Thanks guys! Just a minor correction, Jade is not a totally "wild" resource. You can use it to substitute Camels or Money (1:1), thought not Pepper, Silk or Gold...

Thanks for doing this comparison! I've always felt a little guilty for not loving Marco Polo as much as I'm evidently supposed to as a Eurogamer. It just ends too quickly, the travel is absurdly difficult (and the objective cards are totally random, and sometimes pretty much impossible).... This looks like it might be more to my liking.

Mentat1231 i have the same feeling about the voyage of marco polo. Travelling is sooo difficult. Feels like the contracts are the way to go and that feeling makes me not liking it that much. But i like the gameplay and how the dice work etc. Im on the fence with marco polo II but maybe its the ‘better’ version? Have to watch more reviews when it comes out.

Already played MP2. The new mechanics give new life to the game and they fixed those f.... resource tokens. Now the big ones are much larger than the small ones, avoiding confusion. There are manuals fully in English thus you can import the German version without problems and don't need to wait months for localization.

Is the new game also five rounds or is the endgame triggered differently? Are the characters as fantastically gamebreaking as the ones in the original? Really look forward to getting this one, the original is one of my favourite games!

The game will last for 5 Rounds. It's too early to say on the characters but they definitely aren't as unbalanced as the original. The 2p game of the original can feel very lopsided with the wrong goal cards and character combinations.

Great comparison. I assume you draft characters during the start of a MP game? That obviously helps. I don't know if they are overpowered, but I can agree that some either don't work that well at 2 or in a few cases seem too powerful with the expansion. That said, I do enjoy that game a lot to the point I have a customized insert and all the content. Although I really want to play MP2 I don't know if it's worth buying. This is just my opinion, but I really wish they would have come up with a whole different theme. It just doesn't seem to be different enough to justify spending more when I have so much content for the first. I like how difficult it was to travel and reach your goals in the first. Movement in this one (I may be wrong) seems to be easier. I do love that there is a changing market, the concept of the guilds and the scoring for the different flags.

I would agree with this point...the games look awfully familiar in gameplay and theme, so it might be hard for people to justify the purchase. Give it a play at least...I think you will like it.

How much cross compatibility are there between the two games? What can be brought over from the original Marco Polo?

The two are not cross compatible for a variety of reasons.

@@meeple This is not true. The rules state that there is. They dont wamt to burn themselves so they put a disclaimer ablutnthe balance when using the games together. The game has placed the Ying Yang symbols on its components to keep the games apart. If you want you cannuse characters from MP 1 in MP2. You can use the Venice expanion board and some other module from the expansion. And you could also use the city bonusess from MP1 in MP2. That being said, I dont see muchbuse for it and balance will be an issue I think.
