BTW it does recognize your foot waving underneath it instantly. It has 'n few seconds delay so that you can step back and not get hit in the face by the tailgate.
***** +Kar Wai Wong +Liang Yan That's right - we endeavour to review the most popular and best-value models, the kinds of cars that will be most popular. You can spend £80k+ on an XC90, and Volvo would love to show off their range-topping model, but we reckon the Momentum spec will attract most buyers!
it's a handsome car. hope the new xc60 looks like a smaller version of this when it comes out. I don't really need a 7 seater. but I'm in love with this car.
I have been waiting for this car to be reviewed by you guys for ages. I think this is one of the few cars that could touch the range rover in terms of its luxurious. This is just the best family car to be released this year.
You seem to have done the only review that shows how to use the seats etc! Excellent review as usual, love this car...... will order it as my new lease car
finally! ty, i´ve been waiting so hard for the rewiev of this new volvo. I would really appreciate a review of the hybrid version, which has the highest trim level and must give (i think) a totally different driving feeling, performance and fuel efficiency.
Many are confused now when Volvo is owned by a Chinese company, some think that Volvos are built in china and stuff. But really, this Chinese company helps Volvo make fully Swedish cars, with no Ford parts. The other cars Volvo build now have Ford platforms, that's about to change, soon they will replace the V70/S80 with their Scalable Product Platform they recently designed.
***** I bet the Chinese made Volvos are good to, Volvo have to train them and use the same materials so in the end it's gonna be fine i guess, the Chinese wont mind atleast and thats the main target, the Americans are a different story.
It's a nice car! Volvo have really improved their image in the last few years IMO. Though if I was in the market for s car this size I'd get a Range Rover Sport. My dad has one and it's an amazing car, very capable indeed. It's also extremely quiet, comfortable and surprisingly good on fuel!
The sensor to wave your foot under is more to the left than the center. It's nice to see a "cheaper" trim level for a change and a D5. Until now most of the reviews were those of T6 Inscriptions.
Really like this car, a real nice, classy alternative to the X5 or Mercedes ML. I think some buyers may even move from their previous gen Range Rover to one of these
Foot waving is slow because you're doing it wrong... how about learning before complaining. The sensor is just under the left exhaust tip and your foot should be led forward/backwords, not to the sides. Thank you.
I come from a family where German cars are king, we've had a lot of Mercs over the years including a 64 reg ML but I would have one of these XC90s over an ML, Q7 or X5 any day of the week.
I don't know why but I really like SUVs, especially this one. Because some of these are just really practical, something you won't hear in many sports cars. Don't get me wrong, I love supercars, hypercars, muscle cars. But they should stay in the virtual world for me. Also, before this review I had a goal of buying the Land Rover Evoque (or something like that, I forgot the name :/) but now it got blown away by this XC90! Good job Volvo!
Probably one of the most beautiful SUVs on the market today. It's just so elegant and modern. I love it. The interior is also very refined. I would love to try out the new XC90. The only thing that seems to bug me is the power... I'd say that such a big SUV needs at least 250hp to drive properly.
A bit uninspiring for car enthusiasts perhaps, but a very good premium people-hauler overall, packaging and interior being the strongest points. To me, this is much more successful generation change that Audi Q7.
I really like the XC90 as I could try it out already. Funny thing is, how people still complain about certain features and compare it to BMW, Mercedes etc. saying 'German' brands are still superior. I just don't understand it, because it simply is not true. I mean, I am German myself, but how can one be this stubborn? For example I've seen a test where the safety systems of certain brands were tested. Despite being compared to the newest cars from BMW, Mercedes, VW and Renault, the new Volvo XC90 was the only(!) car that managed to warn of an obstacle in front AND break in time to avoid a collision. The other cars as well saw the obstacle but could not avoid a collision. Grow out of your brand fetishism people... AND STOP FUCKING CRYING ABOUT THE ENGINES!
Hired this car, and was quite impressed, however in the corners your body moves with car, which was not very comfortable. The set-up was not very stiff
I have a burning question. How does the 4wd on the the T8 work? Is there always 4wd all the time? Are the front wheels powered by the 2 liter upfront and the rear wheels powered by the 80hp electric motor in the rear? What happens when the electric motor runs out of charge? My understanding is that there is no mechanical linkage between the front and rear. So i am not clear on what happens when the electric motor runs out of charge
why do you only review base model volvos and other cars with a bunch of upgrades, this really makes it hard to pick between cars.. please review cars that are representable in the real world
Maybe it's just because I'm a slight technophobe but I really don't like that huge touch screen in the middle of the dash. I would worry about people being distracted by it.
Firemarioflower In case you didn't realise, I wasn't bothered by your reply. If anything, I was condescending towards it. I can't take you seriously the longer I argue with you. And when did I ask for it?
***** Please go to the Volvo website and build one for yourself so you can see. In order to get LED headlights you have to get the momentum package. Thanks for your info but I work at Parkway Volvo and my mom bought an XC90. Seems like you're wrong. :/
I don't get why manufacturers insist on making big ass SUV's with tiny 2.0 litre 4 cylinder engines. They just can't cope with the bulk of the car. Put a 3.0 V6 diesel in it, this would make it a much better car and it would also not effect the fuel economy, because a bigger engine would be under much less stress.
+TheCocaColaManiac Power is Power... doesn't matter how it is generated. Althought I would prefer at least a 5 cylinder for smoothness and better engine noise.
If Ford had patented that foot wave to unlock the trunk feature, they would be rolling in money. Look how many companies copied them on that. Then the automatic rear folding seats with a push of a button that first appeared on the 2004 expedition, another they should have patented
OK then, there is a 2.5 D5 (alu block five cylinder), a 2.9 T6 (straight six) and the only 2.0 is the T8, which is a 5-cyl again. How are these 3 choices limited to a 2.0 4-cyl engine because I don't see a single one matching the type?
Gotta love Volvo designers. "We kept the same design for zillions of years, and when updating comes, we just change the lights, fascia, stick an Ipad in the dashboard and tell people we have changed totally the car. Now we can go back to sleep for other 12 years..."
I'm really impressed with everything except the engine choices, altough 225hp and 33mpg-8.5l/100km consumption average looks nice. But these large boxes just need a forced induction V6 to move around. And if you want a premium buyer you need to have a premium engine.
Denis Lalić Not really and Volvo can't match the others, they have to stick to this but Audi and Bmw sell so many low powered diesels so they can put v6es in the larger suvs and still have a all around emissions.
Brunlera I know what you're saying, but I stick to my opinion regardless of the emissions they need to achieve. They just won't sell them as much as they could because V6 rivals cost just a little bit more (at that price point). I could be perfectly happy with a S80 2.0 225hp diesel, but a big box needs a big engine.
Denis Lalić But if you look on smaller SUVs and in cars in general 90% of them sold are 4-cylinder diesels in Europe, a Bmw 5-series 535i/d sell in very small numbers and how premium is a 180hp 2.0 diesel? Bmw sell alot of them and they rattle alot in idle or in low revs and nobody give a damn because they are after the badge.
Brunlera You can have 2.0 180hp diesel in the 1series-fantastic, goes like hell, 3series- great, 5series-ok, can do, 7series- no way and then comes the X5. You can talk about emissions all you want, but the fact is that car will have a really hard time pulling itself. They can sell it in Europe, but in the global "not emission burdened" market buyers will go to ze Germans for a V6.
Denis Lalić How can it be so hard? A 5-series with a 180hp diesel is fine, dose 0-60 in 9sec...if you pack if ful and sit 5 people down in it it's heavyer than a 7-series and that's not impossible, its not impossible to put one extra turbo on either and it makes 200+ easy and pull big car around with ease. Small engiens work fine but they lack the smoothness of the 6-cylinders, soon though everything will become smaller, v12/10s are almost a thing of the past now soon the 8 and 6 is going away and more and more 3-cylinders are coming etc.
The new Q7 is outdated. It looks like an pimped Volkswagen Touareg compared to the XC90. Volvo has a bright future. I really love the new XC90. The exterior and interior design, the modern luxury, 4 cylinder engines packed with power. It is the best SUV. I say good luck to german rivals. Swedish quality rules!
