Man you guys are awesome doing multiple P2 in depth videos! I got a v70r and an xc90 and you guys make me want to keep them alive as long as possible! Keep up the awesome work!
Thank you for this incredibly informative video, FCP Euro. I’ve got a 2008 XC90 V8 and I’ve got the notorious “AWD Disabled, Service Required” message on my dash display. Dealership wants me to purchase a new Control Unit (36001160), oil pump kit (30783079), and sealing kit (8675238). They want $5,000 for parts and labor which is ridiculous! So I’ll be going through and checking some of these things that you’ve mentioned such as fuse 23, the DEM, AOC, and control module. Thank you as always for the incredibly informative videos! Hope my car has AWD again soon. 😆
Happy to help KS_2015! Let us know what youre able to find out while diagnosing, hopefully you find the smoking gun of an issue! Thats a whole lot of money to throw some parts at a problem without knowing for sure what it is.
Re changing the auto gearbox fluid. You MUST use a good (ideally Volvo Vida) computer to go into the TCM and reset the fluid counter (so the car knows it's got new fluid as over time the gearbox compensates for aging fluid). Also, while in the TCM, reset learnt adaptions. This also helps the gearbox relearn how to operate on new fluid.
Wish i could find someone in Melbourne (Australia) who can explain like you do, nevertheless at least you guide me on my maintenance as well as supply parts at good prices.
love the video buddy but i do have a small gripe about it.....Anybody that watches these information videos is here for the information not the distracting and annoyingly repetitive music, in my humble opinon.🙂
This is a very informative video overall like it, my issue is I don’t believe changing trans oils after 150k (when it has never had one) is wise I’m running 280k never had a trams oil change hate it but I wouldn’t risk it as data and transmission specialist don’t advise that from the days I gathered. I’d love to see electronic malfunctions on P2 might not be that popular but one to be informative since these vehicles are highly computerized. My radio lights won’t work and I’d like to know how this system works and how it’s all wired it’s funky how the rear view mirror houses the alarm module and how they connected all together. Just a thought.
My 2005 XC70 (210k miles) has the same problem. No radio lights after the battery was reconnected (transmission selector would not go into P, so could not turn off the ignition completely which drained the battery). I have the same issue. Alarm battery needs to be replaced and so the sunroof will not open. 😕
Wait a minute. No filter for the fluid in the transmission? What is Volvo thinking? Transmission fluid (changing it) is the most overlooked maintenance item in a car.
my xc70 2004 321000 miles has rough shifting in 1-2 and delayed with clunk shift in 2-3 since 6 month and the fluid is white-ish brown, previous owner putted cheap oil 45000 miles before
Whats the diff between the AISIN fluid and the AOC fluid? Ive recently purchased a 04 XC70 and feel it shifts at odd times occasionally. Fluid is still reddish but im tempted to change it anyway. Anyone tell me if i need to do anything to the HALDEX or is changing the fluid adequate? Thanks
I have a P2 XC90 V8 i replaced ball joints, inner and outer tie rods, control arms and 4 alignments and still tends to go left or right when braking and it eats front tires like crazy.
The 3rd gear brake band that is actuated by the b4 solenoid often wears out of spec to the point of causing the shudder and then shift flares from 2nd into 3rd gear. The transmission will not shift promptly into 3 and will bang into 3 or 4 if the desired speeds are severely not matched or solenoids are slow. I’m about to see if I can replace the band in-car and then doing the tcm relearn after replacing old solenoids and seals.
Bro that sounds exactly like the s60 T5 I have, i have also noticed if i brake and slow the car down enough to were the gear i was in for example 4th is too high of a gear for the new lower speed am doing now the car will dip the clutch at sit and 1000 rpm untill i put my put on the throttle downshifting into 3 but it will bang into the downshift any outher rpm is not a problem it down shifts fine it's only when you slow down to really low rpm and the car dips the clutch it bang into the downshift.
Yep, it’s the band. If you replace it soon, it’ll keep the clutch sets from getting burnt out. I drive normally until the car’s warm and occasionally do the kickdown if I need to get ahead in traffic. When the transmission is warm, that’s when the hesitation and banging into 3 from 2 and sometimes shudder from 4 back into 3 happens. Sometimes I have to hold out 2nd gear until line pressure allows a smooth shift without relying too much on the worn brake band. Otherwise a well protected transmission.
Theodore, have you had any luck with that? Do you have to replace the solenoid? I have exact issues when the transmission warms up. While cold, it runs very well.
@@VolvoAddict The "P2" is the name of platform these cars have been built on. The S60 (98-06), V70(00-07), XC70(03-07), S80 (00-09) and XC90(02-14) were all built on the P2 platform. They share a lot of the same components, engines and transmissions. @sammybee The V40 is built on an entirely different platform, namely the Ford Global C platform.
Thank YOU for a well done video. I have a 2000 V70R..can anyone tell me which of these transmissions I have. I do not think it has a way to fill? It seems sealed. And I am having those hard shift and hope one of you knows the exact solution?? THANK YOU
@@lapaneton unfortunately, I couldn't buy it seeing the condition of the car... Top engine mount was charged with a unoriginal one, wheeling pump was leaking, suspension mounts were making strange noises... The performance was great, though.. but i understood that I would be good friends with the mechanic.. :) here in Turkey, everything about cars is expensive, so I couldn't risk my whole savings... in the us or EU people can buy these cars with one month salary, here it's 60-70 months...
And people were complaining about the wheeling feel of P2 Volvo's.. I think they have a point there. İt feels sluggish, doesn't make you feel confident on the road..
By any chance, can anyone tell what is the difference between volvo s80’s (2000-2007) automatic geartronic and non-geartronic (without those + and - shifts) and how can I tell if the variant I’m checking out has 5 or 4 gears or even ?6? Maybe?
Can someone please let me know if this will fix the same shift problem on the S60R? Every forum I've read and every video I've watched only bring up the standard S60 and not the R
I need to check the Haldex module , you say you can read 12 volts on the pins 1 and 2 , when ignition on, can anybody help me to find where pin 1 and 2 are located so i can get the test done?
Hi bro , i have a volvo c30 it showed messages transmission performance low and i changed the whole transmission last week , today i got the same message with the mew transmission when i turn off the car and on again it disappears but this hurts cuz i paid alot and shouldt have any problem any idea whats wrong ?
Normally, you should do that. In VIDA, there is an option to reset the transmission adaptations and also another one to perform an adaptation of the transmission. When performing the adaptation, you go on a drive and accelerate at certain RPMs so that the computer can learn the shift points. It makes it a lot smoother, especially on downshifts. If you don't have a DICE tool, the computer will relearn overtime but will shift poorly until it does, so I wouldn't recommend not doing the readaption process.
you'll want to apply 12v directly to the pump pins, if the pump kicks on then your problem is likely a broken angle gear collar sleeve or a bad module. If it doesn't, replace the pump and filter. Also inspect the Haldex control module for excess corrosion on the electrical connections, it is located on the Haldex unit attached in front of the rear differential.
I don’t have the time right now to watch the whole video but my p2 s60 transmition clanks when I put it in drive or reverse or park. And sometimes when I’m slowing below 10 mph and it downshifts. Do you have any idea on what I need to do to fix it?
Watch the video when you have time. It's either the valve body or the plates in the transmission. Start with the valve body and fluid, and progress from there.
Alsoo you can start by checking a simpler thing first: check the condition of the mount holding the transmission. If it's worn, or has too much play, consider changing it and seeing how it improves things.
Had the EXACTLY the same issues you mentioned. The fix was: change the sls, slt, slu transmission solenoids located on the valve body, do a full fluid flush, reset the computer adaptions with Vida. Had to open the transmission 2 more times after to adjust the solenoid pressure, reset the adaptions and for the ECU relearn procedure again each time. Cost about 150$.
Also what if the fluid has never been changed, you change the valve body, then the new solenoids would get worn fast.... but if you change the fluid, is there not a risk of slippage?
Here we are, at 289k (04 V70 2.4l, AW55-50), and the fluid hasn't been touched in over 200k miles, if not 250k. The fluid certainly isn't red.. but not too black yet. I have some of these symptoms, but if you drive gently and are careful about downshifts at -30 Fahrenheit it shifts. I inherited this car at 258k, and the whole time everyone (my father, mechanics, forums) says don't change the fluid as the problems will get worse, because of the clutch material in the fluid helping shifts and because it already been neglected so much. Any thoughts on this?
My 2006 Volvo S60 2.5t has just started not being able to find gears rarely and just started doing it would I be able to change the fluid or am I too late?
If the fluid level is low, try topping it up. If not, you can try replacing the fluid. If it doesn't get any better after that, you might be looking at a replacement transmission.
Hi, could you help me please with some info? I am fairly new to Volvo. Bought a 2002 V70 station wagon about 2 yrs ago. I did a complete flush of the transmission & car has zero issues with 160K miles on it now. This is a non turbo car. My question is this: being a front wheel drive, does it have differential fluid that needs draining and replacing ? if so, what do I use ? and is there a video with the location of the drain bolts ? Finally, how often am I suppose to flush the transmission fluid? I did a complete flush, not a drain. I used up 12 quarts to do a complete flush. Thank you.
No, your V70 does not have separate differential fluid. The differential for the front wheels is inside the gearbox and runs in the same oil as the gearbox.
@@dvdouden Ok, so that means I need to drain and change the gear box fluid then, correct ?? What does it use/what kind of gear oil and where is the drain plug ?? Do you have a video for this ?? Thank you.
@@AB-hx9hs gearbox, transmission, same thing. You only need to replace the transmission oil/fluid, the front differential is part of the transmission. Also be aware that there is no bolt for filling the transmission with new fluid. You'll need to fill it through the dipstick hole. There is a bolt that looks like it's plugging a fill port, but that's actually keeping a metal band in place. You wouldn't be the first person to undo that bolt and then lose 3rd or 4th gear completely and that's not something that can be fixed without taking the gearbox apart. The correct type of transmission fluid was mentioned in this video. There's a bunch of video's on RU-vid already with the correct procedure for replacing the transmission fluid.
@@dvdouden Yes thank you, that is what I thought, that it is only Transmission Fluid. I did the Flush when I bought the car 2 yrs ago and filled it through the dip stick and did the Flush not the drain. Took 12 Quarts of Fluid. Some forums people talk about the dealer resetting the transmission computer after the flush and the transmission now shifting like brand new. Is there such a thing as resetting the tranny computer on this car ?? My transmission shifts flawlessly so far. thanks so much.
Why would the Japanese design an Aisin gearbox without a filter! I'm considering a P3 XC70, but think I will hang on to my MB W124 230E, it's reliable and doesn't cost an arm and a leg to run.
Hi everyone!i have a volvo s90 d4 2017 with 8 speed automatic gearbox, and when i barely touch the gas pedal and the gearbox will change from 1 to second gear it feels like a small shock, like someone is pushing me on the seat but only at low rpm,on high rpm eveything normal!also when i need to brake hard for example from 40-50 mph to standstill when it downshifts from 3 to second and 1 gear it feels like a shock as well, like engine is moving from the top mounts,i do not know how to explain this exactly!the car had an oil change already but without gearbox adaptations reset yet!any opinions?thank you
Hi Florin, it may be a good idea to get the adaptations to reset if it was just serviced. In addition, you may want to inspect the mounts to ensure there isn't play coming from them!
@@fcpeuro thank you…i have not done the adaptations yet,i have checked the mounts and everything seems spot on!do i need any special tester/tool for gearbox values adaptations?
