LAcarGUY's Parts Managers Rennie Wible (VW Santa Monica) & Gabriel Gasteiger (Pacific VW) demonstrate how easy it is to install a roof rack. This was shot in one take so you can see just how quick it is to install.
Thanks, guys! Just used this video to guide me while putting this rack on my GTI for the first time. Simple, informative and just what I was looking for.
Glad I went with the rack from VW dealer ! Super easy to install and everything fits perfect ! Was considering after market there are tons even under $100 ! But after reading some reviews how things just don’t fit as it should and how unstable some of them are ! Glad I did some research! Thank you for the vid that was a breeze
You do realize when tightening the rack on with the torque wrench you must tighten until the two arrows on the tool aligns. So by you just tightening until you feel "a little bit of resistance" is not safe. The rack may fall off. Just an FYI for everyone out there.
Hi JuiceNight, The rubber strip is used to eliminate the whistling or howling at speed from having that T-slot open with accessories loaded on it. Depending on your use, if you keep your accessory attachment on your VW fulltime you may want to cut the strip to fill any open areas around the accessory or if you use it part-time, you may want to use the whole strip when the accessory is not in use. Hope that helps. Thanks!
Does the part that mounts the carrier to the base bars move forward/back to adjust it to the space between the two bars? The reason i ask is I wanna get the barracuda attachment and I have a ROLA rack on my 2013 vw golf which also uses "t-slot" mounting, but Im not sure if the space between the bars is the same as with the VW base bars. I hope my question makes sense!
Yes, same set up as the MkV VWs. They have a locator pin on the front base bar. The rear is positioned right between the arrows on the glass. Good memory!
NVM, I tried to move the back rack to a different location, but it's made to specifically go into the location that is marked by inside the arrows on the windows. Thanks....great informative video!
random question I purchased a genuine vw roof rack like the ones in this video for my polo 5door but noticed today that they leak water into the car where they lock into place by the Window !! any ideas ??
stupid question, is the barracuda bike rack compatible with the jetta carrier bars and the golf carrier bars? might buy some from someone who previously had them on a jetta. and i drive a golf, just wondering if anyone knows, thanks for the video
Great video. Getting my base rack tomorrow. You mentioned that two door vehicles have arrows for the back rack on the window. What is the recommended distance for 4 door vehicles for spacing out front and back racks? I have a 2009 GTI.
I purchased a GTI with these installed. Can the back one with the arrows in the windows be moved back or does it have to over the arrows? I never use them, strictly decorative. There is a dent in the car that I want to cover with the endcap of the wrack by moving it back further. Please help! Thank you!!
I didn't see how this rack looked once the front door was shut. I installed VW roof rack on my 2016 Jetta SE and I'm having a LOT of wind and road noise. The weather stripping on the doors folds around the legs of the rack. This seems to let in a lot of noise - even at low neighborhood speeds. Have you experienced this and do you have a solution for it? Thanks for a great video!
Do you suggest using the securing brackets (parts 10 and 20 in the VW installation guide) that attach to the front and back bars? I see they are not used in your installation video and wonder if they are necessary.
I got the roof rack on but the from bar that has the peg isn't sitting right. The two rubber parts that sit on the car are in the are. What can I do. Help??
Hi I just got my bike roof racks recently installed by the Volkswagon tech. But now I want to uninstall it because it was going to rain over the weekend. Is it ok to leave it out the way it is in the rain?
thanks bigkamran. it was definitely a diy version. trying to get our service and parts team involved to create more and with a better cameraman (i.e. not me)
How far are the two cross bars apart? I want to carry a kayak that said the minimum distance between the cross bars and still carry the kayak is 24 inches. Thanks
Sorry I am from Seattle. Is it feasible for you to upload a small video of your doors once you mount the base rack. I like to see how snuggy the door are. In my case the outer
It depends on the year and model. All the new VW model base carrier bars (basic cross bars) do not use a standard key. They have a special coded wrench to tighten the attachment bolts. Once attached, the attachment points are all covered for a clean look. What year and model is your VW? I can answer your question a little more specifically. I hope someone can answer this for me I am about to buy a mountain bike and it's a 29er large gram I was wondering if I would have any issues fitting the bike on this rack ? Thanks
Hi, I have purchased exactly same things for my Jetta. But when i install i see some gap between the door seal and the base carrier holder. Your video doesnt talk or show how it looks when you close the door. And as far as bike rack, how to you secure it, from some body steeeling Please respond ASAP
to answer my own question. On my 4 door MKVI if you open the door in the inside on the top of the door frame there are two slight indents. I've been using them to line it up by putting them in the middle.
William B If you remove one side of the end caps on the racks, you can take the bike rack off the car and turn it 180 degrees, then slide it back into the channel in the rack, tighten the clamps and your done.
actually both the base bars and the bike attachments have locks built into them. feel free to contact us if you need more details. we are happy to help
I just bought a 2017 tiguan and am looking to put a roof rack on it. Any legit links you can send me to the type of rack I need? I don't trust myself to get the right one...
I'm assuming there's no way to make this fit a mk4 jetta, correct? Just bought these local from a guy who says he ran them on his mk4. Go to put them on and they don't fit lol.
Does the barracuda bike rack lock onto the cross bars? I saw that it clamps down but didn't see a locking mechanism. I just installed my cross bars and wanted to make sure I understood how the bike rack worked before I purchased it
LAcarGUY Dealerships I found a pair of these bike racks in my mom's shed storage. I have a set of Thule Straight bar racks. Is there a different mounting piece/set that I can use or is the bike rack basically useless? Also, the rack says they are called "city crash" but are definitely the same thing. Thanks for the feedback!
The door seal should wrap around the base snuggly. If you feel that the fitment is not snug and you are in the LA area, please feel free to drop by either Pacific VW or Volkswagen Santa Monica to verify your concerns and provide any further assistance needed. Your rack may just require a simple placement adjustment. As to bike security, all VW bike attachments and base bars have locks built in to them, and we can further discuss your available options in person.
hI GUYS i NEED YOUR HELP. iS THERE A WAY TO ODER THE KEY IF IT IS LOST? i NEED THE SAME KEY. i SAW ON THE ROOF RACK THERE IS A PART NUMBER FOR THE OEM MODEL. PLZ HELP
Some of the aftermarket attachments do indeed fit. Almost all VW model roof racks use the T-slot mounting for attachments. If you are unsure of what you have, email me a picture of the mounting area of your attachment. Also, the year and model of your VW. Rennie Wible Renniewible@lacarguy.com
hi guys. i have a three door scirocco. there are no markers on the bakc window and no bolts on the front panels. is there a reason for this??????? cheers
Seems to me that someone could just steal the entire barracuda bike rack, with or without the bike. Just pop off the caps and slide it out? Seems like they missed something when it came to designing those channels, but great looking and functioning rack!
You guys should use a person that actually know how to properly film your procedure. It would be a good idea to redo this video properly, as it contains valuable content! I get dizzy following the camera angles, back light problem and a narrow field of vision...
You tighten those suckers down, you need too, otherwise your car will get scratched, you will loose your stuff and you definitely would prevent someone with any type of tool to just steal your 350 dollar (plus your junk) racks. Duuuuh.
