This looks great. This is what I want VR for -- exploration. (And relaxation, sometimes.) When I was a kid, I often wanted to enter book illustrations and participate in those worlds. It looks that is becoming reality.
Right, imo one of the most exciting things with the future of VR is virtually visiting places and doing things you can't do in real life for whatever reason. I think simulators are going to have a lot of success in VR.
I decided to give this game a try and I'm honestly so glad I did. Before I loaded a level I had the idea of turning a fan on to make it even more immersive and it completely changed the game for me. I got so immersed that at one point it was like I could feel the sun on the back of my head as I paddled. This sorta thing (phantom touch) has happened to me before in Vrchat with fire but not like in this game. The warmth from the sun even disappeared as I entered areas with shade - completely insane what the brain can do. If you're looking for another game similar to something like AirCar then this game is perfect!
I've had this happen in Real Fishing VR, too! It's WILD. We live on a lake, so playing on the porch, listening to the lake, the game, the lake, the game--it was downright disconcerting for a bit until I relaxed into it!
pretty sure he got sponsored by them and didn't know about them until recently. However, it is still great to see him reviewing a new game. I will be waiting for more reviews by steam before purchasing; hopefully it stays Very Positive. Seems to have motion sickness issues in the negative reviews.
@@SuperrrSid I have strong "VR Legs" but I can see how it could make you feel motion sickness, for me it's because even at 90FPS the water seems to animate at a different frame rate and when you splash about in it you get the illusion of reprojection.
I've always been wanting more games like this, where you're dropped in a gorgeous environment and just relax. The various meditation apps attempt this but it's not enough to just stare at the world for me; I want to explore it! This game seems like the perfect after-work recovery.
VR -Technology has so much potential, it could be helpful for example for ill people that can´t leave hospitals and can still chat/play/work or children attending classes and learning virtually!
now im just imagining how immersive this could be if you were playing in a pool setup with a stationary kayak and waterproof controllers you put at the ends of a rod. i know its absurd but imagine
This looks like a must. My kayak out in the garage needs a new skin. Between that, work and a back injury it has been unused 15 years. The penguin meeting in actual reality is memorable. I had one swim up to me and then just float there and stare.
WOW!!! Mike, this is outstanding - I don't want to sound like a "snob", but to me there have been way too many kiddie like VR games, and not enough AAA titles like Half Life Alex... But being a graphics fiend, I am so impressed with this title. [:]-)

I've just given it a short 20 minute test over 2 days, just to check it out, not done much exploring. and I'm super impressed with some of that texture work, rock in particular looks so real, the wet cliffs in the Bjørnøya map looks fantastic, same with the rocks on the Costa Rica map, was also hugely impressed with the greenery and palms on the Costa Rica map.
Buying it this afternoon. It was on my mind, and I saw this video showcasing some new content. I am getting it to show friends and family. The ones showed the demo to already started to understand the appeal of VR for non gamers.
I’ve never done any VR things, but the idea of KAYAKING (which I enjoy in the Spring, Summer, and Fall) is really exciting to me! If anything convinces me to buy VR devices, it is the idea of kayaking VR.
This is what VR ought to be. Bought this on Steam black Friday sale. Not holding my breath that minimum spec 1070 is going deliver what is presented on screen here
I’ve just purchased this, I put my headset on and was like I can’t deal with this British heatwave and headset on my hot face and kayaking. I’ve set my alarm for 4am so I can play when it’s cooler.
I did my rig of controllers with a sawed off metal broom stick. Pay attention to the orientation of the rings on the controllers facing your headset. Of course you have to have good lighting in the room for them not to loose tracking. I did from time to time. I had to use gaffer tape to keep the controllers from sliding out because I do not have the foam grips that Mike has. It was not enough to have the tie wraps. Make sure you play space is large enough for you to row. Have somebody in your family or friend check the space around you while you are in headset that you don't hit the wall or something. There is no resistance on the oars as you row, so the feeling of rowing is not there. There is a section in the menu of the game to make certain adjustments for doing this setup. Check those out by pressing A on your right controller. Do not drop your controllers. They are very hard to replace and expensive. The maps have a border that will return you to your start point. Out of bounds kind of thing. 4 maps you get with this game. The visuals are impressive, but is 2017, developer Ninja Theory released of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice still tops my list. My two cents. These type of VR experiences are cool and all, but they are also my biggest problem with VR. $33 (here in Australia) for what is effectively a tech demo is just not something I can justify when there are so many pancake games that offer 1000x the content for less.
I’m getting this probably tomorrow once my paycheck comes In because this looks epic!! Also wondering if you can do another updated emu vr video or even a livestream with viewers being able to join with the new netplay ability. Something like a Mario party live stream sort of thing.
I remembered the documentary of the survival guy who sail the ocean and almost died this will be epic imagine to experience those in VR. Storm crashing wake.. damn
I own a real Mirage Kayak and a Skee carbon fiber paddle. I can't use it any more as my knees are buggered with arthritis. This is going to be my next purchase. Awesome.
wow this looks awesome! and your right if there was multiplayer with this it would be amazing! Is there a way to convert the padle to a rower so you can use in conjunction with a rowing machine?
I can say, from firsthand experience with kayaking IRL, that steering and controlling the kayak felt VERY realistic in the fjord, but unrealistically easy in the swimming pool demo.
Curious before I buy, as a kayaker the paddling action, (consistency, turning and such) and speed didn't like too accurate in this vid, how did you find it.
@@jaxr2958 as someone who kayaks as well i found this very realistic,in the settings you can adjust how realistic you want it,including adjusting how quick the kayak turns with movement.highly recommend this

Just downloaded today, was praying for a decent kayak game and this is it ! Absolutely love this game, and am eager for more maps, such as lake district ? Cornwall ? Scotland ? or US inland and west coast ? Kayak VR is on a level with VR Fishing, excellent graphics and total immersion. Your review sold it to me, well done.
Thank You for this video!!! Due to health issues I can't kayak anymore. The physics are great!!! My right stroke is stronger than my left & I would veer to the left. This game does the same thing!!!!! I Love It!!! I had a Seda Glider (19 1/2') with winged paddles & this game in arcade mode feels very much the same!!! Thank you again!!!! Now I wish they would add a Rudder mode to help keep me straight.
Love it. That in game option of pixel density should be in every PCVR game. This game is super well optimized; which impressed me more when you informed me this was done by a 3 man team. this game needs a modding community and support. add guns (kayak mario kart?), kayak wave surfing/ tony hawk, space map, the options are endless and wild.
There's higher chance of me visiting Costa Rica and enjoying that place IRL than making this work wirelessly without any input lag or other problems. 😬

Would be cool to put your chair in a small pool and strap your controllers to a real paddle... then you can actually push some water while paddling for next level immersion :p

Hi Mike....would have been a nice touch to show us how you added the controllers to the pole you used as a oar. Looks like you used a monopod for a camera with zip ties. I will give it a try. Thanks for the heads up on this experience.
I was happily able to test since their test versions were out ( alpha / beta versions ) and back then it was already amazing. There was only 1 level. But now with more bioms to discover - it is worth every penny!
I was thinking of a hiking game with character customization. A couple of cameras and great scenery with options around the world. This makes me think that's possible
@@mclarenrob2 possibly BUT there really isn’t a lot of launch games and most are silly kids games. So for £15 I’m more then happy to take a chance on it. It may be a great way to relax after a long day. Not only this but what can £15 buy now days? Maybe a large pizza?
