In this video I am testing the pocket multimeters by applying transient voltages to their inputs (generated with a Brymen 887 Insulation meter) and we’re also going to talk a bit about CAT ratings and what they mean.

Thanks for making an attempt at testing these. Dave made a few videos with an insulation tester as well on a handheld meter and showed the switch breaking down. In his older videos, he was using the AC wall outlet for his resistance test. This last one he mentions some reference source. Consider that your Brymen is a DC source, if it had unlimited current available and you switched the meters to their resistance modes, I suspect you would damage a few. I've had them fail much lower. Good luck with your testing.

Here is my attempt at putting 1KV DC into the meter's clamp circuits. Not something I recommend anyone try and repeat.

that brymen887 meter is badass, can't wait for your review.

I would like that in my arsenal, I currently have that bulky fluke 1520 megohmeter but it works beautifully.

Hi seams we have pocket DMM week. Australia is first in the timezone.

I liked how Dave had much more pocket meters than I had(bigger budget). However I didn't like the fact he had some older revision of the brymen and couldn't show it's full potential.

VoltLog Thanks. Have not a single one. So its excellent that you share your collection and test them.

He should have added more tests, actually he should have tested them all. Me personally I don't care about high voltage with a small pocket meter, 300V will do. If I use a meter for higher voltage I want nice probes and a more heftier meter for mechanical stability. But why no tests about speed with these auto-range devices . The old pocket meter that I have and adore is a big failure in that part. Trying to measure a resistor will set you back 5 seconds or so before you have the actual reading. Really strange that the Brymen was not that good as I do like these meters a lot.

In eevblog's video, he actually had the older model for the brymen, not the newer one with "s" like I had in my video. I tested by twisting the case like Dave did and I do not have that problem on my units. If he would have had the newer BM22S for test with a carry case like I had and if he would have considered the price which is in the $30 range I'm sure it would have been in top 3.

You can also generate some transients with a spark generator.

Sorry for my ignorance but what are transient voltages? I thought voltage was pressure or potential difference? What is the difference between a standard voltage and a transient voltage? Thanks in advance for any replies. Edit: Google defines transient as short term. How short should the voltage spikes be with regard to these meters?
@voltlog
@voltlog 6 лет назад
yes transient is defined by the short length and potentially higher value, however in my test the length was for how long I would keep the button pressed.

Hello, I think you should check both polarities

1000V on AC and DC, but only 4-15V on the other ranges. The insulation tester cannot deliver 1000V on ranges with low impedance.

Henrik Jensen Very true, this test is giving a bit of a wrong picture.
@voltlog
@voltlog 6 лет назад
Indeed the insulation tester cannot deliver 1KV into the low impedance encountered on the ohms range input. However as explained in the video this instrument is the only one I had access to that would go that high in voltage, it's far from ideal test conditions. and I did not claim that this is the proper way to do transient voltage testing.
@henrikjensen3278
@henrikjensen3278 6 лет назад
It was only in the 4-15V range, i.e. no transient like test
@henrikjensen3278
@henrikjensen3278 6 лет назад
It depends on the energy, on most meters today is a small PTC in series with the ohm range and after that some clamping. On cheap meters it can often handle up to 250V. This also means the input impedance is in the 1-3kOhm range when the clamp is turned on and until the PTC warms up.

Mai, you may not think you were using high voltage power supplies but sound like you made a nice open loop boost converter.

The real danger is the transient that breaks circuit or starts arching. After arc has been triggered, high power from the voltage source and makes a large bang when lower voltage at high current arcs using the plasma made originally from transient arc. Unfortunately that needs a transient source or other equipment typical hobby lab does not have. Stuff like pure insulation testing is much easier when you get by with just about any high voltage source. I've used components like isolation transformers and neon transformers for insulation testing in my hobby lab. Transient testing needs method to add the high voltage momentarily. Simple insulation testing is sometimes specified for longer test time and can be done by simply connecting high voltage for a couple seconds or so. Any testing with a true high voltage source can be very dangerous if you're not familiar with working with high voltage. It needs much more care than low voltage mains that can still kill you.

You should do a collaboration with Joe Smith, he loves to blow up multimeters (and has a crazy lab full of gear).

not sure if pocket multimeters are his thing but he can sure blow them up with the transient generator he has :-)

I was thoroughly impressed by one of his older videos, where he casually mentions designing a wire-wrapped ISA FPGA dev board from scratch using thousands of dollars worth of parts... so he could design his on CPUs, just for fun. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C8txvmXUIJQ.htmlm10s

funny how dave jone claims he killed the aneng meter with 240V at ohms range but did not verify its actually dead but this video clearly shows its throwing 1000V yet the meter is still functioning perfectly.
@javierpallalorden
@javierpallalorden 6 лет назад
Reesey Me This 1000V is only achievable on high impedance circuits. 220V from the household outlet is very different. This test is actually not saying much at all. Voltlog should talk to Joe Smith.

It was strange how the aneng failed so fast in Dave's test, he probably had a more capable HV power supply that pushed more energy into the device under test.

Javier, talking to Joe Smith would not help. I would still be using the equipment I have available in my lab and to the best of my knowledge. I appreciate feedback so please suggest a way I could use the BM887 to test these pocket multimeters better than what I already showed in the video.

I may try to reproduce this test for fun using a bit more power... 1KV DC with some high current, what could go wrong?
