Vortex may not be a famous arcade -- it's a 1980 title based off Space Invaders hardware, and it's not very good. However, it's the first game that Chris Stamper worked on, the man who would later co-found Ultimate: Play the Game and Rare, producing legendary titles for the ZX Spectrum, NES and beyond.

I thought that my eyes were going. Only 87k subscribers to this channel? This is nuts. The channel should be called Kim Injustice. The detail and depth of these videos are exemplary and deserve a far wider audience, given the sheer size of the gaming audience. smh

3:10 - Makes sense. Try too hard to chase that high score and eventually you'll kill yourself doing so. It helps when it's stationary.

The Stampers learned a lot from their time in arcade game design. It reminds me of a video I watched recently (by The Electric Underground channel) , about how the death of the arcade means a lot of knowledge about good gaming UI/UX is dying with it. Maybe all wannabe game designers should be obliged to make at least one half-decent game on old arcade board technology, just to learn those lessons again?

The Pit was developed by Andy Walker, Tony Gibson, and Taskset - the Stampers adapted it to Centuri's hardware for wider distribution. I haven't played Vortex, but I do enjoy Blue Print (which got a decent C64 conversion). Vortex artist John Lathbury was another key early member of Ultimate.

What it shows about them is they always prioritize money over game play. They released an uncontrollable mess. They did so with the conscious decision to do it. They could have required a panel upgrade. Many games did this. There are many games and clones that will run on Pac Man hardware. Virtually all require replacing the control panel. Bad controls has ruined more games than probably anything else in gaming. Bad graphics, bad sound, dumb premises can all take away from an otherwise good game and knock its review score a bit lower. But nothing ruins a game and makes it unplayable like bad controls. Crashing into the score costs a life? Talk about bad design.
