The Scirocco 16v was the first true performance car I could actually afford. I felt so lucky have one. People would frequently ask, "is that a Delorean? Looking fantastic and performing far better than the numbers would suggest this was the car that turned me from regular human being into an unqualified enthusiast. The 16v was a special car assembled at Karmann Coachworks. Replaced by the Corrado there was really nothing quite like the Scirocco 16v. I hope you enjoy this review. What was the first performance car you owned? The first one you could afford. More to come. Cheers!

Great review and very glad to see all the enthusiasts and especially fellow 16V owners' responses here! I am the original owner of my '88 Scirocco 16V - I almost didn't get one as the dealer in Dallas sold their last one on the lot out from under me...thankfully they rounded one up from San Antonio. It is still the most fun car I've driven and is my daily (when not in quarantine).

I've owned my 87' 16v since 2000. Fell in love with them in High School and wanted one ever since. My wife worked for a car dealership and one day said to me, "I think there is one of those cars you like at a small lot we do business with." It was all downhill after that. I replaced the 1.8L with a 2.0L and made suspension and brake upgrades along the way. Had a custom exhaust installed as well. Love that crazy car and it has been my daily driver for the duration. It is starting to show its age as I just had to replace the ignition/steering lock assembly. Much harder to find parts these days, may have to start shopping in the UK. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm, it is one of those cars that people get excited about even today.

Mine was the Scirocco Mk1 1978. I was in my mid 20’s than. Put a 1.8 GTI motor in it, a Neuspeed cam and Koni adjustable struts with Neuspeed sport springs. 25mm and 28mm Neuspeed sway bars and engine strut brace. Tech Tuning exhaust to let it breathe. Straight pipe in place of the converter really helped, I wouldn’t do that now. You could find me on mulholland drive on Friday nights. That car could out handle any Mk2 16v scirocco back than. I did get a beautiful black 16v scirocco next. Kept that till a couple of years ago. Sold that one in perfect shape for 2700.00. I sold it way to low. Now I own three Mk1 Scirocco’s. 80 standard Scirocco model in forest green. 81 Scirocco model S light metallic blue, and a 81 Mars red Scirocco Model S. I love these cars. They aren’t in perfect shape, but not rust buckets either. I’ll put up a video on them soon. As Magnus Walker says “more smiles per mile”.

Totally agree. Such a funnnnn car to drive. I got lucky and picked one up five years ago in superb condition for $2800 Canadian dollars. If you are looking to buy one find a parts car. There were only 290,000 built over a 10 year run. They only sold in the US to 1988. In Canada through 1989. In Europe through 1992. That’s not many units over that stretch. Most were sold in Europe. Mine is a 8v 1.8 with 90hp. That is the same engine that was in the mk1 GTI, one of the most sought after VWs. I get regular thumbs up from other drivers. This is a rare automobile. I have seen just one in about 15 years on the road. Great review. I had a 1987 16v in the late eighties and it was spectacular. The eight valves are certainly easier to find engine parts for. Glad you got your dream Scirroco. I got mine and it is never leaving me.

Grega your car sounds great. Diesel and VW means it’s still a party to drive. They have always done Tdi properly. As far as the Scirocco mk3 vs the Megane, I’m sure the VW is a great trade off. That Renault was almost gt3 stiff and very unforgiving. I am confident the Scirocco would be a perfect compromise. Cheers!

In the whole GB only 2 left? Are you serious? They are rare, but only 2,wau! It is so unbelievable to hear that and that's why I am writing from a surprise. I have one 1983 gti like 250 k, but it drives same like before and it still consumes just the same like before engine oil, so, just for you to know they are crazy cars, stay the same somehow. I recommend you to wax all parts where you may reach with a small tube, the bottom parts first 15 cm height. Other than that no problems are to foresee. Have a good drive.

The 1st gen Neon ACRs were a similar car, in that they were "throwaway" cars. $14k, and when it was done you threw it away. It got a bad wrap because no one ever replaced the timing belts, until after it broke. Then it was too expensive to fix vs. what it blue booked at. If you took care of them, they were a great driver's car. But now it's getting hard to find parts.
@TimsEnthusiastGarage

Hi Tim, Congratulations for your 16V- in this fantastic condition. And as we say in Germany: 'Volle Hütte' ... this means, the car has got every extra item (like leather seats, AC ...). German (European) Sciroccos are mostly without these. My own 1990 Scirocco 16V has electric power windows. Better than nothing :o) But everytime i drive it, it's a little bit like 'Back in the 80's' ... you know what i mean! BTW: the Scirocco was NOT replaced by the Corrado. Both Cars are build as independent ones from 1988- 1992 (when VW stopped building the Scirocco). Greetings from Germany Stefan P.s. Oh, and before i forget: Scirocco 16V (in fantastic condition) - worth ~ US$ 15000 The look on your face when you spot the sheriff - priceless! Hahaha! Rock'n Roll dude!

Hi Tim, nice review, nice Rocco! So what do you think a Mk2 1982 1.6 GL Auto - unmolested, completely original factory spec, Diamond Silver, unrestored, rust free example and yes, one little old lady owner, 49k on clock would be worth? Oh yeah, she runs perfectly too.

@@TimsEnthusiastGarage Thank you for the great video! Sadly mine has been a project for the last 3 years since the original motor let go, and it's been hard finding time to fix it and get it 100% again. But I'm starting to work on it more again. Certainly your Mk2 looks less VWish than anything else at the time, but the Mk2 gained a couple hundred pounds over the Mk1, and the Corrado gained SEVERAL hundred pounds more, and the Audi TT, which was the closest natural successor gained several hundred more pounds, to the point where the TT Mk1 is ~1400lbs. more than the Sirocco Mk1, and while the lbs./hp ratio did improve across all these cars, you're right, you can't get away from the effects of mass when it comes to handling.
@TimsEnthusiastGarage
@TimsEnthusiastGarage 3 года назад
Thanks for watching and for your comment! I owned and drove TTs for about 8 years. I still really like them. They offer a lot of experience for the money. They are NOT light that is for sure. I have driven a mk1 and loved it. Sadly, I have never seen a rust free example come up for sale when I was looking to fill a spot in the garage. Lightness is one of the best sporting car attributes in my opinion, so one is still on the list. Cheers!

Can’t believe you mentioned a gtv . I sold an e30 m3, a 16v and a Alfa GTV because my doctor said I won’t be able to work a clutch. That was 2007 I’ll never afford a gtv or m3 but I’ll have my scirocco and my cayman. That doctor was wrong

Scirocco's weren't from Wolfsburg, they were from Osnabruck. The cylinder head was a Volkswagen design; The Oettinger head was completely different.
@TimsEnthusiastGarage
@TimsEnthusiastGarage 4 года назад
Bodies left the Wolfsburg plant for final assembly at Karmann. Oettinger did the design of the head for Volkswagen. Facts ;) thanks for watching and for your passion toward the VW brand. Cheers!
@Flies2FLL
@Flies2FLL 4 года назад
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage NOT true. The floorpan of a two-door European golf would occasionally be shunted off to a truck in Wolfsburg, and it would be moved to Osnabruck so that a Scirocco or Cabriolet body could be installed. And that head is INDEED 100% Volkswagen; The earlier aftermarket Oettinger head has the timing belt driving both cams, look it up uhmm...Facts. [Hello?] The 16 valve EA827 engine used in the Scirocco uses a small chain to drive the intake cam. The exhaust valves on an early EA827 4 valve engine are in the same location on a VW head as the EA827 2 valve, the Oettinger head has them slightly reclined like Toyota's 16 valve 1.5 liter engine used in the '80s MR2 and AE86. Cheers right back and be safe, but you have your facts confused.
