I just re installed mine. Thanks for the very helpful videos. I'm Not a mechanic by any means but I did the whole job (removal and installation) following along with your videos.

Excellent video!! Word of advise. I have the same boat and removed the lower unit based on these videos. One thing that should be emphasized is how important it is to work on a flat level surface. Putting the lower unit back in has to be down at the PERFECT angle and if your boat or engine is on any kind of slant you will be fighting that as you replace the lower unit. As seen in the video a platform and shins are used to complete this.

I have used a engine picker and small straps choked under ujoint collar. It's a lot. Guiding the ujoint bellow, water hose and shift cable in place. But I love the AQ drives, every few years change bellows and every season the unit lube. As long as you don't hit anything they'll run for many years. Wish they still made them. The last 10 years I've bought many 275 and 280. I probably have 7 or more ready to go. To convert to outboard is just stupid expensive.

During my 25 or so years doing Volvo Penta AQ series work, I have never removed, nor installed, a complete AQ series stern drive. I suggest that we remove the transmission FIRST, and then re- install it LAST. (all new O-rings of course) With the transmission removed, it opens up the area for easier access to the shift cable bracket, the water neck fitting, easier to R&R the drive shaft bellows, etc. Doing it this way is much easier, and with much less weight to deal with, etc. Notice @ 1:51 into the video, Steve is attaching the shift cable bracket. Note how limited his access is. Had Steve done this while the transmission was removed, it would have been so much easier for him. (no offense Steve) If the Intermediate section and/or the main suspension fork must be removed, do so, but with the transmission having been removed prior. Like I suggested, my 25 years spent doing this has shown me that it's much easier to first remove the transmission only, then the rest if need be.

How far does the shaft go into the spline? Around 2-3cm? I have a 280 leg. I took off the upper gear housing and left the rest of the leg. It slide out easy when I took it off but now I am having difficulty putting it back in. The shaft only wants to go in like 0.5cm into the spline. I think the shaft is too big / wrong version and previous owner forced it in. Any ideas?

Thanks for an excellent video. It looked very easy for you to get the joint shaft into the right position at the shaft with splines. My experience is that it´s complicated a s the joint shaft will bend and it´s very small rooms for hands. Do you have any specific method/tricks to get it in pleace ?

Hi. Thank you very much for your comment. Actually getting the joint shaft into the right position is a tricky job. There is no specific method. My advice is to have a steady tool to hold the outdrive, so to be able to push it forward little by little, with no further troubles. My holding tool has wheels which run on a flat wooden board, so as to minimize friction. Apart from this, you just have to keep calm and be patient. The operation will take from 5 to 10 minutes.

With 2 pair of pliers bend a wire coat hanger to a small half round shape to cup and support the drive shaft. Then bend a short straight enough to clear the rubber then a 90° as the handle. . Far easier.

@@YZFR1mart The first time I used the coat hanger and she slipped right in 😁. The second time I was not so lucky😡 spent 10 min to no avail. Walked away took a break and came back needing to try something new so I removed the coat hanger got in there with my giant knuckled arthritic 10 thumbs w/surgical gloves and rotated the spline until she slipped in on third try. This video was just a BLESSING 🙏🏼SO MUCH APPRECIATED as I saved over $3,000 👍🏼 put in new u joints and freed up the sticky reverse locking mechanism and also new boots just because I wasn’t sure how long the ones had been on there as I just bought the boat. The old owner thought the outdrive was a major/minor issue long story short he knocked off $7500 because of the outdrive not staying locked when in reverse and doing the work myself cost less than $300 Never worked on an outdrive other than greasing the fittings. Even found a video to build the wooden dolly and of course already had 4 locking wheels lying around 👍🏼. Thank goodness we filled up both tanks last fall. Can’t wait to see my rod break off the downrigger line 🎣HOOO DAWGIES🤪🤩 THE SS 🚫CC’N CC is a Constant Complainer

great video thanks! my 290 drive keeps jumping when put into reverse , there is movement when I pull the leg up but seems to still be locked in place , is it a case if replacing the springs?
@stefanovaleretto3121
@stefanovaleretto3121 7 лет назад
Thank you Ollie Ox. I am glad you appreciated the video. Some little movement of the drive when you switch into reverse is normal and is due to the gaps in the locking mechanism. You can tell this from the trim indicator, which might increase of a unit when shifting into reverse (for istance from -3 to -2). If you have more than this, it means that there is too much gap in the mechanism due to excessive wear and you have to fix it. If it doesn't either stay locked in place, you have to adjust the retaining pawl mechanism. Usually there is no point in replacing the springs, which are subjected to no wear. If they are not broken they are OK.

Hello Capt. Steve what grease you used for locking screw and the suspension dowels. Any special grease for universal joint? I just remove my outdrive. Sadly I have broken suspension fork 😔. Thanks for answer
@stefanovaleretto3121
@stefanovaleretto3121 5 лет назад
Hello. For locking screw and suspension dowels a water resistant grease especially designed for nautical use since these items will be submerged. For universal joint a standard universal purpose grease will do. Do not spare on grease for universal joint: the more the better. Best regards.

I noticed that you replaced the plastic screw that holds the trim gear rack to the helmet with a stainless steel screw. I will be doing that too. Thanks Steve for the idea. Mine kept coming loose probably stripped. Why plastic VP?

I don't know. Stainless steel is for sure much better. But I didn't replace it. It has always been in stainless steel. May be the previous owner did.

So I'm getting into old man territory now that I'm in my mid 50s, but I have loved this song since it came out. The 1st time I heard it, I was like, whoa, RUSH just did a fuckin rap! Having witnessed the birth of rap, I was happy that they didn't mind trying something that they were listening to. As an aside, how the hell did no one mention War Paint as women applying make up? Christ I must be getting old.

I have never measured but it I assume some cm (4-5). For sure not 0.5 cm. Too little. And it also slides very easily. Must do it when you raise or lower the drive even if you don't see it. There must be a mistake. Take all measures and you will find it.

Hello Captain! Do you have by any chance some dimensions of your nice installation tool? Thank you

This doesn't really show anything that will save time that the average person wouldn't just figure out like what size wrench is this and that. It doesn't show close-ups and it assumes the average Joe knows what something like a muffler bearing hose is. Show how to get it off and that would really help. Getting it back on once you've gotten it off is a lot easier. This looks like a typical modern cluster muck design so a little talk as you go would help.

I bought a boat that the previous owner had removed the outdrive on. I found this video extremely helpful for reinstalling it as you step by step showed the the steps in their proper sequence 👍🏼. THANK YOU SO MUCH 😊.
