Probably this is how your valves and EGR piping looks
like after a few thousand miles in your Volvo.Watch the video and learn how to clean it and get rid of it!
Loosen the clamp on the intake pipe with a flathead
screwdriver and pull it off of the airbox.Disconnect the MAF sensor.Remove the air box.Use a size 8 Hex socket to remove the bolts holding the
cable management plastic. There should be 3 of them.Disconnect all the sensors and connectors on the top of
the engine that will be in the way.Remove the vacuum solenoid bracket from it's place.Using a T30 torx bit, remove the fuel line holding
bracket and move it out of the way.Using a T30 Torx bit,remove the 3 bolts holding the
vacuum reservoir tank and move it out of the way.Remove the second vacuum solenoid bracket.Using a size 11 Hex socket,remove the coolant pipe holding
bracket out of the way.Using a T30 Torx bit,remove the 2 bolts of the EGR
pipe on the intake manifold side.Using a size 10 Hex deep socket,remove the 2 studs of the
EGR pipe on the EGR Valve side.Remove the EGR pipe,but be mindful of the gasket.TASTY,INNIT?Disconnect the electronic throttle body.Loosen the clamp on the bottom of the throttle body.Remove the size 10 Hex bolts holding the intake manifold
to the engine,there is 5 of them.Also there is one size 8 Hex bolt on the bottom side of the
intake manifold,remove that too.Disconnect the fuel lines and move them out of the way.
If you watched the video till this point,here is a message
from me to you: don't be worried,afraid or stressed,we
are all beginners at some point in life. The question is
that can you make it to the end. I tell you it will be
difficult and will involve a lot of struggle. So make
mistakes and learn from them,and get up one more time.
Once it will be last time you will have to get up,and
then you achieved success.
I made mistakes in this video too,and it took me a decent
time to get this done,so head up and carry on!!!
Using a T35 Torx bit,undo the 3 bolts holding the swirl
flap actuator and then remove it.Now you will be able to remove the intake manifold.Look how dirty and disgusting it is...We still have to remove the EGR Valve and the cooler.Using the T40 Torx bit remove the 2bolts from the
EGR Valve and the piping.Using a size 10 Hex socket remove the 2 bolts from the
EGR cooler.Using a size 8 Hex socket remove the last bolt holding the
EGR Valve to the engine block.Also remove the coolant pipe to the EGR Valve, and
then you can remove the EGR Valve+Cooler.This is how it looks like...First,let's clean the parts..Separate the EGR Valve from the cooler by removing
the 4 bolts holding them together.Remove the plastic cap from your EGR Valve and
inspect it.If it moves freely like this one then you are good. If not
and it's sticking,probably it's the time for a new valve.Clean the EGR Valve from the carbon deposits.I used the STP Carb Cleaner and a soft nylon brush.Clean the EGR Cooler too.Be very gentle with it, you don't want to get it damaged.Separate the throttle body from the intake manifold by
removing the 4 Torx bolts holding them together.Clean the throttle body too.Remove the MAP sensor from the intake manifold.Clean the MAP sensor and the intake manifold too.
You can let the intake manifold sit in the carb cleaner
overnight for better results.
Unfortunately I lost the footage of it.
Lastly,clean the intake valves from the carbon deposit.
Use a long wire brush and the carb cleaner.You want to do it at the TDC(top dead center) of the
cylinder to have the valves closed and prevent the gunk
from getting into the engine.So you can work on 2 valves at a time. You will need an
endoscope to see which valves are open or closed.Let me show you how to open and close the valves.Lift one side of the car and put it in the 4th gear.However this works only if you have a manual car.
If you have automatic,you will have to manually
turn the crankshaft with a wrench.Then rotate the wheel forward and check on the
endoscope when are your valves in closed position.
I hope this video was helpful and you will be able to
tackle the job yourself.If you have any questions,don't hesitate to ask in the
comments!!!

No more errors and check engine lights i planing to clean it every year. So everybody who is reading comments dont be afraid to do this job by yourself give it a go. And thank You for video it really helped alot

Hello Mr Nice Guy 94. Great detailed video for this job. I have exactly same VEA engine in my Volvo XC70 D4 2016 with this failure. I will try undo these parts and perform cleaning. Last year i cleaned my EGR. I really regret 😢😊 not taking apart the intake and housing after I removed and cleaned egr. A good lesson is that from mistakes made you learn the right thing next time 😊👍👍🥂. Great thanks for this great done video. Wish you good luck on future projects.

Hi! Great video! Plan to do it tomorrow! Car has issue when engine is up to working temperature, car is blowing out smokes for couple seconds, if stopped at red light and car was working without acceleration! Hope it will help! Have only thoughts on cylinder head ports cleaning, as cannot get endoscope.

Just did this. Noticed that the plastic where the gasket goes is pitted, which is weird, 3rd cylinder manifold part was thinner then others. But had the same problem that top bolt is leaking. Which is also weird because the gasket does not touch that bolt. I guess the only thing is cracked intake. Also saw broken off guide pin. But good news is that after this cleaning i had smoother acceleration.

Great video, very helpful indeed! Also plus points for the nice touch in the middle about the DIY anxiety. I am preparing to do this to my V70 and I am getting more nervous and more encouraged at the same time, haha! Any advice on organising the bits and pieces as they come off? Do you label things as you go along to be able to retrace your steps during reassembly?

Hi, I think it would be beneficial for you to clean the intake manifold and the intake ports from carbon deposits. Although, in my opinion you have a faulty swirl flap actuator or stuck because of carbon deposits. So if you can do this job yourself, it worth trying I would say.

Hello Thanks for your video. I have already clean my EGR valve and I still have the "reduced performance" message. So I will clean the manifold and pipes going to cylinder head (from EGR valve dismounting I saw that the manifold was with lot of soot (like the cooler of my EGR). I remove the MAP sensor and it was very dirty, so the manifold should be as well. ONE QUESTION: to clean the pipe going to cylinder, I should be able to clean 6 of them as in worst case only 2 of them are open. I have an automatic gear box so the movement you show with the wheel is not applicable to my case, and 6 out of 8 is already pretty good. What do you think ?
@MrNiceGuy94
@MrNiceGuy94 9 месяцев назад
Don't worry, you can turn the engine over even if it is an automatic car. Find a proper sized socket and turn the engine over through the crankshaft pulley and monitor which valves are open and closed.

Hi, I have the polestar s60 2017 model, its done 28000Kms. Recently if I try and accelerate , it hardly goes faster but the RPMs hit the roof. If i drive smoothly, everything behaves normal. At speeds above 120 kmph there is a low bassy sound that comes. No errors on the dash. Got it checked and it showed No 6 ECM in red, with 6 codes like P023D00 - manifold absolute pressure- turbocharger sensor correlation, P029900 turbo/super charger underboost, P02CA00 turbocharger, P061A62 internal module torque performance, P00C300, P060C68 internal control module main processor performance, these are all in red. I have been told they will have to remove and check manifold for carbon. Any ideas what could be the problem if not the manifold. thanks
@TheAkabmf
@TheAkabmf 10 месяцев назад

Hello, of you having air flow too low fault code I would check for carbon buildup in the intake manifold. Simply just pull off the MAP sensor and check if it is dirty or clogged with sticky oily residue. If so that's the sign that you need to carbon clean your intake ports and intake manifold. Also if you are doing it you can clean the EGR as well. Hope it helps.

As I said to the previous commenter feel free to ask any questions,if I can help I will ;) BTW as far as I know here in the UK there is even a recall on the EGR cooler I believe or on the EGR pipe, I am not so sure on which one exactly tho.
