Volkswagen Passat Reliability and Problems (B6)

The B6 generation of the Volkswagen Passat was a turning point for the brand, in which VW promised better reliability following its poor reputation for quality with the B5 and B5.5 generation of the Passat. In this video, I cover all of the problems and issues of my family's 2008 Volkswagen Passat 3.6 4motion sedan that has 117,000 miles. Feel free to leave any questions or comments in the section below the video. I hope you enjoy the video!

I had a 2007 Passat wagon and never had any issues with it. I had it for 10 years and put 122,000 miles on it. Only reason I sold it was because I wanted a new Passat. But for me it was a great car. Only major problem I had was the ignition coils/spark plugs but that’s normal. I was able to fix myself.

It's not real leather. Vw and Mercedes have used synthetic materials for years. Aux port in glove box for phone connectivity. Don't know why you wired one in. I ordered mine and had to wait to have it shipped over. Such a great vehicle! 78,000 on my 2008. No problems after warranty except clock spring which was about $225 at my mechanic. Ordered artic blue with corn silk beige interior. Get compliments all the time even though she's almost 10 years old.

Jason Schwartz This vehicle came with an iPod adaptor in the glove box instead of an aux port. It didn't have an aux port in the center console either like some models. It was an oddball that the first owner bought lol. I've known that German vehicles have had V-Tex for years, my mom's '08 Jetta had it. The VR6 Passat and CC had real leather though, and possibly the '06 - '08 luxury trim of the 2.0T Passat. But I agree on the styling! It still looks elegant and great today!

My 2006 b6 has been a nightmare, but i wouldn't be without it! Failed parts to date:- + Rear Bonded suspension bush arms, +front bushes, +dmf x2, +upper gear box mount incl. engine mounts (dropped the lot out of the bottom of the car nearly, only the plastic skid plate held it in the engine bay) + master and slave cylinders, +fuel pump, +turbo boost pressure sensor, +airbag sensor, +engine cover sawed through the coolant pipe due to vibration. + Both electronic handbrake callipers locked up during drive ........ + Turbo failing + oil pump soon Car goes into limp mode every other day due to that turbo sensor! (vw haven't got a clue how to fix it!) Total cost of parts and labour for above items.... £7800. These cars are hit and miss... Avoid the 2006 car like the plague! --------------------------------- A note to all b6 owners.... The oil pumps on these cars are prone to failure without warning resulting in the end of your car.! Happy driving!

I've noticed with the b6 that if you don't fix the underlying engine or suspension issue as soon as possible it will develop into more horrible issues later on. If you hear a weird noise or something isn't right get it checked asap

@@Vextn I'm a bit late in replying but I'm glad that I was of help. Shortly after I posted that comment things got a lot worse. The main ECU started causing issues. It would send max fuel to the engine in gears 5 and 6 regardless as to whether I was accelerating or not. It was using approx £3 (GBP) of fuel a mile . Was quoted nearly 5 grand to have a new ECU and have it matched up to the car. It was sent to a breakers yard shortly after.

As far as those clicking door hinges all you need to do to fix the problem is to buy a can of lithium grease and spray the hinges your problem will be solved in 2 seconds no more clicking nice and quiet! Overall nice looking Passat never mind the small interior cosmetic issues. It looks like a fairly reasonable car. 👍

@abramsmm1
@abramsmm1 7 лет назад
B5/5.5 hate due to the fact that maybe 25% of them have been very reliable, another 25% serviceable, and a good half have been money pits beyond belief. Some of the money pits were well-maintained, and nothing could have stopped all the issues. Spending twice the value of the car to keep a B5 going was annoying, but when the best vw shops in the area couldn't stop my problems from recurring, I sold it back to the dealer.

I have an 06 3.6 with almost 250k. My sun visor lights doesn't work either but everything else inside does as well as my gas lid :-). The rear sunshade is usually a easy fix, mine looked like yours when I first purchased the car. The ends on the sunshade can be removed to put the clip back in place if it is not broken. I had a failed tensioner pulley recently and that also killed my AC pulley plus the PCV in the valve cover failed. Other than that the car has been stellar and still is. If I can I will try to find another lower mileage B6 or go back to Audi, I don't like how VW pushed the B7 downmarket to get more sales.
@BornToDriveOfficial
@BornToDriveOfficial 7 лет назад
I wish VW hadn't pushed the B7 downmarket either. The PCV in the valve cover actually failed in this car about 3 weeks ago. It must be a fairly common problem with the 3.6 VR6 engine.

This is a nice video and all but these are all wear and tear issues. You haven’t mentioned the numerous wiring and electrical issues these cars have. Just a heads up when something that should be a minor fix comes up it’s gonna cost over 500. The thermostats fail constantly on these cars. The ignition coils fail constantly on this car. It’s not reliable at all. The engine is the only good thing on the car. There is a reason they keep extending warranty’s on the b6

Sadly I had to give up this car after dealing with so many mechanical problems. A 2010 Passat b6 with just a little over 100,000 miles I've had to replace the vacuum pump and water pump. It was well maintained and most recently the timing chain tensioner failed (check forums) causing catastrophic damage to the cylinder head/valves. Repair was estimated to be $4200-5000.

Rear Sun Shade: I had the exact same issue with my rear sunshade a couple years ago. You don’t have to replace the whole unit! I researched online and found the small little plastic “pin” that inserts into the top rail of the sunshade and glides in the c-pillar track. It was under $10 and fixed my issue. It’s just a pain to finagle into place. ALSO, for 2.0t owners, replace your High Pressure Fuel Pump Cam Follower regularly (30k-40k miles)! It’s a poor design by VW and prone to wearing thru, which will ruin your fuel pump and cam, if not the whole engine. It’s a cheap part and most DIYers can do it in 30 mins.

A lot of plastic parts broke in mine 2007 Passat, the quality of plastic they used in this model is so poor. My 2002 Passat had much better plastic quality.

Why not use the Aux port in the center arm rest?
@BornToDriveOfficial
@BornToDriveOfficial 7 лет назад
magwwua For some odd reason, this car didn't have one. Apparently, if the car is optioned with a iPod dock in the glovebox, then the aux port in the center armrest is deleted. This car had the iPod dock in the glovebox and no aux port from the factory unfortunately

@@BornToDriveOfficial it can be rerouted to the armrest.

I have VW Passat b6 and it is terrible car for an example: Electronic E-Brake is Broken, Its very rusty (154 000 kilometers), rear center arm rest broken, A/C is not working, Hazy headlights, Engine light poped up, Emisions problems, Exhaust has hole in it, Cracked plastik from weather, Audio system dont work, ABS sensor is not working, ESP doest not work well it is horrible

lol. my Passat works like a dream. nearly every of your problem isn´t common

My experience similar. Things will fail on second user cars. The problem with these cars is the cost of fixing them.

You managed to make the same mistake i did. If you look at the service book and you only see oil changes and brake servicinh but the car is falling apart, chances are you bought it from someone who didn't maintain anything else and doesn't know about cars or is down on money.
@shueibdahir
@shueibdahir Год назад
Also the engine light and the emissions might be directly connected to the exhaust having a hole in it. Esp and abs not working are directly related to the sensor. Parking brake is a very common issue. Audio and the hazy headlights with the ac not working are the actual problems. Ac compressors in these cars are notorious for going out.

Passat NEVER with PD engine !!! Absolutely no power, unreliable, ugly car. I'll stay with my E91 3.0 xDrive BMW.

Bullshit! The PD engines are the best 4 cylinder Diesels ever made. It feels much more powerful than any common-rail engine. Also, you can´t compare a 6 cylinder engine with a 4 cylinder engine

What are you talking about? I have the 2.0 TDI 8v PD140 and that thing is a monster stock. 320nm of torque at 1700rpm. Accelerates like crazy. If I had it remapped i'd get close to 400nm. All that power while sipping diesel. One thing I noticed with my engine is that never let any engine related issue drag on. Fix it immediately. Turbo not working right? Replace it. Turbo Hose leaks? Fix it asap, you'll clog your dpf leading to a host of other issues. Injectors leaking? Fix it asap or you'll destroy it with diluted oil Dmf going out? Fix it or your engine will shake itself to death. Took care of mine and it pulls like a new engine. Although its a bit rough. Suspecting the injectors getting dirty. I'll diesel purge them and see if that fixes it.
