I just replaced mine and had the same pile of the insulation in the same spot next to the filter. In my case and I think in yours as well, there did not appear any mouse droppings or other rodent signs. I suspect the baffle material on the removed lid just naturally comes apart from the air currents over time. I put in some replacement foam I had lying around after replacing the filter.
Exactly... did mine yesterday and the same pile of material appeared. I just cleaned/vacuumed it out and put a Bosch cabin filter on top of the mesh air intake. ;-)
2000 Beetle here. I'm adding my voice to the "i also found a mouse nest in my cabin filter" But mine also went up the A pillar. Over the headboard, Then down the B pillar on the drivers side. into the floor compartment in the backseat, There is a small void on each side of the back seat that was filled with nest as well, My beetle smells way better after this intense cleaning.

The 2007 I drive does not have a cabin filter either. It to had a mouse nest. There is a water drainage opening in the back right hand corner that the mice use to enter in.
This happen to my beetle. And he chewed up the air filter and the cloth filter attached to underside of the panel. I don't know where to get the replacement fabric under the panel. :-( Winter cold gets in easy.
Just went to change the cabin filter in my daughter's 2007 beetle and found the same ,mouse nesting ever,where and no carbon filter ,just a foam,metal grill over the air inlet
Beetles are the worst to work on IMO. I replaced the heater core, awful job pulled the whole dash. I replaced the vacuum pump without pulling the transmission awful job as well. My 2007 was my youngest daughters driver .
How are you gonna clickbait a TUTORIAL?? Why not put in the START of the video that this car model doesn't have a cabin air filter. I took apart my entire dash just like the video just to hear "so this went a little sideways." You seem nice but like c'mon put it in the start of the video so I'm not wasting my time.
