A new car has joined the Spanner fleet - a Volvo V40 1.9 diesel - and even though it's meant to be a cheap hack, we rather like it. It's only got a few dents, has been owned by a mate's family since new and then by a very skilled Volvo mechanic who has worked his magic on it. It has a seriously comfy leather interior, and most surprisingly, it pulls like a train.
But as with any new old car, there's bound to be some little job that needs doing. And in this case, it was the dash - it was in darkness with most of the illumination gone west.
We decided to fix it - yes, actually fix something - and even managed a little upgrade into the bargain. The upgrade was to fit LED bulbs. This was a happy side effect of us being too mean to buy the genuine Volvo dash lights, but hey, that's win/win surely...?
We had a couple of false starts but we got there in the end, and our mistakes mean you'll get the job done in half the time and won't waste money (like we did...).
If you're looking for a lead on where to get the bulbs/holders, the ones I bought don't seem to be out there at the moment but there are similar ones: www.ebay.co.uk... The quality can be a bit iffy - they are incredibly cheap. Through experimentation, I've found these type to be more reliable: www.ebay.co.uk... I simply fitted these into the little plastic holders.
