Honda City and Volkswagen Vento are two of the most popular upper C class sedans in the country. Today, we have picked them up to find out, which one out of these works best on Indian roads. Volkswagen subtly updated the Vento recently, the sedan gets a new diesel heart while Honda City with i-dtec engine launched last year. Let’s see how the two sedans fair.
Exterior:
When it comes to exteriors of the two sedans, its the City which looks more dapper. The new city carries a same design line, while Vento has received updates. Speaking individually, the new City gets the Honda’s new ‘Exciting H’ design philosophy which makes it look flamboyant than ever. This is sleeker and gets pronounced character line across its contours. Vento, on the other hand, is the most understated of the two, in the recent update it got new dual-beam headlamps from the facelifted Polo, updated grille, new alloys and subtle changes inside-out. But the VW has started to show its age when compared to City.
Interiors:
The interiors of both the cars have their own distinctions, the common thing is a quality that both of these have in plenty with VW taking a lead in this. But when it comes to styling Honda City is contemporary on the inside as well, with the use of gloss black trim on the dashboard and brushed aluminum-like inserts makes more sense. On the other hand, Vento gets a conventional dashboard that is high on quality, but looks a little dated when compared to City. Both cars are equally comfortable with loads of headroom and legroom for every occupant. Though, Vento’s cabin is a little more comfortable because of better sound shielding and a less clattery diesel motor. Moreover, the driver of Vento will have a wide range of steering angles to suit personal seating posture. The seats of both Vento and City are comfortable with ample support for thigh and back. On the storage front City gets a larger boot with 510 litres of space, on the other hand, Vento too gets a big boot but a slightly shorter than City.
The city comes with feature loaded car, it also has reverse parking camera, Engine start stop button and sunroof. All these features are missing in Vento. Overall, Honda City has got more inside features, it's jazzy, more stylish.
Engine:
This is a field where Vento emerges as a clear winner with its 1.5 litre TDi motor that is more powerful with 105Ps of max power and a peak torque of 250Nm that will never leave you out of power. While, City gets the newly developed 1.5-litre i-DTEC motor that produces 100ps of power with a peak torque of 200Nm. Moreover, Honda City gets a 6-speed manual transmission, whereas VW Vento gets an option to choose from a 5-speed manual or a super slick 7-Speed DSG. Vento is undoubtedly more fun to drive, quite and has better dynamic than City. On the contrary, City is more frugal with its staggering mileage of 26 kmpl, while VW Vento delivers the mileage of 21.2kmpl.
Verdict:
If your plan it to go for a car that has a better build quality, ride and handling, powerful engine yet not so radical looking you should go for the Vento and if you want a car that will be a good city car, looks sporty and comes with an economical edge, you should go for Honda City.
