Fun fact: When Tsukishima calls Hinata a "simpleton", the Japanese word he uses is "tansaibou" which actually means "single-celled organism" lol That makes it so much meaner and funnier
Hinata would be able to chat and make friends with anybody, and he talks to Yachi because that's how he is, not because he thinks Yachi's cute. The only one who thinks that Yachi's cute is Yamaguchi.
@@lesfest It's something like that. Of course is a word-play about Hinata's name meaning Sun, but it also means how it overwhelms when you see directly at the sun. Yachi feels overwhelmed at Hinata's passion for what he does, something she could never relate to, so talking with her perfect opposite feels like if you were watching directly at sunlight.
When Yachi calls Hinata short, you guys crack me up. Sarah asking, "Why would you even think they're attracted to her, they've said nothing like that?" Adam's face, "... because they're boys!?" Can confirm, that's how it used to work.
Yeah Adam has a better feel for that than Sarah does lol. Yamaguchi calls her cute, Tanaka and Nishinoya stare at her. It's really not much of a secret. Turns out teenage boys find cute girls attractive.
Omg, yes! The only thing our dumbass small brains knew were "new girl showed up, i like girls". Hahaha that was basically it. We're idiots at that age :P
5:49 I'm sure Sarah was the type who couldn't let herself get a bad grade on a test. And Adam sounds like the guy who was bad at school and now became a wise old man with time LMAO
2:56 I graduated from public high school in Japan. As for my experience, my school set failing score at 30 out of 100 each. Usually avg score lays between 60-70 so you always find a few people failed exam😅 My school also required them take both supplementaly lessons and exam until you passed. Therefore haikyu is pretty accurate in that regard, i think.
@@SarahPavanVolleyballWhen I was in high school in the US, if you got 60-70% in a class in high school it meant you were putting in basically no effort. The fact that the average scores were apparently 60-70% in his Japanese high school tells me that their exams are much harder. You'd probably have to go above and beyond to get 90%+ in their classes, meanwhile my high school had 93% be the cutoff for A's and getting those A's weren't too difficult (outside of trying to get somebody who absolutely does not want to go to school to actually do their work).
naoka3298,@SarahPavanVolleyball Yup, sounds about right. I went to Japanese public schools from middle school through high school. The failing score was 30/100 and the average was usually anywhere from 50-70 depending on the school, subject, teacher, etc. For me, since middle school is still mandatory education, teachers can’t make the tests too difficult cause in Japan there is no such thing as flunking and redoing a year from grade 1-8. So someone who made sure to pay attention in class and do homeworks could get an easy average of 60-80 and to get the failing score of 30 you really had to be bad at academics. For high school though, since I went to a bit more prestigious school the teachers made our tests quite hard and even put simple college level questions in our tests. So the average could be anywhere from 40-70 and depending on the subject or teachers it was no surprise to have numerous students with failing score of 30. And almost 100% of the time teachers will do additional classes after school or on weekends for us failed students and give us multiple chances to redo tests till we pass.
I would like to thank Adam for being the first person I've seen react to this show who seems to remember what puberty was like. As someone who got his growth spurt in 6th grade and started growing facial hair around the same time, I kinda take it personally when people treat characters like Asahi and Ushiwaka like they have to be in their thirties.
Middle school is so chaotic, when I look back I don’t blame myself for feeling constantly insecure back then. Getting used to your body as it quickly changes is tough, esp since everyone‘s experience with puberty is unique
Oh Yachi, always overthinking way too much and then quickly realizing that all the chaos in her mind was just panic riddled nonsense, hahahhaha love her
@28:30 It is at this moment that Yachi's social battery gets drained by Hinata's high social energy. It's natural for an introvert to get exhausted like that--it's like walking for a long time under the intense and direct heat of the sun. 😁
Yachi's such a lovely addition to the cast! The author wanted to introduce a character not as strong-willed as most of the main cast, but it they also had to avoid making her too servile/timid; they were worried she'd get disliked by the fans. And I'm glad you're enjoying the slower beginning of the season! The previous match against Seijou took longer than Furudate expected, and they felt like the readers had enough volleyball for now, hence more slice of life content. Regarding Yachi's words about the sun: correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it much of a cultural context there. I also understood the comparison immediately much like Sarah. But Adam is right that the Japanese (and Asians in general from what I heard) are very careful about the sun, and for a good reason too - it's so easy to get absolutely fried in summer here. Deadly laser indeed
This makes laugh in every episode: Adam: "Sarah, tell me some spoilers." Sarah: "No, I'm not saying anything. Do the work yourself and watch the show."
The second years going over reading comprehension problems give me strong dejavu when Sarah fiercely paused the video and asked Adam 'what do you think she is up to','what do you think it is'
I guess Sarah has better academic performance in school 😂 I think Adam would devote anything to the things he valued but feel free to be an average in things he doesn't very care. But for Sarah,I think she is just so competitive that she didn't want to lose to anybody even for a little math test😂
I love Yachi so much it felt like we got to see more of her character in one episode than kiyoko‘s in the entirety of season 1. Her interactions are so endearing and I can’t wait to see adam‘s reactions of her important scenes in the future.
One thing they do very well is subtly show the class difference between Karasuno and the Tokyo teams. For example, Kenma has a smartphone and Hinata has an older flip phone. They don't make it overt, but if you pay attention you can see it.
@@adamschulz9475 You see it in other ways too! Kenma lives in Tokyo and goes to a private school that regularly goes to Nationals, meanwhile Karasuno is way out in the country and didn't have a coach after the old one retired. It's clear there's a class difference there. You also see it in the Shiratorizawa episode, with how decked out the school (literally horse riding) with its own private volleyball bus and everything. It's the most expensive private school in the district with the maximum resources where only the "best" go. Finally, Hinata himself - he literally lives on a mountain, has a 30 minute bikeride to school, and went to a middle school that did not have a volleyball club. In contrast, people like Kageyama or Nishinoya clearly have been playing volleyball from childhood. It's safe to say Hinata is probably not as well off as even his classmates.
With the academic question, I really think Sarah would be one of those students who study reaaally hard till she memorizes almost everything, Adam seems to me one of those who just remember few but important logic rules and then end answering almost everything right
That's a good explanation Sarah!! My interpretation of the direct sunlight reference is when you got exposed to someone extremely bright, extroverted, a timid introverted person feels drained
Adam is definitely right. It's more of a cultural saying in Asia. You absolutely do not say "I'm so tired I feel like I've been out in the sun for too long" here in the States. While I'm not Japanese, I am Korean American, and my mom is definitely more conscious about skin care and direct sunlight on skin, so he's also right about that. That being said, Sarah definitely got better grades. Think i remember reading Sarah got a 4.0 in college, which I could see. Definitely seemed like a diligent student. Adam I could see being smart, but would blow off studying to rip bongs and drink some brews with the bois
I think when Yachi met the team it was the first and second years who thought she was cute. The others focused on Kiyoko caring about the team and Asahi tried to be friendly (and failed, since he is "a man with a full set of shoulders and facial hair" as Adam put it, lol)
30/100 is passing for most of Japanese schools. 60-70% is around above average because of the relative difficulty in the tests. Correct me if I’m wrong of course.
@@panjipewe yup, Volleyball and Football are probably the most important sports for Brazilians. But Brazil's volleyball team was legendary for a long time from what I remember. I'm honestly not up to date on what they are like these days.
20:30 I can attest to that. Every year in my local basketball league during highschool, there's always a guy who looked like the village elder with all those facial hair going on lmao.
@@adamschulz9475 I remember a parent protested one of those players because they clearly do not look like highschool boys. We've learned that a couple of those guys intentionally fluked school 3 years in a row so they could keep playing in the highschool league lmao. I remember everyone was floored🤣😂
the being in the sun comment is kinda like when you hang out with someone with a lot of energy and they sap yours too. I get that a lot from being an introvert. That plus, hi- in hinata is sun so it is also a pun
Obsessed with Yachi's perspective. It helped me to re-remember my own love of volleyball! I was cut from the team in HS and largely fell off, but seeing a newcomer's excitement made me remember how amazing it was!
Direct Sunlight - Villager B are a special pair of episodes that displays how well Haikyuu ties comedy and character development together. There is meaning in serious characters telling jokes and showcasing physical comedy, James Gunn gets it, Joss Whedon kind of gets it, nobody else at Marvel seem to get it. The payoff in the next episode is why Haikyuu is pure literary genius.
Sarah definitely did really well in school! I looked at her wiki and also watching your anime channel, Sarah was mentioned to being a biochemist! So rad! Sarah, is that something you are going to pursue in the future?
Normally I'm a 'Glasses girl is best girl' kinda guy... But best girl has arrived. *Edit: I take it back. Best girl hasn't arrived. Our Taiko girl is actual best girl. It's been a while I spaced on her for a second.* *Edit again: I posted too soon. She IS in this episode.*
I adore Yachi, and she's going to have so many great moments through the series, but two of my favourites are in this episode: 1) that she is here in the first place because she was so distracted by Kiyoko's prettiness that she doesn't know what she's agreeing to (this would definitely have happened to me when I was 15) and 2) that incredible anxiety spiral from "should I know these people's names?" to "I'm going to have to sell my organs". About academics, my theory is that Sarah was either brilliant (because she'd take it as a personal challenge) or terrible (because completely focused on volleyball), where Adam would be more moderate.
Awww I can't wait for the next episode reaction. Probably one of the episodes that I can relate to as someone who is non-athletic but grew to love watching volleyball.
As a former teenage boy I'm gonna have to back Adams statement that Hinata probably thinks yachi is cute. Refining your preferences is something that comes with maturity.
I understand what Adam was saying when he talked about the sun comparison being a Japanese reference. I live in the south and even here I’ve never heard anyone explain being socially tired as being out in the sun all day. Now with that the saying makes a lot of sense to me because the sun is definitely draining after awhile so I agree it also straight up just makes sense, but I doubt many people use it as a way to describe being tired/socially tired in the US
This is why, Daicihi is call DAD-ichi and Suga is called Suga-mama. Also, I was the one that looked like a grown man against my peers. I hit 6'0" when I was around 16, i think, and I actually started working out at 14.... When other players met me, I was always mistaken as the coach. HAHAHAHAHA
I'm not sure about the Japanese grading system in schools (and I haven't looked it up either, so this is just my first thought), but when Hinata said he had never received a double digit score before (so single digits only) I instantly thought of the 1-15 grading system; - Most community high-schools / public high-schools around the world (be it Junior, Middle, or High) use either the 1-6 system (1 being the best score, 6 being the worst), or the A-F system (A being the best, F being the worst) - Most public high-schools only have class levels up to 10 though. So after the 10th grade, you graduate. - Some schools offer advanced education in high-schools though, usually referred to as "A-Levels" (A for Advanced), and that's where you have the 11th and 12th grade and graduate after. From my experience I know for a fact that A-Level schools use the 1-15 grading system (15 is the best grade you can get, and 1 the worst, 15 is an A+, 14 an A, 13 an A-, 12 is a B+, 11 a B, 10 a B-, 9 a C+, 8 a C, 7 a C-, etc.) So I think Japanese schools probably use this 1-15 grading system, and Hinata has only ever received scores from 1-9 on that scale (so a C+ at best). That's how I understood what Hinata said. PS: Universities usually use the 1-100% scoring system, and some high-schools apparently use this system too, but based on the dialog in Haikyuu they aren't using percentages for grades. There is no way Hinata got single digit scores all his life.
Here sports are so disregarded it barely ever had anything to do with school, you'd mostly join youth clubs or else outside the school system and rarely ever had make up exams/classes until the end of the year to give you one last chance to make it to the next grade so i never had that experience but I can only imagine how stressed I would have been if practicing my sports depended on how good i was doing academically since i was the type of person who was satisfied with just above or just under a passing grade (which is a 50%)
Adam's statement or assessment on how easier it is to watch the earlier season 2 excites me. coz he is saying how easy it is to appreciate the show more since you dont have this overwhelming thing to keep track of whos who and whats what. so it excites me to the time when they will rewatch the whole show again. Adams second and sarahs third that is a looooong way though
Yes, Yachi finally appears! I was waiting for Adam reaction! Btw, Sarah, you're coming to Guadalajara (and Tepic), any chance for a mexican meet and greet? 🇲🇽
I would put my money on Sarah doing better in school for 3 reasons: 1) Girls get better grades on average than boys in modern schools. 2) Husband-of-the-channel is much more laid back, and speaking from experience, that can lead to not caring about grades so much. 3) From hearing Sarah speak about her dad, there's no way he let her get away with Cs and probably not with many Bs.
Well, we know Sarah has a great memory and, if mine is correct, she told us that she was a good student. So, I'm with her... Sorry Adam. Yaaay, females characters! The asistant and Tanaka's sister. :) I know is manga anime about a boys team and voleyball, but mangaka goes so good making them somewhat realistic that, to me, the romance part in adolescense... Is missed. Anyway, mangaka was so good in what he did that I forgive him for that a lot time ago. We have fanfics anyways :)
I wonder if by "I never had a double digit" it was translated like that for countries that rate /20 since in that case having a double digit counts as half of the grade. Because not being able to have double digit/100 means never being able to get even 10% of the grade (so 2/20) and that seems way to low to be credible (especially considering they had good enough scores with entry exams)
Video Start: Adam had 2 awesome drafts Sarah!!!! You had 1 awesome and 1 very meh Ushijima's confidence is there for a reason Episode Start: The summer school and make up work is standard in the US too, you also in most schools need to maintain a certain grade average in order to participate in club activities Love seeing Ennoshita, and will continue to mention every time he shows up Tsuki telling them to try hard and study Ukai's "Do I look like I got good grades" is wonderful Hinata is so stupid, so much of an airhead Daichi being such a good captain, making sure the team gets the grades We know Suga and Daichi get good grades based on them being candidates for good schools as per the guidance staff wanting them to quit club for grades I can see Hinata getting more than a 10 Boot camp for the idiots Hinata coming up with asking Tsuki is great, as is Kageyama's initial reaction I agree with Yamagucci, you would think Kageyama would be smart Tsuki trolling them asking is amazing and I love it Hinata so awkward Hinata needing to slow down in school is so perfect for his character I love how all the characters have a reason or practice that hurts their grades, its not just "bad at school" its thought out and real issues that students have Ennoshita helping the dumb 2nd years study is so awesome (yes I know Narita and Kinoshita are there too) Tanaka's sister is amazing we love her, great energy Ennoshita-sensei!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, the 1st years are working on like what would be foreign language 1 (English) and native language 1 (Japanese), whereas the 2nd years are doing their more advanced grade level native language (Japanese) Love Kenma and Hinata emailing each other Hinata's little sister is adorable Takeda as the teaching caring that they actually get decent grades is something I love to see from adults in youth sport media Yachi so stiff No Adam, everybody thinks Shimizu Kiyoko is pretty, because she is f-ing gorgeous Everybody thinking Asahi is old I would worship her too Ukai does look like a bad boy I totally feel Adam in boys sports, girls even out sooner and start sooner, guys start later and its wild I love Tsukishima keeping the boys to a schedule, they better be paying him if they want overtime Yachi 100% needs help with that anxiety, it is very cute and funny though "Teach me this english" I love how in sync no prompting they tell Yachi 100% she does not need to worry about being less nice than Tsukki Kageyama saying the libero is good and then the look of interest on Adam's face is amazing Yachi feeling bad about it right away is so cute They did blush faces on Yamagucci and Hinata I totally get and agree with Adam, also she didn't know that yet Hinata's god damn crazy eyes Love Yachi saying how teaching them helps her study, 100% my most productive form of learning something is needing to teach others Yachi the introvert, wilting from the sheer level of extrovert social energy from Hinata Yes Sarah!!! Hinata is the sun she wilted in, I didn't think of that and it fits perfectly with what I just said. Thank you See, I think maybe the under 10% was accurate is he is so proud of a 30%, but idk how their schools work in japan Great save Hinata Kiyoko giving Yachi the tldr Karasuno download Episode End: I really can't wait to see the next one, I love episode 3 We don't really know how long has past, they never tell us. I think its been a few weeks. Video End:
I am 5'8 and was considered tall when I was in HS. I got asked if I played basketball and/or volleyball. But after hearing this, I am whimpering in the corner.
Hey, there's a missing part. When Shimizu was looking for a new manager on the 1st years floor, that's why Hinata was helping her later. It''s a very nice scene between Shimizu & Hinata. Too bad
Is Sarah and Adam's audio a little bit ahead of the show? Some of their reaction is a tiny bit ahead of the actual subtitle. Not that I'm complaining, but I didn't notice that before.
LOL Sarah saying that Kiyoko is out of all the Karasuno players leagues... Sarah you need you read the manga and then revisit that comment haha. (I mean that in a funny/sarcastic way, not condescending lol)
Can i ask? Why is your voice heard in haikyuu, but not in demon slayer? It was very uncomfortable. If you're avoiding copyright, why don't you turn down the anime voices instead of their voices? I always wait for haikyuu videos every week and on your second channel, it's a shame the demon slayer videos aren't as good as here. Sorry if I said harshly
Sarah had the better grades cuz I think I read somewhere she got a degree in biology with a perfect gpa or something Even though I'm pretty sure people would vote Adam because misogyny is a big bias n all
Interesting that you bring up misogyny (not coming after you or anything!) Based on my own gender bias, I would 100% bet on Sarah being the better student. I'd always bet on women/girls getting good grades in comparison. I'm a dude. I didn't do well in school 😂
