These old black and white educational videos are the best. Extremely helpful!

For anybody curious, this is from "Vorticity" a 1961 film with Ascher H. Shapiro put on by The National Committee on Fluid Mechanics Films with the support of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Ford Foundation Grant).

This experiment demonstrates that the Earth is rotating and is not flat. The apparatus as stated has been constructed to ensure that any Coriolis force would be the dominant force. Because the water is rotating, then a Coriolis force is present and as there is no obvious Coriolis force being directly applied to the water, then it must be induced by a rotating Earth. Now as the water rotates counter clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere on a rotating Earth, then this means that the Earth can't be flat, as the water would have to rotate in the same direction if the Earth were flat, and it doesn't

12:18 Shouldn't the vorticity vector point in the opposite direction(left-hand side), as per the right-hand rule?

sorry this is very late. but yeah i think so too, he did it another time when he was doing the v X omega. perhaps he was doing a left hand rule instead. which maybe is common in the old days. But no one i know really does it that way in america. unless they feel like it

Yes, the atmosphere behaves as a fluid, as gasses behave as fluids. Meteorology is a study in fluid dynamics and thermodynamics.
