I put a slim screwdriver under the cap, snapped the bits of plastic under the triangle shaped clip things on the box thet keep it in place. You can then remove the old cap without damaging the box. You can then replace the valve, backing and spring and then pop the new cap down to replace the broken cap. You technically could do it without removing the box at all.

Had the same issue with a 2005 XC90 2.5 turbo. Set up is a little different and its buried under the intake manifold and fuel rail on the front. Was able to get a box and hose kit and just replaced it all since I had to take all that off to get to it. Car has 410K on it and still going

WoW ! 410 K .. amazing. Reminds me of the old Volvo 240 . You are the second person who told me about the PCV under the intake in the last week, I have yet to tackle one. Thanks for dropping by

It's not bad if you spray the manifold bolts and know it's a very tight fit for the hands. @@mark_osborne

You can change that with out removal of the box. A little torch and a 90* pick. 8 seconds flame direct on the bottom of were the clip goes. Poke in the pick and break the bottom out. Remove four of the tap hole bottoms and lift cap off. Little bit of slippery stuf on the new one and snap in into place. 15 minutes if you Don't know what your doing.

Wife's 2008 Volvo XC70 is doing the same thing. It seems to happen after it is running for awhile. I just heard it. Her instinct told her that it was some sort of vacuum issue that was causing the whistle. I will have to see if there is a vacuum issue with the oil filler cap. I wish you would have been able to record the whistle before fixing it. The whistle is VERY loud. I could hear the whistle as she was driving up to the house.
@mark_osborne
@mark_osborne Год назад
Lift up the the oil fill cap on the top of the valve cover, if you get a big rush of air you'll know what's wrong as explained in the video... holy moley
@spanieaj
@spanieaj Год назад
Yup! I did that. Soon as I lifted the dip stick out, the suction was very evident and the whistling stopped. As soon as I put the stick back, the whistling started again. @@mark_osborne

I think this is exactly what I was looking for. However, the whistling is pretty intermittent on mine (2008 XC70) and it doesn’t even happen when it’s cold. I’m gonna look further into it but I think this is my solution. Thanks for posting this!

I recently got a oil change and shortly after my engine light came on and then this same whistling sound began shortly after. Any chance the mechanic who did the oil change caused this issue??????>

Good day Mister! I am having trouble with my volvo v70, 2011 gasoline engine. It makes a whining, grinding sound on the first 50 meters when the engine is cold and I put pressure on the gas pedal. I have been at 4 mechs already and nobody could help me. Would you be so kind to give me an address where I can send you the 30 second long video? Maybe you have heard something like this before?

@@cristoz8691 I watched the videos. With the engine running, remove the oil fill cap and place the palm of your hand over the hole. It should not build up vacuum. You should be able to hold your hand over the hole (sealing it off) and remove your hand with no "suction" . Let me know.

I have such limited experience with these engines I am not the one to ask. One thing I can say is they appear to be very complicated, certainly difficult to work on as there is a lot going on under the hood :-) Thanks for dropping by and be safe !

@mark_osborne Год назад
The Dorman part 917-147 in the video fits from 2007- 2016 both 3.0 and 3.2 liter. It appears the 2004 uses a different system, Dorman shows a PCV hose, part # 46826. Don't know if that helps.
