A vorticella feeds, we can see the cilia good here, then is visited by a couple ciliates several times. 400X magnification.

So that's what those things are called. I saw this last night too. It reminded me of a trap when it snapped like that. I'm going to have to research what that function is. But anyhow, it reminds me of a nematocyst, but of course that's a totally different function (I'm just thinking shape wise, and the quick trigger).

Looks like I saw a Euplotes ciliate last night. It was so neat seeing these organisms so clearly with my own eyes!

@Znobyrd Hi Znobyrd, I'm actually really interested in your estimation of that company's product. I had actually considered them because they seem really cheap compared to other companies. The only worry is that that cheapness will translate into the product too. You said "pretty good optics". Are the outside perimeter of the image blurry compared to the center? That's quite important in my book. Or is there that, and also chromatic aberrations too? Overall, what's the scope quality like? Thx.

@huyked The Amscope website says "Made by the same OEM supplier that provides optical instruments for Leica, Zeiss, Nikon and Olympus". These are NOT cheaply made, they are heavy (mine weighs 17 lbs.) and almost all metal, very well built scopes, I am very pleased with the quality, they are not toys. Many of their objectives are made by Nikon. What they did was keep the optics good but certain things are not as "fine" as they could be like fine focus, and there's no iris on the illuminator.

@huyked Hi huyked. All my microscope videos are from the Amscope 490B, so you can see the quality there, not too shabby. I was sorta on a budget and asked around on You Tube. A couple guys suggested this brand as best quality for the price. Basically from what I can tell, they are based on the Olympus scopes, without as many features, but the optics are actually very good. I am still using the standard achromat objectives, so the edge is a bit blurry, but I can get better objectives for it.

@huyked Ooooh! Nice. I'm using an Amscope, not quite the scope you have, but pretty good optics.

@Znobyrd Hi Znobyrd, Nope, no reason to apologize at all. I like all the information you provided, and also the jerky stage movement bit. That's a great fact to know. That would be a deciding factor for me, the negative aspects. Either it's laggy, or jumpy/sticky (not good). Thanks, huyked

@huyked In a nutshell, the Amscope has laboratory quality optics, but lacks the fine features found on more expensive scopes. It is a very well built... simple scope.

@huyked I shoudl clarify, there's no iris on the illuminator, but there is an iris on the condenser, so it works very well.

Hello Znobyrd, Thank you very much for the review! The details you reviewed are exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for the clarification about the illuminator (non-Kohler). It looks to be a great scope for the price. Take care, huyked

@huyked Welcome. Sorry I wrote so much. The stage movement on the Amscope is a bit jerky, other than that, I'm pleased.

@huyked Good to hear. Hey, what kind of scope do you have?
