We're at the Everything Electric Show 2024 in London test driving the Volvo EX30, the new compact EV which is very attractive both on spec and on looks. It's also supposed to be the most eco-friendly Volvo has produced so far. We somewhat dismissed it as a candidate for our next car because it's too tight on the back seats but this is the opportunity to give it another chance, and check out how it feels to drive and live in.

I find distance/kwh is much more usable. Battery capacity is in kwh so it's much easier to estimate range and charge rates are at kwh so again makes it trivial to estimate how much range you'll get at e.g. a 7kw charger x 1hr x efficiency = range.

True. Miles per kWh is more like a 'range efficiency' comparator (30% more means 30% more range on same capacity) vs Wh/km is more a like for like 'energy efficiency' comparator (30% more Wh/km means 30% more energy hungry)

I guess you'd get better with easily finding the functions you want. Its an android system right so you'll be able to customise the position of the icons to where you want them I'm sure. But the inefficiencies is poor, was it a dual Motor version? Excellent video as ever

Thanks. You're quite right on the interface. While I forgot to double check, I believe the car is registered for 268hp which points to Single Motor extended range (bigger battery is clear given dashboard display). To note the Double Motor is supposed to have only slightly worse efficiency in the city (c. 5Wh/km).

Drove this and the #3 at the same event. I noticed a massive difference in background/road noise in favour of the #3 (Premium, not Brabus)

Interesting, overall #3 felt cosier but i dont particularly recall noticing a difference in noise.

I agree, I've also tried the EX30. Tall person in the back seat is no real option. It's a pitty for a nice EV in many other aspects.

Coming other Volvo cars for that. EX30 is built to be the smallest suv becouse 90% want a suv and 85% of normal people drive alone or with a partner. Car will also be perfect when have kids. Will work fina u til kids is like 15 years old or older. My kids are 8 and 10 and the car was perfect when test drived it with my wife. Not many people drive car with grown people in the back.

For a family the Car of the Year Scenic is a much better choice. Not to mention the KIA EV6. It's terrible unsafe how you're fiddling about while driving.

You do realise that other than messing around trying to work out the consumption (which you wouldn’t do while driving) everything else he is doing can easily be done using the voice control. I’ve just done a 4hr round trip to London in day, night, dry, rain and I touched the centre screen all of bout four times!

It’s not without its quirks but all of the noise about no instrument binnacle and no buttons is a complete red herring. Live with the car for a couple of weeks and you’ll forget you ever had these. My biggest bug bear is the attention monitor that beeps at you if you don’t look straight ahead. It can be switched off but has to be done each time and it’s three menus down. It’s far too sensitive and doesn’t understand the concept of looking right in the UK as you approach a roundabout. Would be great if they could add the option to deactivate to the easy access car home page where the other driver aids are situated.
