It's the squared 80s shape we all recognise, but how will the retro Volvo hold up in a modern world? Tony goes for a spin to find out if it's still hip to be square. Follow us now! insta - @carsoulig @tonyisnttony
What a fantastic video! Your comment about them going extinct was so on point! Keep up the quality content, I think your channel is going to do very well 👍
Loved world-wide alright! 1990 Volvo 740 New Zealand owner here 🇳🇿. 740s etc are quite hard to come across here. & people here either understand the love for Volvos or they look at you like you're completely crazy , I love it 😍 Appreciate this video a lot, straight to the point and well put together. Especially the never reaching zero part! They need to not go extinct world-wide
I own a 1988 Volvo 745 GLE with 4-speed and overdrive. Owned this car for 20 years by now and I will never sell it. The car got sunroof, electric windows and cruise control and everything works even the fuel gauge works after I repaired it.
Great video. The 700 series has mostly been overshadowed by the 200 because the latter has (had) the edge when it comes to that ironic autumnal history teacher chic. I love my navy 740 GL and just need a fuel pump to get it back on the road. Two cars have crashed into it in the past, writing themselves off in the process. Comfortable, roomy, yes. But also, it handles really nicely. It's really precise, predictable and you always know where the limit is.
There's still huge love for these, made a group about them a couple years ago now for a booming success, over 2k members and predominantly rwd, it's a play on the us turbo bricks, fastbricks. Some are fast some aren't but if you fancy getting into one definitely grab one they're reliable once you've given them the service they desire and don't really rust compared to say a sierra. Great video doing the car's justice, only note is pre 88 didn't come galvanized so watch out for areas direct to salt but still rare to get a very rotten one. Front floors, bits around the bulkhead to inner arch and battery tray are the key points and that's about it.
This was fantastic man! Loved everything from the various angle of raw footage to 80s electronic music cut in between to the in-car interview and VO narration and going back in time with you retrospectively appreciating this classic …from an 89’ 740 GL Wagon owner….this was hilarious and insightful and too much fun…LOVED THIS!! Keep up the great work man! 👏😎
I didnt even notice this video was from a channel with only 210 subscribers o: Very nice work on this video, keep going like this and this channel will grow, You have the quality content!
I liked driving my father's 740 estate. The manual gear stick was made of solid steel and felt like it could last for over a million miles. The steering lock was very good and it was a reliable car. I like the look of it now even more than I did back then. Great video. Thank you very much.
Great cars, no doubt! The 940 were a little better, both better than the cult 240. All better than what followed, sadly. But it goes to prove that making a car that lasts forever will put you out of business.
We had a 'signal red' manual 740GL estate, E485TUM reg, from 1990 to 2012. I'd loved to have kept it, but my 940 CD 2.3LPT has been similarly reliable and with the extra power, helps keep up with today's traffic. Amazingly I've been lucky to have had classy black interiors including the seating and it's the perfect place to be for hours at a time.
The 940s do have a very similar if slightly more modern feel, I understand the upgrade. The great thing about the 740 is you can go even more classic with a 240, or more modern with a 940. Either way you’re getting a great Volvo experience
I remember seeing this exact car forsale on facebook for £500 last summer, missed out on it as it sold within house! it then popped up about 2 months later again for £1850! Not sure what it eventually sold for but didnt seem any work had been done to it
Cars can jump in price as they start getting that classic status. and you'll find a lot can go on underneath as each person does there bit to keep them going!
The best thing that Volvo has are the red block engines that could go around a million miles with the proper maintenance there were different options 740,GL,GLE, Turbo, Diesel, Turbodiesel,760,GL,GLE, Turbo diesel Turbo Plus
@@CarSoul they had a diesel,740 Turbo diesel, They were not so popular in the USA, but in other parts of the country they were very popular, of course you could order one just like the 240 series they also have a diesel.
Hi Thanks, I have one 1986 D reg estate in white. I bought Her at a reasonable price, but also because when | was checking Her out all that I could find wrong was that the original cassette player didn't auto reverse!! ; - )
Loved the 6 cyl turbo diesels in the Uk..especially the later ones. Power and economy in a big car. 760 Td the pick of the bunch. Pity they're all gone now.
I bought a 1990 740 here in Canada about 1.5 years ago and love it. Great running car but with age it does need a little tlc. Not many 740 on the road here in, and very few in scrap yards for parts.
@@CarSoul I heard of a volvo grave yard here in Ontario where a fellow has only volvos there. He won't sell any of them from what I hear. I think he had a volvo dealership a one time.
I also own a '90 740 GL and live in Canada. I haven't seen a 740 in a scrap yard in my area for many years. When I need parts I generally go with new - Volvo of Toronto, FCP Euro or RockAuto. I have dealt with Chapman Motors in B.C. or Voluparts in Georgia. But when you figure in the cost of shipping it is sometimes more economical to go with new. ie: Chapman's wanted $70 for a used fender liner that I could buy new from V of T for $57! Plus V of T offered free shipping. Always best to shop around for your parts.
4:35 Fun fact: You could buy a little plastic container to put on the little "shelf" :D We call them "pennfack" in swedish which translates to "pen storage".
Lovely review, but one thing, it stodd GL on the back, but with B230e, plush seats and the black stripes it is GLE. i know it exist GL/E but they have b230f
Don’t know if it’s said already but the “cliff” on the dashboard, has an accessoires you can put on there.. but your reviewing a very basic 740.. so it’s obviously not there
I hope not, merging on to the highway with a short ramp was only slightly safer than Russian Roulette. Hated the 92 we had growing up black on black, na, auto. If the yellow jacket was going extinct I wouldn't miss them either.
I used to have the exact same car as the one in the video (740 wagon, 5 speed manual, white wagon & blue interior !) and it did get 30 mpg so perhaps something is wrong ?
