Hindenburg empowered Hitler and defended the Enabling Act of 1933. He explicitly said that the SPD who were mere liberals had "Stabbed Germany in the back" therefore justifying their persecution and murder.

According to the constitution of the Kaiserreich, the Reichskanzler and the Kaiser were in charge of making Peace or War. The Kaiser wanted to stop this war since 1916 but it was England and France who refused to negotiate and both countries demanded the unconditional surrender of Germany so there never was a time when Hindenburg and Ludendorff could decide About war or Peace.

Alas, he was too old. He was incredibly courageous though to take him on even at 84 years old. If only Germany had been able to economically recover from the Depression while he was alive, perhaps the Nazis would have started to lose favor with the public. We can only speculate though.
