At 32:00 , to explain it in case you guys didnt catch it, there are many ways to address yourself in Japanese. ‘watashi' when used informally(with friends) is usually perceived as being feminine. He (or ig she) follows it up with 'watakushi' which is an extremely polite version of watashi hence not suitable to use between friends. 'boku' and 'ore' are typically used by men, however, 'ore' sounds more rough and hence is more suitable to be used informally. Thats why he was getting weird looks from his friends at that part as since he always uses the informal and masculine 'ore', it's weird for him to use 'boku' and even weirder for him to use polite and more feminine terms with his friends.

So all the cultural aspects of things like the sake are accurate. You can make sake that way, but it's not generally sold, it's more of a ceremonial thing. Mitsuha does mention that making it herself would break the Liquor Tax Law, and that's because Japan's liquor tax laws are incredibly strict. Homebrewing is basically illegal, and it's incredibly hard to get a license as a small brewer. It used to be you had to make something like 2 million liters a year to get a license, but it has eased up in recent years. Also worth noting that it's easier to tell who is Mitsuha and who is Taki in Japanese, because Mitsuha has a pretty strong country dialect that is fairly distinctive and out of place in Tokyo. At 32:00 the exchange they have is about Mitsuha!Taki's personal pronouns, because the way you say "I" varies in Japanese depending on the context of the situation and your own identity. In order she uses: Watashi - Fairly common but a little on the formal and unfamiliar side, and also a bit more female-coded, but also sort of considered like the default. If you're talking to a stranger or someone you don't know very well, it's common to use this. But if you're among friends, it's more common for females to use it as their 1st person pronoun than males. Watakushi - She misunderstands their problem with her pronoun and immediately thinks, "Oh, I wasn't being respectful enough" so she switches to the humble 1st person pronoun, watakushi. This is what you say to a customer in a very formal situation, or someone above you that you're expected to be very respectful towards. Definitely not something to call yourself to your friends. Boku - Male-coded 1st person pronoun, usually younger males, fairly polite. It wouldn't be out of place for someone Taki's age to call himself Boku. But they're still like, "No, that's not how *you* refer to yourself." Ore - This is highly masculine, informal, impolite, rough, and kind of like what someone who thinks they're a little tough might say. Mitsuha is a little surprised that he calls himself "Ore", given that she's more respectful, polite, and proper. If I were to try to translate into English, imagine if she was talking about her friends, and her progression went from "Friends" to "Chums" to "Buddies" to "Bros".

I'm Japanese, but there are many old cultures and customs that remain in rural areas, especially in the western part of Japan, and I think the author chose to depict that.

A few things without spoilers: I love you guys experiencing, that animation isn't a genre--it's a medium. Anime in particular is viewed through such a specific lens in Western culture, and I cannot begin to tell y'all at this channel how much I appreciate the venture into these movies!! It's such a unique expression/art-form and deserves the appreciation that you have certainly given it. So in short, anime is the medium and it contains different genres. About the questions about the significance of the red hair ribbon, its symbolic. It's called the Red Thread of Fate. Here is a bit from wiki; "It is commonly thought of as an invisible red cord around the finger of those that are destined to meet one another in a certain situation as they are "their true love"." And yes, the cultural references are real. I’m no expert on the topic, and I’m sure someone will fill you in, but even if it’s not the same as regular sake, you can actually buy this traditional sake that is produced in the shown ceremony!

I always said this to people, especially those belittling or have a perceived notion of anime. That it is a medium, just like books are. Just like movies, series, and book, there are different genres and all of them has anything for kids and adults. With that being said, even western animation (that perceived by many as for kids too) can have also some that are for adults

Man, I remember seeing this movie, I assumed it was one of these typical boring romance movies, but then I decided to actual gave it a chance and was amazed by the amount of symbolism, and taught me the importance of love.

Sarah and Adam's reaction video and I think the love story goes well together. I can get very emotional too. Enjoy the animation during the holiday season. kuchi-kami-zake was made in ancient times, at least 1,000 or 2,000 years ago. Nowadays, it is safe to drink it because it is made from yeast under strict hygienic control. Some rituals have survived to modern times only in form, but they were not intended for sale. from japan.

The Red Ribbon ties into the heart of the entire film, so that explanation will wait until the end! The cultural aspects are absolutely dead on, so much so that Mitsuha and Yotsuha's Shinto dance is modeled after actual shine priestess' dances.

OPE, I had to edit my comment, I was writing it while watching and commenting some things that tie into later parts of the movie based on your questions. I removed them when I got to the very end and you said no spoilers! I'm so glad you guys watched this! I LOVE this movie, and it is so immaculately made. There are zero wasted scenes in it. There is a fantstic level of internal consistency and foreshadowing in the early parts of the movie that makes rewatching it really satisfying. Were they living in the shrine? Yes. There are families that still live in and maintain some shinto shrines to my knowledge, though it is much less common than it used to be. What's up with the recurring red cord? The "red strand of fate" is a common trope in Japanese storytelling, symbolizing to lovers tied together by fate. Adam is also right that it ties into the cords they were making in the previous scene. When Mitsuha screams about wanting to be a boy in Tokyo, she does so standing in the Torii Gate. These gates are found at the entrance of most shrines and symbolize crossing the boundary between the mundane and the sacred. Very fitting for the theme of the movie. Kuchikamizake (the sake from chewing rice) was a real thing, though I don't believe it's particularly done anymore. According to wikipedia, it was still used in some Shinto rituals through the 1930s. So it is perhaps a little bit of a stretch that it's still happening in this movie, but they ARE in the boonies as they say. Looking forward to parts 2 and 3, and Merry Christmas!

Your Name was what first introduced me to the band Radwimps, they're the ones doing all the music in this film, as well as the other Makoto Shinkai (the director)'s films. This one is so incredibly beautiful in it's storytelling, its visuals, it still makes me emotional whenever I hear any of the songs from the soundtrack. I also had the privilege to see the band live a few months ago and I pretty much almost cried when they started playing the title song from here 😅 After this I really hope you both would consider reacting to Suzume which is the latest Makoto Shinkai film. That one was also incredibly gorgeous and knocked the wind out of me when i watched it

Hi Sarah, Hi Adam. The director for this film Makoto Shinkai is my all time favourite filmmaker and has a body of work stretching over 20 years. I really hope you end up enjoying the whole of Your Name and maybe even watch some of his other films too. If there is a wandering Shinkai fan who finds this comment and might not be familiar with his work with video games, please check out the opening videos for ‘ef: a fairy tale of the two’. They are unbelievably well made for being made over 15 years ago.

One of my favorite Shinkai movies too! Did you know there is a reference to Garden of Words in this movie - in the shot of the restaurant that Taki works at, the name of the restaurant seen on the outside of the building is "il Giardino delle Parole" which is Italian for "The Garden of Words."

One of my favorite. The music and the visuals are just amazing. Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet but anime films tend to have a higher budget than regular anime tv shows, so the animation and visuals are absolutely top notch. Also, I hope this gets Sarah more interested in the romance genre of anime because there’s a ton of great romance anime out there.

I am sure others already answered your questions, so I only have one hope, that you also like the animation! The sceneries in this movie are out of this world! This story was made by SHINKAI MAKOTO, who works under (or who is a student kindof?) Miyazaki. He is called the next Miyazaki to be honest, I see a lot of reference to this, this is how good are these movies, that he made, and we all hope, this is just the beginning. 31:18 "I'd be a little more freaked out, never being in a big city before" Japanese culture has a different attitude toward children's independence than US. There were only 853 murders in Japan in 2022, versus 21,500 in the US. Unlike American helicopter parents, Japanese parents encourage their children to go on trips alone. In Japan, thousands of kids as young as 6 take the train by themselves into Tokyo to school every day, changing trains at Shinjuku, the busiest train station in the world: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JD6razeczwY.html We in the US used to allow kids to learn self reliance too, in the good old days before the NRA, the Republican party and Smith & Wesson turned our country into a shooting range.

1:14 I don’t think anyone can blame you for the pronunciation, a lot of people get confused by it. Studio Ghibli is pronounced with a soft G (written in Japanese as ジブリ - which is jiburi). But the studio itself is named after a wind in the Sahara, which is an Arabic word pronounced with a hard G (which is why there is an H in the spelling). So anyone wanting to be enough of a pedant could really argue for either if they wanted to.
