Volvo Trucks - Our first commercial autonomous transport solution

In a landmark agreement between Volvo Trucks and Norwegian mining company Brønnøy Kalk AS, six autonomous Volvo FH trucks will transport limestone over a five-kilometre stretch in a mine. Tests of this solution have been carried out successfully and will continue throughout 2018 to become fully operational by the end of 2019.
The deal represents Volvo Trucks’ first commercial autonomous transport solution that will run in a real operation. It is a new solution whereby the customer buys a transport service where Volvo Trucks takes full responsibility for the delivery of the limestone to the crusher.

Very cool indeed. On a side note I work for the company that designed and built the self-unloading conveyor system on the ship shown in the video. Pretty cool to see them in real life.

How will it handle winter/rain/fog and changing routes, and what if the sensors get muddy and fail?

This agreement involves a deal where the customer buys a total transport service. We take full responsibility for the transportation of goods within the system, in this case from the central stockpile to the crusher as well as for maintaining and supporting the solution.

Para un proyecto minero está bien la amplitud d la cabina , pero para rutas prolongadas se necesita más espacio el área d descanso del conductor me parece muy reducida , c empeñan en hacerla más hacia arriba q hacerla más hacia atrás , e incluso mejoraría la estética del camión , gracias

Do you have any videos on the actual technology behind this? I'd love to know more about how it operates - for example at 1:41 I'm guessing you have a lidar system to detect the surroundings.

I really like Volvo Trucks. But I've always thought that Volvo was about creating the perfect truck for the truck driver, so I'm not the biggest fan of this autonomous prototype. Maybe it's just me and I'm missing something, but I don't think that tens of thousands going into unemployment are... driving any kind of progress...

In the big picture we foresee an increased need for skilled drivers. We strongly believe that technology drives prosperity and takes society forward. In many factories today, some parts of the production are highly automated while some still need to be operated by people. We believe that the transport industry will evolve the same way. We foresee that there will be an increased level of automation where it makes sense, such as for repetitive tasks. This in turn will drive prosperity and increase the need for truck drivers in other applications.

"tens of thousands going into unemployment"? You mean like when the printing press was invented? When textile machinery was? When automated exchanges replaced the manual telephone switchboards? Like farriers when the automobile replaced the horse? Like coal stokers when mechanical stokers took over on ships and locomotives? You know what those people did when their jobs ceased to exist? Instead of crying about in a RU-vid comment section, they GOT OTHER JOBS. Nobody has ever succeeded in fighting technological progress, so my advice to you is to re-educate yourself, because you can't win this battle. Jobs come and go, and have done so throughout human history.

well thats not a valid argument... the human species has always been a lazy race, and we are always doing big advancements to make life easier for us. Instead of 100 farmers we can have 1 farmer + 1 tractor to do the same job. Efficiency is good for us.

@aboctok 20 drivers just lot their jobs but look at how many people had to work on the Volvo technology. How many people were involved to provide trucks to the mine, how many people were needed to make all of those things work, etc etc. The real problem would be if the technology was invented by artificial intelligence, trucks created by robots, and also provided to the mine by robot-drivers or whatever.

Ну задача что бы грузовик в условиях карьера работал 24\7 , робот не болеет, не уходит в декрет) не требует отпускных, и кормить его не надо)

@@_J242 ремонтировать в любом случае надо, проводить ТО надо, электроника требует обслуживания. на внештатные ситуации (судя по наличии меток) реагировать не будет, но могу и ошибаться. ничего не имею против - пусть работают ))

Whatever company filmed this for you, Volvo, made a huge mistake in the edit. I, as a viewer, part from a super short clip, never sees that there is no driver basically. Outcome is, it's a truck driving, like any truck. And since I don't see this non-driver situation visualised, well then there is a driver. Film production company fail....

But the video, which is to communicate an experience, in this case an experience about a self driving truck, misses the target, since it becomes an experience about a truck, like any other truck, driving in a regular truck environment. Do I make sense?
