Followed directions on a '20 S60 T6. Worked perfectly. No start/stop error message and the park assist now works. Initially failed to disconnect the main battery and c two onnectors to the support battery. The warning messages remained. Follow the whole procedure and it works. Other videos failed to mention disconnecting the main battery and the two connectors. Glad I found additional necessary details here. Saved me from needing to visit the dealer. They'd offered to hook up VIDA as a couresy but this is saves both time and energy.
Followed your instructions for correcting the Start/Stop Service Required battery replacement. I followed each step you recommended and other than having a little trouble disconnecting the two wires the rest of the battery installation went smoothly. I waited 30 minutes before reconnecting everything and the all is working fine with no more Service message issue. Many thanks for taking the time to help Volvo owners save a few bucks.
Thank you for explaining WHY you unplug things or wait for x amount of time before proceeding and what may happen if you don't!! Make more videos like this so we can do the simple repairs ourselves instead of getting run over by the dealership. Keep on keeping on!
Thanks for this video. This is really helpful for resetting the system which I didn't know that when I watched other RU-vid video. I actually removed the rear batter connector (negative) for more than 30 min., and then system was reset. I couldn't see the alarms anymore. All good here.
Thanks for sharing all this great detail and taking the time to make this. It was great, but I couldn't remove the 2 cables / connectors on the front of the box that houses the support battery for the life of me. It was to the point that I was fearing I would damage them if I kept it up. Not sure if this will always work, but I found a Volvo Tech's post on Reddit who suggested simply leaving the car locked for 8 hours. Sure enough, the error disappeared after I did that. Maybe I got lucky, but I figured I'd share for the benefit of anyone else struggling with those cables.
Your correct those cables could be hard to remove. And yes you can leave your vehicle locked for over 8 hours and should fix this. By disconnecting those connectors it makes it faster
Great and simple explanation of procedures. I followed all instructions. The reset was over an hour while my son took me to the battery store and running some errands. After installation everything went smoothly well. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for the video. I just replaced my aux battery. Followed all the steps. After I finished I turn the car on and went for a ride around the block and all good!!!
Excellent your video and istructions !! have done this procedure when replacing the support battery on my XC 90 2018 and resulted very well. Thank you very much !!1 Carlos Roberto from São Paulo Brazil
Thanks for the video, worked perfectly! Just beware not to do the same mistake as I did and break the “Transmission Inverter Control Module” when disconnecting the main battery… that’s the bit that connects the main battery negative terminal to the harness. Replacement part is over $100….
Start/stop error will show after driving. After hard reset you need to drive at 20km/h+ to test it. If you replace battery without disconecting ECU and main battery you need to wait 24 hours and drive car for fer km to make message disapear. You shoud say in video to people they MUST buy Start stop battery. Same size of this are normal motorcycle batteries and this batteries will die after one year or less... I put 15AH to my V60 II, working well and can hold car for about 1hour in stop mode.
Thank you so much for posting this -- I had replaced my aux battery and was still running into issues, even though the aux battery was healthy and fully charged! You're a lifesaver, saved me from having to go to the dealership to get this done and saved me some $$$
Thank you for this instructions. Very useful. I have a question please. My start/stop is working erratically and also have sometimes the message of driving assistance temporarily not working. Should I have to unplug the connectors too or just replace the battery? Also when I removed the cover of the battery I saw the cable heads are full of some sort of build up out of the battery but is not rust. I cleaned it up but I am not sure is that is enough. Thank you!
i took my XC90 to, 2 different garages and they couldn’t figure out the problem, there error was testing the Support battery while it was still connected to the rear battery, so it still showed 12v. which the rear battery was, after watching your video, i removed the support battery, tested it, it was 6.8V got a new battery today, and all is good!! 👌
Exactly the same happened to me...kept on checking the aux battery voltage while it was still connected, showed 12 v something, after watching this video went back removed the battery and the voltage now was 9 something....thanks for all the help.
Thank you sir for this! Trying it as we speak😊 My 2019 v60 showed message about auxiliary battery needing service as well as power steering malfunction and parking sensors not available. All this connected to the auxiliary network...the thing is the battery i changed still had 12.6v. Not so bad, but the positive nut was loose. Maybe causing bad connection...
Great Video. Thanks! Question: My service department wanted $450 in labor to do this on top of the $154 battery cost. I asked "why so much" and they said because software had to be installed to make this new Aux battery work? It this true? I didn't see anything about software in your video. Were they just talking about the hard reset and calling it "software"?
Thanks so much for the very informative video. I have a 2021 S90 b4, less than 2.5 years old, at 22,000 km. Dealer told me the battery is at 60% life. No any reminder message so far. Didn’t realize the “support battery” and the “back battery” issue back then. May I ask, - the battery check at the dealer usually means the support battery? - or if my back battery (48v?) is really dying down, what warning message would I and would I still be have some time for the replacement before it drop dead on me? Thank you for taking your time to read and I really appreciated it if I get your reply.
Had the same issue. I live in a city where this system is simply not needed. Instead of turning it off every time I get in the car, can I just leave this battery there as it is? The fact that it's flat makes the whole start/stop system not working... and it suits me. Now.. is there a chance anything goes wrong if I leave it like this? Or perhaps, can I unplug it physically completely? Of course I get the warning on my screen each time. Another possibility for me that I might do here is to edit the car ECU soft so the car "remember" the last state of the start-stop system even after shutting the engine. So if I turn it OFF it will stay like this even if I turn restart the car. Thanks for the help!
@@ivayloivanovpln I would not disconnect it. The support battery on a Volvo. Primarily, it provides additional power for the vehicle's electrical systems and can assist the main battery in powering the Additionally, the support battery can help maintain the vehicle's electrical functions when the main battery is under heavy load or charging. Some system that get affected will be park assist and even steering
If you disconnect it you might have other issues. The support battery is not only meant for start stop system only. It might affect your park assist or your power steering system as well.
@wrenching Mafia - you have vids on replacing end gapes on rear sunroof seal, replacing weatherstirp, and cleaning the drains. seems like a common thing with these Volvos's I have a 2016....
Mine has a wet headliner even under light rain. I would appreciate that video very much. Typing while sitting and waiting for the 20 minutes to reconnect the batteries on my 2018 S90. Great video, btw! Hope it solves my problem. Thanks!
I recently had power steering failure light and there was no power steering after starting my 2019 s60. I turned the car off and then back on and no warning light and all was fine. The dealer told me it was likely the auxiliary battery failing and replacement would be $350. Do you agree?
We bought a certified '18 XC90 in 2021 and after letting the Volvo sit for couple of weeks due to vacation, the start/stop never worked and the local dealer said the Aux battery is fine. After 2 more trips to complain, they states the same. We just turned the start/stop off. Ours never gave any sort of warning about the stop/start.
Thanks for this fantastic video showing us how to do this. I just came back from the dealer to run the annual maintenance of the car and I reported that the start stop works randomly and I have a message on and off that the power steering assistance had reduced, which apparently can be connected with stop/start support battery issues. I don't have any message saying Start/Stop Service required though. Anyway, dealer says that they need to replace support battery and cables? Is this right? I was thinking about buying a new battery and replace it myself following your instructions but if new cables are required I would need to take the car to the dealer. I would appreciate your advice, please.
cables are easy to replace they just get corrosion. nothing complicated but if not comfortable with performing repair it’s best for a tech to do the repair 👨🔧
@@ROKAPENA honestly you dnt have to replace wires. Just spray some battery cotton spray and use a metal brush to remove the corrosion and you should be good
Thanks for your video, I wish I can have this tools and I guess you made it look easy in your video, have same problem with same message but first time dealer said all is good , but now it’s been for than 4 days message on the my dash and it will cost $400 plus to replace with the dealer. Any advice!! Or feedback. Thanks again
You can buy yourself some inexpensive set of tools and performed this job, nothing complicated. With these easy instruction you will be able to perform the job, you can contact me in my email you have any other questions wrenchingmafia@gmail.com
What if I tested the support battery and it’s over 12V. I proceed the disconnecting of all cables and main battery to perform a hard reset and the massage still comes up?
When you disconnect all batteries for 15+ minutes to hard reset, do you not have to enter some radio PIN or any non-sense like that to make all the systems work again? Thanks in advance for the answer.
@wrenchingmafia, I noticed that you changed 32238082 battery with 30659531. Which one would you advise to install in V90 T5 2020 if the price is the same?
@@WrenchingMafia I see that 30659531 has Cold start capacity 180A, and 32238082 - 170A, so it is not the same. In my car 31652780 is installed, and it seems that this model is discontinued (and substituted with 32238082)
@@WrenchingMafia awesome, thanks for the prompt reply. The first chance I get I’m going to disconnect that battery. I’m tired of disabling that feature every time I start the car. I just replaced the starter at 100k.
@@WrenchingMafia Most definitely, I will. I’ll start by asking about the oil. Stupid question, but under the hood says Castrol edge professional 5 30. Manual says the aforementioned and also I think 0 25 grade. Sometimes I can’t get to the dealer and these oil change places use 0 25 Castrol. I’ve had this car since Feb of this year. I want to use the right oil and stick to it.
@@MY-pj8cd I believe in your manual it will also show what oil has to be use depending on climate temperature. A lot of it might have to do with the climate environment you might be in. A suggestion is to call your local dealership and just verify with them and see what they are using there.
Thanks for uploading this! I had my support battery replaced about 7mos ago because I was getting to start stop msg and now it's started again few days ago. Could it be the same thing or the main battery?
I'm not sure I went to a mechanic would it show on the paperwork? They said they normally replace both batteries but I the support battery was pretty expensive so I only did that one I just don't want them to tell me it's the main battery and not be honest thank you
Hi - I have a 2018 XC90. The auto start/stop is not working always. Sometime it works and most time it is not. I ran with Volvo service center almost 2 years now and there are still not able to fix it. One time they replaced support battery and still issue not solved. Two weeks before they said everything looks good and they are not sure why it is not working always. any suggestion or advice?
This can be an issue with the main battery. In order for the start stop to work it needs to meet a lot of criteria to be able to work. Have you checked your main battery, if it’s in a slow state of charge this can cause it too. If you read your owners manual it will give you a detail list of criteria’s for start stop to function
@@WrenchingMafia They checked main battery too and said that looks fine as well. Though, the car meets all criteria for start/stop. Still I doesn't work all the times. It works sometimes but don't know what criteria it met. Should I hard reset myself like you described in that video?
Great video sir. Sorry but I absolutely detest Auto start/stop especially like the volvo one which cannot be permanently shut off. If the secondary battery is disconnected will this disable start/stop but leave the car running normally without issue or damage? This is the only thing putting me off the beautiful XC90 B6.
For the last few weeks, my wife has been using the start/stop service light as a way to not have to turn the auto start/stop feature off every time she gets in the car. I drove her car this morning and saw the warning message. When I asked her about it, she told me that she didn't bother mentioning it to me because everything else worked fine except the auto start/stop that she hates anyway. 😆
After 6 years this showed in my 2017 XC90, replaced a new aux battery yesterday but the display is still showing up? Did yours disappear after you changed it?
Have you ever had the cover not come off? The bolts on mine won't come out and the dealer is trying to charge me for cutting it off. It's the original support battery in the car.
Changing the auxiliary battery sooon, after noticing the start stop feature coming up, few days ago the main battery light came on could a bad auxiliary battery cause the main battery to act up as well?
Hello When we do hard reser for 15-20min with negative cable can we make some damage on the car? Mauby some code gone lost or so.. Thanks many many time.
So I have a 12v battery light on as well as the start stop… although sometimes the 12v battery light won’t come on and the next day it’ll come back on. When it’s on the only different thing I notice is the AC not blowing strong enough. When the 12v battery is off it’ll blow normally. I’m not sure if this is an alternator issue.. the car has its days when the 12v battery wants to come on and times when it comes off. Please help me. 2017 Volvo xc90… I do notice sometimes when I do a very quick start off the red light with the 12v light on the dash is the light will come off but then it’ll come back on when I’m not pushing the car as I did from the start. Please help
Hi, I tried it twice but still have the "A with a strike through" at the 500 RPM position. So no start stop, but no other warnings. It's a 2016 XC90 . I called the dealer and they said it needs a software upgrade to recognize the new battery. And the software is not free! It's $100 for software and $100 labor. Sounds strange. The battery is a new OEM volvo battery and shows 13V in DMM. THanks
Just recently bought a 2017 xc90 t6 and thinking this may be the issue with intermittent power steering message and then yellow non blinking check engine light? The start stop, we usually turn off, but when it’s on, it doesn’t always work….so will go ahead and replace both batteries and see if it works. Watched several of your videos and you seem to be most helpful! Keep at it Sir!
For a dealer, this guy is pretty rough with the car. I constantly wonder why plastic covers have broken tabs and don't fit they they should when I get it back from the dealer, and now I know why. Additionally, any quality mechanic knows that you remove the ground terminal first when disconnecting a battery....as well as putting the ground on last when installing so you avoid the arc, which you saw in the video, which can cause all kinds of electronic issues in these newer cars. There's just no pride in doing things correctly these days, it just another job to get done
