearly 20c per kW with ESB, there has to be cheaper by looking. They all get you in the end though I feel, cheap rate at the start and then ramps up after that.

Got my id4 pure (style) did a trip from wicklow to kerry no worries at all. Only one charge needed each way at 52kw battery. Charge took 30mins. Caveat when charging with esb they will charge you a tariff of €4.50 once over 45mins. I'd advise charger from home for long journeys at 100% charge. Every day charging at home charge to 80%. If you need to recharge during the long journey, charge to 80% as it will reduce waiting time and hopefully esb tariff. Love this car.

Great review Mark really enjoyed it, regarding price of EVs I don’t see prices coming down a hell of a lot anytime soon( global pandemic , shortage of semiconductors in manufacturing)You can see already the Irish government are making ICE motors more expensive, VRT , VAT, Motor Tax and Tax on fuel in an effort to close the gap to EV prices. Bought Seat Ibiza in mid 2019 21k if you were to buy it today over 23k. Irish motorist will be bate out ICE motors instead of being incentivised into EVs 50k including grants is still not realistic pricing for majority of people.

I've noticed you can get an electric car for around the same price as a regular car but with less spec on it? For example my Tiguan Rline was around the same price as low range ID4. The cost of the battery removes things like sunroofs, keyless entry, electric tailgate etc... To get as close a spec as I could to my Tiguan on an ID4 I'm going to be paying €150 extra a month but still no sunroof. I suppose you can jump into an electric car for a good price but you'll be sacrificing a lot of bits.

Same shit here in North America. Gas is over $4/Gallon in California and it still cheaper to get a modest ICE car in mid 20's. ID.4 in U.S. is 40K. That leaves you 15K difference. Oil changes are CHEAP, so it would take you close to 10 years to break even. Not worth it.

Something that I haven’t heard anyone talk about is the charging capacity of a house. What I mean is a 7kW charger will give a a max of approx 30 amps. So if you plug in your car that’s almost empty, then go shower (32A approx) or use an electric cooker etc, so turn on some electrical loads. You will probably blow your mains 63A fuse. Also do you know if your only allowed have one 7kW charger per house? I know we’re not even near one EV per household hold but something to plan for for the future is a household with more than one EV.
@NobbyOnCars
@NobbyOnCars 3 года назад
If you limit the charger to 7-7.2kW it shouldn’t cause an issue. Hasn’t been a problem for me anyway but the house was wired for a charger to begin with
@S7tronic
@S7tronic 3 года назад
Max charge capacity on single phase is indeed 7.2kW, 32A. If you have an electric shower or something else with a large load in your house, the sparks should fit a changeover switch at the bare minimum; this basically cuts power to the car charger if you turn on the shower. Better quality/smart chargers can also be connected to a sub meter which monitors the total electrical capacity at your board and ramps up or down the charge available to the car based on this. Much more elegant solution than a changeover..

myenergi sells a 7kW charger (Zappi) that by means of a simple sensor will limit the power the charger takes to stay within the maximum you set. Im an EV driver myself the past 5 years and agree the cost of New EVs is a lot of money. The saving is in the Fuel and Maintenance costs over the longer term. I personally have always bought used EVS and on my 4th ev at present a Hyundai Ioniq 28kwh model. I charge 95% of the time at home, so pay a fraction of the cost of running a Diesel or petrol car. Ive only ever bought used Cars and my recent Cars where bought through Electricautos.ie I think the Chinese ev manufacturers are going to eventually dominate the market as their selling evs similar to the current price of New Petrol and Diesel Cars. The MG ZS EV is an Example of a good ev car available in Ireland. Most people dont have 50k to buy a Car. They go for PCP deals and monthly payments with a deposit usually from the Sale of their old Car. They are effectively DEBT Slaves until they pay off these loans. Ive always said no is forced to buy a car, so the companies will keep increasing prices as their in the business of maximizing their profit. If Buyers went on strike , then prices would likely come down. ive always saved hard to purchase my Cars and the used Car market is the way to go if you want to be debt free.

Just have a look at Hoovies Garage video on his Tesla before you spend your cash on an ev. He explains the downside of having an ev once the battery pack warranty runs out. New battery pack for a Tesla in the USA is , seemingly, north of $17,000. He makes a valid point that all manufacturers refuse to repair batteries but insist ,at enormous expense , in replacing the entire pack. This will mean your depreciation towards the end of the battery pack warranty will be epic. No doubt, repair will become possible, as years pass ,but it’s a risk you need to know about.

Drum brakes don't rust or squeal like disc brakes on an electric car. Besides, they are hardly ever used, at all, with regenerative brake recharging.
@rene9582
@rene9582 2 года назад
@@randyvanvliet226 I don’t see any rust on disc brakes on any Tesla, Polestar, etc. I watch carefully each time. Even the Renault Zoe has disc brakes on all wheels. It is simply a cheap built quality of VW. And why does Audi E-Tron have disc brakes? It belongs to the same concern. If the real reason was preventing rust Audi would have drum brakes as well.

You don't need fast charging??? You really need to re-think that statement

If you don’t do motorway driving regularly, 50kW is fine.

There’s just no way with that small battery pack size that it will ever get 300 miles with normal driving

@@MisterHaynes99 it's a 77kWh battery. So you don't own one, have no experience of one yet you can come on and make a statement like your initial one? No problem with opinions but yours seems fairly ignorant.

@@NobbyOnCars I own a 2015 e-Golf SEL here in America. 84 miles on a really perfect good day, no change in elevation at destination, no head winds, smooth polished concrete at 55 to 60 mph. That's what you'll see. I have a 6 year old battery in my e-Golf now, was 24 kWh when new, battery is now somewhere a bout 75% capacity of what it was new. Nowhere near that 6 years later, with 31k miles on it. I also have a 2014 VW Touareg TDI Lux in Turbodiesel. It still gets 750 to 800 miles of travel on 100 Liters of diesel fuel, despite being 7 years old and 60k miles on it. My TDI isn't losing range between fillups. I can still easily go 700 -800 miles in a day in the Touareg, in comfort, no stopping and waiting for a fast charge fill up.
