We actually saw a glimpse of Ougiminami before - when Karasuno saw Shiratorizawa's match results during Inter-High prelims in S1, and one set was like 25-6 or something, I think they were playing Ougiminami, so there's some continuity. Want to give a shout-out to Ougiminami's coach though - it seemed like he didn't quite know what he was doing (maybe more of an advisor like Takeda), but he was clearly invested and trying to encourage the team. A culture thing regarding Hinata eating a pork cutlet the day of the match and Tsukishima being unimpressed with it: in Japan it's considered a good luck thing to eat something with "katsu" (meaning "win") in the name when you have an important match/exam/etc. Also, regarding Sarah's words about Hinata saying "I" - the thing is, pronouns, aren't used as much in Japanese, especially "I". It tends to be dropped whenever possible, and when Hinata talks about winning here, he actually doesn't say it (except for the part where he introduces himself), so his words can be interpreted as both "I" or "we" [Karasuno]. (Doesn't mean that he never says it though, of course)

It's not exactly pronouns that get dropped. It's the subject that will be omitted if the subject of the sentence is obvious. Unlike English where formal writing and speak requires both the subject and predicate all the time in one sentence, a sentence in japanese can stand on its own with just a predicate. It's exactly like how it works with everyday parlance English, especially when the previous sentence already referred to the subject at-hand.

Adam encouraging the guy from ougi minami to follow up with the ball reminds you that as a haikyuu watcher first time or not, you always started cheering up for karasuno but always ended up cheering for other teams and encouraging them. Every single players and non players ended up being part of the experience watching it, there is no antagonists nor protagonist for the watchers, all of them are individuals that you will bound to love

I think the translation for Shimizu's comment is close enough. I would say literally it means 'Banana suits Tanaka.' I can see why it could mean as a gag comment but I'm also leaning towards Shimizu just being surprised that combination looks good.

About Shimuzu's comment, she use the verb "niau" which means "it fits/matches" and can be used as complimenting someone about their look like saying "That haircut fits your looks" which oftens means that it looks good, but in japanese it does NOT always means that. In Shimizu's case, she's saying that Tanaka eating a banana fits him because he's looking like a monkey eating banana, she's not complimenting him but actually making fun.

Adam just so you know, because everyone here prob does, the mentality of this tournament is different from the one before. For all teams they had to go throug the same desition of whether "the 3rd years" stay or not. Some teams had their 3er years quit the team, like Ohgiminami, and some others didn't like Karasuno. So some teams are just like "trying new stuff" or had to readjust to having a different team, knowing there is still "one more year ahead of them".

not an excuse for hinata, but Japanese is a language that pretty often removes the subject and high context, he could both mean himself and the whole karasuno. Adding a subject "I" is more like a compromise for the english translation, but not 100% accurate :3 (so he is not selfish in this way)

One thing is very clear in your videos, and i think i've said it before. This is probably the best "reaction" video to anime i've seen on youtube, not only the editing is perfect, you guys seems to pass the copyright just perfectly, the commentaries are on point. It is literally everything you do, editing team and yours reactions. it's always nice that not only here but on the other channel as well, you guys are always just so right on when to pause and comment and not only that but your topics of discussion. The verb (似合う) Shimuzu uses means 'to suit, match', in other words she says ''Banana suits Tanaka''. So translation here ''Tanaka looks good with banana'' is correct in my opinion.

In Hinata's defense, when he says that he will defeat everyone and go to the national competition, in the original Japanese he does not use any pronoun such as "I". In Japanese, almost all pronouns are omitted from sentences and in most cases it is clear from the context what a person is talking about. In his sentence in Japanese, he could have meant "we'll beat everyone and go to nationals" or "I'll beat everyone and go to nationals." the rest of the sentence sounds the same no matter what pronoun is implied. About Shimizu's comment on Tanaka with a banana - in Japanese she used the term 似合う (niau) which is used a lot in the context of fashion ("it (clothes, etc.) looks good on you"). So my understanding of it is that him with a banana suits him well, if that makes sense.

Sarah, I went and saw the Haikyu movie last night "The Dumpster Battle" and it did not disappoint. My only complaint was that it went by too fast at 1.5 hours long but they still managed to make the whole match flow pretty well. Alot of great flashbacks along with some new ones concerning Nekoma that I wont spoil but the animation was top notch. They also added a small scene after the credits that points to what is coming next.

I think it’s a translation problem. Hinata is not saying “I” will beat Shiratorizawa and go to national in Japanese. Japanese is a unique language that often skips “subject”. I’m sure that he meant his team will beat Shiratorizawa and go to national.

Hinata is not being arrogant, he just has genuine belief and hunger for victory. Also, he has to say things like "I will beat everyone and go to Nationals" because he is the main character LOL 😂 It's a shounen anime thing (like "I will be the no.1 pirate/ninja/hero etc.") 😅

No! It is not that Hinata has to say it!! The "I" was translated badly here, and English and Japanese are different languages. Hinata did not use a pronoun in the Japanese version. He simply said "beat everyone and go to national!" the Subject is understood from context. Please look it up. Also it would be nice to be aware when you watch and read anime and manga that these are translated into English and other languages and the translators are usually working on a deadline, and somethings get lost in translation. Be careful when you make assumptions.

I love the backstories that give insight into both the leadership aspects of these teams, but also the part about being third years and losing out in their last tournaments. The captain shown in the flashback never gave up and didn't show emotion untill he was alone. It truely got through to the new captain, who was a second year at the time. It's such an interesting and heartwarming bond and respect that's shared in these high school teams. Especially respecting the upperclassmen and being willing to shed their "tough guy" style to actually give it their all, when their old captain comes to cheer them on!

Hi guys, my husband wants me to let you know that Hinata is not being as self-centered as it sounds in English. Japanese doesn’t rely on pronouns like English; so when the subtitles say he says “I’M going to Nationals”, he literally says just “Gonna go to nationals”, which would imply “we” and not “I”.

Shoyo's "I'm gonna win/beat everyone and go to the nationals" thingy will not go away, it's his way of showing his passion to win, no matter who the competition is. Maybe because of the pronouns it might sound selfish, but that wasn't the main point of what he is saying. Also as mentioned by other comments, the pronouns might be different when he is saying it in Japanese and when it is translated to English. I just don't think you should focus on that idea when he says those things, instead think of it as his determination that makes him not intimidated by any of his competitors.

We definitely read the comments and there was alot of good insight. It’s interesting that a lot of people like him as a person(which I totally understand). As I commented in a few of those videos, if you look at it from more of a volleyball/having played with someone like him, this is where some of the difference in opinions comes into play.

Sarah has forgotten the comments on her reaction video the first time around!! In Japanese, pronouns are not used that much. Especially "I" and "you" are not used often like we do in English. So Hinata saying "I" was a translation error and it's how English works, and since Japanese was just minus the pronoun the translator had to choose a pronoun for Hinata. Not that Hinata was being egocentric. I thought we got past that in the comments during Sarah's first watch.

6:33 Again Hinata never says " *I* will beat everybody, *I* will go to nationals"! The Japanese language doesn't include subjects in sentences; what he's actually saying in Japanese is "Will beat everybody, will go to nationals!" You can see how it's difficult to translate that into a language like English. And the translator actually DOES translate it to "WE are going to beat everybody and go to nationals" in this episode. Of course he's not saying *I* will win; how would Hinata win a team sport by himself? It's a key concept throughout the series that Hinata is supported by the Karasuno members and he is grateful for the fact that they can cover him wherever he lacks, too.

About Hinata's speech, it is a translation mistake, in the official version of the manga in Spanish (which is my language) he speaks "we" and in the Spanish subtitle of that version it is also "we"

Great reaction as always! I love Haikyuu as losers are also important! 5:33 Hinata didn’t say "I'M (gonna win)" actually. He only said "gonna win" since the subject is generally omitted in oral Japanese conversation. Thus, I think it should have been translated "we are gonna win". 28:11 Sarah is right. Kiyoko didn't say "Tanaka looks good with a banana" . She just said "Banana fits Tanaka", and it always means he looked like a monkey😂

@ talosig23 I think the average high school boy with that level of energy and awkwardness, it’s a normal bow for them. First of all a 90 degree bow is the most respective bow out of the three angles (15,30,90) and so that angle shows their utmost respect to the senpai. And as a normal high school boy it’s common to have your hands crossed in the back when listening to someone cause what else to do with your hands😅 Most kids either have it crossed in the front or back, fumble their fingers, stick it in the pocket, everything besides just letting it hang loose on your side lol So with all that plus the emotion of frustration of loosing and thankfulness to the senpai, that hard deep bow with hands behind their back seemed very high school boys for me☺️

Talking about being tall in high school is hilarious because while I topped out at 6'3" (Both Adam and Sarah are at least 2 inches taller than I am) I was only 5'5" until my Freshman year. I went from 5'5" to 6'1" in a summer. I also don't have a basketball/volleyball build. Much less lean and much more brick shaped. Haha.

She is still a legend but growing up it was wild. Everyone knew who she was. Plus she wasn’t only tall she was as very skilled. Fun fact, she was a setter for our countries junior national team.

I hope they actually read the comments. I feel like they've skipped the comments for the last 2-3 episodes and it bothers me in an irrational way simply because I enjoy the "conversations" that happen through their videos

I read the comments every week. The issue with this last set of videos is that we recorded a whole bunch in one week because we have been traveling for tournaments. So while we have not been talking about them, we have been reading them.

If you are Japanese and have 178 cm (average height of a Canadian), I think people around you will say you are tall. I've never seen a person of 200 cm in my daily life, so I'm sure you'll be surprised when you see Hyakuzawa-kun.😂 Is Mr. Adam also tall?

People get so caught up about Kiyoko's banana comment "not being intended that way" but like, the writers/animators made a distinct point of having her say that line, with that framing, and that expression, never having had a similar type of moment with any other character, what else could all of that possibly add up to??? Mistranslation or not, every other aspect of that story beat is an explicit admission lol.

The amount of reactors who immediately think the banana line is something sexual is honestly staggering. Is it how it is in western culture? And honestly, that translation didn't help.
