This video explains just about all you need to know about measuring the tread depth of your Class 4 (UK) car tyres for the MOT. With this information you can check your tread depths properly and know the limits and criteria an MOT inspector follows.
Every part of the test is very complicated and needs years to learn. With simple instruction anyone can check each part!

This tyre's nominal width is 205mm but this is rarely correct when measured. For the MOT test, your instruction is incorrect. You have to measure 75% based on the centre line of the actual tyre in contact with the road as evidential by the tread footprint wear marks. You must never use the size printed on the sidewall! Also,any tread near the outer edge of any tyre that is shallower than the central portion when manufactured, is discounted as tread, so this can be bald on a class 4, often up to the first circumferential groove!.. Refer to VOSA Inspection Manual at www.gov.uk . MOT Guide and Inspection Manual for Classes 3,4,5,7 Vehicles, Section 4.1 tyres (tread,pattern,breadth and width).

I think you're referring to what is called raised tread pattern. like the min depth mounds on some tyres have parts of the cut out section that are not as deep as others. You must always and only measure parts of the tyre that were cut to the maximum depth originally. I did say this in my video you probably missed it cuz I rambled a bit

what happens if the tyre is under-inflated and a NOMINAL (haha) 205/60/15 has 215mm touching the ground do you now over measure??? You don't do YOU. YOU just make up a width and PASS or FAIL according to friend or foe. I had a car go in your garage for test and have video proof soon to be published on youtube for all to see. I measure the tyre of four cars in you depot and sent one in myself. You are a hypocrite and fraudster.
