Vox AC15c1: 1x12 vs 2x12 cab shootout
Today's video is a Vox AC15: 1x12 vs 2x12 cab shootout . We'll explore the pros and cons of the 1x12 and 2x12 for both Live and studio applications. You'll get to listen to both the 1x12 Greenback and the 2x12 WGS ET65 with the Vox AC15, both in solo and in a mix.
We'll be looking for changes in amplitude and differences in frequency content. The goal is to see if the 1x12 cab is sufficient for both Live and in the studio, or if the 2x12 cab performs better in both these situations. It will be up to you to decide.

I have 1 & 2 x 12 Vox AC 15's I would use two other cabinets if on stage to left & right to push out or go through the PA. I don't do the distortion sound that much - in fact it's clean most of the way unless I'm warming up the amp for a little Hendrix style tune as you did. I do use boosts and nice warm reverbs which the Vox makes so sweet. My Vox amps are 27 & 41 years old. My natural habitat was for many years the studio.

Thanks, I will add I used an old dead 4 x 12 cab to make two monitors that are bevelled and run from my amps. ( Hey I made a Marshall useful for more than screaming metal ...lol). I got the speakers online and paid about £300 for them delivered.

That sounds like a very cool setup. I'm considering getting a band together, and would definitely use a 2x12 cab in this instance. I'm contemplating getting a second amp as well. Totally debating getting either an AC10, AC15C2, or a Fender Deluxe Reverb. I play clean and dirty tones, pretty much equally, so having one amp as the clean and the other as dirty would make sense to me. How are you liking your vintage Vox amps? Is there a huge difference between the 41 and 27 year old models?

I've noticed for many years that if you take the AC15 outdoor in one of those open venues where you don't even have a wall behind it's very hard to make it sound right, I mostly play hard rock with the amp cranked + treble booster, distortion just sounds "rotten" for exactly the reasons you've mentioned, a small single speaker with a smallish open back cab outdoor loses too many bass and mids, sounds is pushed 50% forward and 50% backward being an open back, so you only get a portion of the full sound in these circumstances, and there's no way a sound man can fix this messy sound trough a mic and a PA, if the amp sounds shitty on stage, stay sure it'll sound shitty through the PA as well, this is my personal experience with these amps which I've been using for a decade by now, the AC15 is a magnificient amp that will provide you all the classic Vox tone you need, but to sound right and warm it really requires walls, outdoor it'll just turn into a beamy box of nails, almost digital, so unless you really like this sound I recommend using it inside only, where it can really have some justice, for this reason I also bought the AC30, it still suffers a bit if you're in a very open space without walls but the 2 speakers and bigger cab really helps and reduces this unpleasent effect to an extent, even with the AC30 if there's no wall behind me I try to create a shield to place behind the speakers with some instrument bags, cases, so that the amp will push mostly forward than backward, a closed back amp is surely more consistant outdoor, but nothing can beat a Vox amp if you're lucky enough to gig in venues with some decent acoustic and a good protected spot where you can place it .

Hey Kevin, That is some fantastic insight my friend. Playing live shows is a steep learning curve, even for veterans. Amps being build with different enclosures and speakers choices means that we have to learn what our amps are great at, and what they need help with. Even in my humble home studio, if I put the amp farther away from the wall, I start to hear a decrease in the bass frequencies. So, I tend to record the AC15 a maximum of three feet away from the wall. Of course, you can always use a mic like an SM57 and close-mic it to benefit from the proximity affect, but if you lost a tonne of bass because you are smack-dab in the middle of a large stage, then the mic won't be able to add what isn't there to begin with. A 2x12 makes way more sense because of the perceived volume increase and the dispersion/spread of the two speakers. Someone on the channel recently brought "beam blocking" to my attention, which is a very interesting topic. I'm experimenting with it right now and I'll be sharing my thoughts on it in an upcoming video. Thanks for the feedback, someone else will be able to read your comment and will benefit from your insight. Cheers

I guess it all based on personal taste and perception, but I don’t hear the 1x12 as boxy at all. To me it more fuller sounding with more tone. The 2x12 is the one that sounded boxy, scooped in the mids, with less definition, sort of out of phase. I use the WGS ET-65 in a 1x12 myself and it sounds awesome.
@TheToneLounge
@TheToneLounge 5 лет назад
You are right Adam, tone is subjective. The ET65 is a great speaker, and I did enjoy it a lot on it’s own. I even thought of replacing my Greenback with it. In the end I chose to keep the Greenback, as I am familiar with it’s sound. Thanks for your input. Cheers

@TheToneLounge
@TheToneLounge 5 лет назад
+Midnight Raiin before you do anything, make sure your cab works with your amps impedence. There is a switch at the back if your amp, you can select 16 or 8 ohms. If your 4x12 is 4 ohms, DON’T plug it in! Your AC15 can only go as low as 8 ohms. Your amp only works with a external speaker (16 ohms) or exterior 2x12 (8 ohms). 4x12 are typically 4 ohms, which would be too hard on your amp. So please make sure to use the appropriate ohms for your amp. Cheers

@TheToneLounge
@TheToneLounge 4 года назад
That's the thing with speakers, it's always a balancing act. If you play mostly distortion, then you go with the speaker that sounds best. If you play mostly clean, then you go with the speaker that sounds the best. If you play both, then you have to make a hard choice.

The 2x12 has a soft, woolly sound because of the horizontal orientation of the speakers. I'll bet that it'll sound much different if the cab is turned 90 degrees with the speakers aligned vertically. I have a 1x12 open back - used to own a 2x10 and didn't like the soft woolly sound.
@TheToneLounge
@TheToneLounge 5 лет назад
+Rock & Roll MD the 1x12 definitely cuts through the mix much better it this scenario. The 2x12, imho, has better spread on stage so you can walk around and hear yourself. The biggest difference I heard is between the ET65 and the Greenback. The ET65 has a much smoother highend which sounds great with clean tones but less aggressive with gain. The Greenback strikes a balance between both.
@rockandrollmd541
@rockandrollmd541 5 лет назад
@@TheToneLounge Your video was very good at showing the difference between the two. Even though they were different speakers, a horizontal 2x12 will have a smoother top end. 1x12's are definitely more directional and punchy, especially in the treble frequencies. If you move 30-45 away from the center, the treble disappears. I've been experimenting with tape on the grill (beam blocking) to block the treble beam in order to spread the high's more evenly for live playing. A horizontal strip of tape across the center simulates 2 vertically aligned speakers and gives very wide sound dispersion of the treble. A vertical strip simulates 2 horizontally aligned speakers and produces a smoother top end on my 1x12 (recorded it on my phone to compare). You can manipulate the sound of a speaker in many ways by taping the grill like SRV, adding/removing back panels etc.
@TheToneLounge
@TheToneLounge 5 лет назад

I play on a Vox AC10 equipped with original 1x10 "vintage celestion 30 Watts speaker. I am very satisfied of it: weight and small footprint, crunch sounds and reverb are goods. For me it's a reduced size and price version of the AC15. I say that to give a comparison order. Now what about the AC15 test: In big rythmics, I prefer the sound in 1x12" for the saturated sound that crunch earlier, and which slice better in a mix. We then find the sound Vox more authentic, it is fat and drooling wish. In clear tones, I prefer the 2x12 "which saturates less quickly, and delivers a more articulated sound, better for solos. Moreover the sound spectrum of the two loudspeakers being wider it enriches the game and diffuses better in the open spaces, but it brings nothing inside.
@TheToneLounge
@TheToneLounge 5 лет назад
The different cabinet sizes, speaker sizes and speaker combinations, all affect the tone immensely. I remember trying the AC10 and thinking it had a much better gain than my AC15, but sounded a bit more heavy in bass due to the closed back. I also owned an AC30C1, which sounded different because of it's 1x12 cab, instead of the 2x12. I also had an AC4C1, I got great tones out of that amp, but it sounded very "boxy" due to the small cabinet. At the end of the day, if you dig the Vox sound, you'll be happy with pretty much any of their amps. They all sound fantastic, it's just a matter of finding the right fit for you. Your AC10 has an external speaker jack, 16 ohms if I recall, which means you can use an external cab for Live performances. I prefer the 1x12 for studio situations, but the 2x12 option is very cool for shows. Have you tested your amp with a 2x12 cab?
@agal8400
@agal8400 5 лет назад
Unfortunatly not at this time my friend, but it's a part of my future Vox project. That's one Reason of my choise for the AC10C1. I pass a lot of time playing guitar at home but i live in flat for the moment. Also, there is a house project, and the 2x12" speaker cab will be useful then. Sometimes i'm read some review of persons who have changed the celestion 10" for a 12" green or blue back. I think that can be an interesting upgrade to. For finish, the first time where the tubes was rinced on the AC10, i've tested the amp with back panel open, mi-open, or close. That's sound very different too (and changing is free). My choice for the new tubes was TAD premium set. The saturation come later, but the clear sound is more detailled, and theere's more gain than the chinese tubes. The crunch sound better with more basse, and the medium well preserved sound less boxy. less rough. Do you have tested one Vox amp with different speakers type; green back, blue alnico back for exemple?

I have tried it with the WGS ET65, the stock Greenback and a Wharfdale speaker. I'd like to eventually try an Eminence speaker too. What I would really love to get my hands on are either an old Celestion Silver Bell or an old Celestion G12 65. The speaker is a big factor, open vs closed back (as you mentioned) is also very important. I love experimenting with this kind of stuff.

@TheToneLounge
@TheToneLounge 2 года назад
It's all about the flexibility that a head gives you. You can hook it up to any matching cabinet (matching in terms of their impedance). So if you try a cab with certain speakers and don't like them, you can hook up the amp to something different and not have to take the amp apart to swap out the speakers. A combo amp requires you to take out a lot of parts just to swap out the speaker. If you don't like it, you have to start over again. It's quite time consuming. Acoustic guitars and electric guitar amps are not a good match, so I would not recommend it. The acoustic guitar sounds thin and honky when hooked to an electric guitar amp. And never, ever plug one amp to another amp. That would be a terrible mistake.

The 2x12 sounds more smooth, rounded, pleasing. And the 1x12 is the signal the sound guy will choose. Not taking so much space and cutting through the mix. Same with the SM57 against "better" mics, at least for live situations.

Hi. Great video. I just can't decide between 2x12 and 1x12. I play at home in the living room and can have a good volume. I'm using a JHS AT+ and I like darker tones (played through an AC30C2 (amp is too loud for home) - normal channel, with the Tone Cut on the amp all the way up - almost cut sort to say, and the eq on the pedal at 11o clock. Would a 2X12 be ok for a living room or should I go with a 1x12? I am afraid of the 1x12 being louder on this set-up than my previous Marshall DSL40C - used on half power mode and with the same pedal, to achieve the Andy Timmons tone. BTW I was blown away on how exact I got on the AC30C2 combined with Andy's guitar and JHS signature AT pedal. I hope I could get the same sound from either one of the AC15s...:)

For home use you should be fine with a 1x12. That is what I use ere in my studio. The 2x12 will give you more low end, which might not be what you want in an apartment. The 2x12 is not much louder at lower volumes, it's when you crank it up that you have a bit more perceived loudness and more dispersion.

Like you said, apart from solo clean playing, I preferred the 1x12". So, in a sparser mix, where the guitiar is front and center, and has room to breathe maybe the 2x12 would be the choice. Like in a clean blues jam, modern jazz, slow soul, it might sound better. But in a denser mix, it was weird how the 2x12 actually sounded more recessed in the mix. And I much preferred the dirty sound on the 1x12. Though, maybe that's partly about the difference in the drivers, not just that there are two of them in a larger cabinet. In a way, it was like the difference between a Telecaster and a Jazzmaster. The Tele might sound a bit small and pointy solo, but oth, it bites harder.

Hi Brendan, I don't know for sure. Amp wise, the breakup is the same since it is tube driven. In terms of the speakers breaking up, they start to distort at much higher volumes. So you will get more early breakup from the 1x12 and a tad more headroom with the 2x12. Hope that helps. Cheers

@@TheToneLounge Thank you. I mainly play in a situation where our PA is between 95/98db in a somewhat large building. My amp is usually mic'd and on stage, so I'm trying to find the right amp combo to get me an output that won't overtake our stage sound, but still enough that I can hear well enough for personal reference. That's probably mid 60's db. The more headroom the better in my opinion, but I do like to sit right at the edge of breakup where picking really dictates my clean/heavy tones. I tend to hate solid state amps but this one (again as it sounds on my laptop) sounds really good, at least clean. @@TheToneLounge I'm willing to go up to about a grand. I'd like something loud enough that I'd be able to play with a drummer; I'm thinking 15 tube watts is probably adequate but just barely. When it comes to sound, I suppose I'm looking for a "vintage" rock sound more than anything else--old Rolling Stones, the Ventures, etc. I'd also like to be able to play harder stuff credibly (punk rock, Nirvana-esque stuff), but I have no need or desire to play modern metal or anything with a ton of gain. At the moment, I have a Les Paul Jr. and a Charvel, as well as a little one watt Blackstar tube amp. The Blackstar sounds good and is surprisingly loud, but obviously isn't up to playing with a drummer. Yea, the Roland Jazz Chorus is known for having crappy distortion, at least the old JC 120's were. I guess the JC40 has a better distortion, but it's probably nothing to write home about either. But I do really like the clean sound, and bands like the Smiths and the Cure (two bands I like) used JC 120's back in the day. But I'm not going to want to play clean all the time, and that's the problem with the Jazz Chorus (or rather that's the problem with not being able to afford a Jazz Chorus as well as another amp that sounds good with some dirt on it). I suppose my best bet all things considered would be to get the AC15 or a Fender of some sort--something that can do clean and do relatively dirty. Thanks for taking the time. @@profd65 never apologize for leaving awesome comments, this is why I made the video, so I could help out fellow musicians. With $1000 you have a lot of choices. You could go new or used, but used is ill advised if you don't know what to look for. So if you want to go used, take someone with you IF you are not used to it. Otherwise, used has the most choices for that budget. New is obviously a bit more limited in terms of options, but you do get a brand new amp with the warranty. In terms of amp models, and the styles you referred to, I will give you some suggestions. First, let's establish that watts do not equal decibels. So a 15 watts tube amp can be very loud. The AC30 can easily keep up with with 50 and even 100 watt amps. Here are a few models to look at: Orange Rocker 30, they can be found used for less than a grand (usually about $700 here in Canada), has good clean and awesome classic rock tones. Vox AC15, I am biased but I think this one is a no brainer. Loud enough to keep up with a drummer, has a great clean tone and work amazingly well with pedals. The distortion gets those classic rock tones down to a T. Fender Deluxe Reverb 68, in my humble opinion is a fantastic amplifier. Sounds killer and is plenty loud for most applications. I have that one on my list. New they are over your budget, but used can fit in your budget if you look often enough on craigslist. The Blues Junior and Bassbreaker 15 might also be worth checking out. Let me know if you have anymore questions. ;)

Hi Margoreth, My first concern would be that 2x12 cab. Does it match the impedance of your AC10? Your AC10 should most likely be 16 ohms, so before pulling the trigger on that Mesa cab be sure that it's a 16 ohm cab. Mismatching ohms can result in premature wear or even damage to your amp. As far as tone, it depends what is loaded into that Mesa cab. From my past experience with Mesa, these come loaded with either Black Widow or Vintage 30's. I can't speak on the Black Widow with a Vox, but the V30 is a great speaker. How would that change your core tone? It would be neither good or bad, just different. I have a video, which I will link below, where I show what different speakers sound like with a Vox. Hopefully that can help you in your purchasing decision. I hope that answers your question. The difference in level in the room but not in the close mic'ed recording is no great surprise. You've got 2 speakers putting sound into the room from the C2, and only 1 from the C1: so the C2 is 3dB or so louder in the room. But your mic is only in front of one of the two speakers... meaning that the other speaker in the C2 isn't really being "heard" by the microphone: it's only picking up the speaker it's right in front of. If the close mic was louder on the C2, this would effectively double down on the difference between the two amps: the speakers on the C2 would both individually be louder than the speaker on the C1 - and there are also two of them. but this isn't the case.
@TheToneLounge
@TheToneLounge 3 года назад
Very true Richard. When I interned at Blue Wave studio in Vancouver, I got to talk with other audio engineers, the consensus with them was that a 4x12 and 2x12 was still louder then a 1x12, even if single mic'ed, since the mic was not completely rejecting the audio source from the sides. Due to the close proximity of the other speakers, the mic could still pick up signals coming from the left and right. Since the SM57 is not hyper-cardioid, it's not totally rejecting the source from both sides, but I was surprised to find out that in this particular instance it had no effect on loudness.
@richardjhgraham
@richardjhgraham 3 года назад
@@TheToneLounge good point about off-axis sound. I think the proof is in the pudding, though: in this case, it seems that a close mic that's on one speaker of a pair is no louder than the same mic on a single speaker. I think it will depend largely on the distance between the SM57 and the speaker it's aimed at too. If it's right up to the grill, the inverse square law is going to mean that 99% of the sound it picks up is coming from just that speaker. If you back it out to 12 inches, you're definitely going to get quite a bit of the second speaker. One more thought: if both cabs are fed by a 15 watt amp, those 15 watts are being split two ways in the dual-speaker configuration, meaning that the single-speaker might actually end up being louder than one speaker out of the two-speaker config. Or perhaps these factors cancel each other out?

My initial instinct is to say, "Wow, my AC15 really sucks. I need an AC30 because...(of all of the thing's I'm hearing in comparison)". However, do I need so much bloom? You've explained to me what "boxy" sounds like through your demo, and yes - very "boxy". Does it sound cool, though? Hell yes, and an amp in a room vs. an amp in a band is a whole different story. Do I need to invade the entire space of an ensemble? No, I need to find my place in the ensemble and the 15 seems to know it's place, and would be easier to find than w/ a 30. When I brought my AC15 home, I struggled for that Beatle's Chime which just wasn't going to happen w/ my Strat. In search for my compromised sweet spot I ended up nailing that Brian Jones era Stones tone which was far from disappointing. It was exhilerating to capture the classic and limited tone of an era. It sounds nothing like anything else out there today, and if your looking for something in that direction. Give the 15 a chance. I didn't get the jangly Beatles chime that I was looking for, but what I found was something maybe even better. A lot of people will return Vox amps b/c they don't live up to ultimate expectations. Try looking at it like an Amp rather than a time machine. One way, or another you're going to find what makes these amps so special. They're different. Different is good, even if it differs from what you expected.

You know Terry, it's hard to get the sound of any artist due to the fact that the mic, preamps, console, EQ, Compressor, and tape machines and the room all contribute to the final sound that you hear and love. Expecting your new amp to sound like that is not realistic. However, you can get your own sounds out of that amp that can be just as awesome. My Vox sounds like a Vox should, but I am also getting tones that are not classic tones, and that is what I love about these amps. The diverse range of possible tones at hand. I'm glad that the content on this channel is helping people bond with their amps. These amps are kind of hard to figure out at first, but once you understand them, they are absolutely killer sounding rock machines.

@@TheToneLoungeYou may have misread my reply. Just, in case - I was praising the amp in spite of the criticisms and my personal experience when I bought one. It was very, "Okay, It sounds like I'm not going to get THAT sound out of my Strat, but let's lose some high's, bring up the lo-end and...hey! I like this sound even more!" In my case, some guitar stores that I had a good relationship w/ would keep steering me away from Vox's. Telling me how many guys would bring them back w/in a week, stuff like that. (these guys were aware of sounds I was into, preferences, pedals, etc.) Except, every time I plugged in to one it felt like home. When I finally made up my own mind the guys were all, rolling their eyes, "Okay, see you in a week when you bring it back". I never brought it back. :) I was going to mention the things you added b/c even patch chords influence the tone you get. So, Amen to all of that brother! We seem to forget that you could plug straight into the actual artist's rig of the tone you want and you're still NOT going to sound like them. Influences are cool, but so are you. Somewhere in the middle you'll find your own signature tone, which I think is way cooler than sounding like somebody else. "Funny", wrap up. My friend bought a 2 speaker Dr. Z. I thought it had the coolest tone ever, but my friend was pissed off b/c he couldn't get it to sound like my ORANGE AD-15. A little analogy, as to what we're discussing put in a domestic light over the big time celebrity w/ an entire crew of technician's who also play a big role in the tone your chasing. Stop chasing, start playing, keep searching. These thing's have a way of finding you, as well.

@@terrywitzu7874 I understood, I think I poorly communicated my idea. I should have re-read myself lol. The Orange AD15, is that like a Vox type of amp?
@terrywitzu7874
@terrywitzu7874 3 года назад
@@TheToneLounge I love how quick you guys are to reply! I also just wanted to make sure that I was clear - Lol. The AD-15 is similar in that it's a very weird amp in it's own way. If you remember early 2000's Orange started making amps again, out of nowhere. I was out w/ the actual intention of finding an amp and putting it on lay-away. I had decided on a Vox, or Hiwatt (funny, how Hiwatt's were much easier to find than Vox's at the time). I walk into the very first store and into this strange dimension where there was a single ORANGE head (they hadn't even started building cabinets yet) and a single speaker ORANGE (the AD-15). After a shocked, and pleasant "WTF?" to the entire store they filled me in on how Orange just started up again out of London, were hand-wiring the damn things, and the head and AD15 were all they released so far (they didn't even have the weird heiroglyphic tone controls!). Hell's yes, I grabbed it! It has been compared to the Vox tone-wise, but a little rounder w/ more warmth. The real awesome thing is it's notoriety for being played alongside, or w/ a Vox. (Sorry for the lengthy re-cap). What's weird and frustrating (like the Vox:) is that it's simple Master, Lo, Mid, Hi, Gain interface is much less reactive than other amps w/ the same simple interface. It's like the EQ tends to "shade" the tone rather than dramatically alter it (best way to describe). Simply reducing the Lo for less Bass just doesn't cut it. If you want to reduce the Lo end (in this example) you have to fiddle w/ all 3 EQ's, even the Master and Gain sometimes. This is probably why I was so patient w/ my AC15. The AD15 can be either way too bright, or way too muddy, but once you dial it all in you've got one of the warmest most accomodating amps you've ever heard. I've looked up how the circuitry works and it's way over my head compared to A, AB, and AC (As in 2 page explanation vs. the paragraph it can take to explain the other models). Look it up on-line and you'll find nothing but forums of people crying about why they got rid of their's for a Bad Cat, for eg. They were replaced by that silly "Tiny Terror", and are rare as any amp you could think of (b/c we're all taking our's to our grave). If you see one - GRAB IT! To digress, I've never had the luxury, but there are posted forums that compare the Orange to a Vox. There is a large consensus as to matching these two amps for the "ideal" sound. Whether it's one guitarist playing through both, or two guitarists w/ one playing a Vox and the other an Orange. There's something missing from the abundant Orange models we see now that don't capture the AD15, but I really can't put my finger on it. I don't think there are even vids on the AD15. all in all, I can say that if you like the Vox, you'll like the Orange (AD15, or whatever). You'd also have the luxury of pairing them up which is something you'd really enjoy, I'm sure. Might be worth a vid, as they've been constanty compared and considered soul-mates by a lot of players (not that I want to see you shift your attention away from the Vox). Sorry, if my reply is a bit bombastic. It's an enjoyable conversation, and gear talk amongst players? You know how that goes.:) Final clincher, I have yet to find anyone able to explain to me how AD cuircitry works. Any vids have some idiot referencing the D as "Digital", which is proposterous. Expert-testimony from a guy who is totally winging it with suppositions. So, even the YT guys don't get it either. Haha. :)

Yeah, RU-vid experts are a dime a dozen. I'm no expert, just a dude loving messing around with gear. I bet I would have fun with that AD-15. I use to own a Rocker 30, which was cool but not quite my thing. I would love to give Orange another go. Especially now that I live in the EU. In Canada, Orange are worth a fortune and not all store have them. I heard that Laney has a similar Vox inspired amp too. Gosh, so much gear, so little money lol

Wish they would’ve been same speaker mic’d in both cabs. A speaker is 50% of the sound so if the speakers aren’t the same you might as well compare a Vox to a matchless or something….
