Alexandre Desplat is my all time favorite film composer. His work is immediately recognizable which is something I think is essential for a contemporary composer to be able to do. Whether intended or not. When you hear it for the first time, you recognize the style, the orchestration, the habits of the individual that are inherent in their personality. It all comes out in their music. No matter what the situation or application is,... you know it's them. I love that.
Well said man! I completely agree with everything you said, he is also my favorite of all time too for that same reason. Looking forward, and I am sure you are too, to see what he does for Godzilla.
Samuel Diaz That's gonna be fun! I hope the film is worthy of the composer.

More than John Williams? :) I've found all these interviews just delightful and I just envy them all!!! These guys have dream jobs, but one can say watching Desplat that this is HARD hard work. And fun. And again hard work. LOL (And I'm sure tempted about buying VSL, some marvelous sounds they have...) regards!
André Fadel Wow u are right! how could i forget John Williams! :-O ok Desplat is my second favorite composer haha and i agree watching this tempts me to invest in more vsl libraries, now if only they werent all soo freaking ridiculously expensive lol!
Dang. I needed to hear that at the beginning. Every thing he says is so true. Like, the click being a frustration. Drawing tempo is interesting, but feels backwards to me. But the part about living "like a samurai" - I now work long hours too, every day from AM to PM, with little time left for anything or anybody. Was starting to question this lifestyle because I thought I was the only one for some reason! The DIY aesthetic is not for unmotivated people, that's for sure. Crazy. Anyway, carry on. All of these VSL interviews are really good.
Great interview from one of the best composers going around. Very much has his own identity and an old school approach. And those words regarding temp music ring true. I think all composers have a love/hate relationship with the temp track!
I'm glad you like it, Dmitry! This IS the full version...

The Viennakey arrived! hooray! Tomorrow I'm going to test it, I hope! :) Just got the standard orchestra bundle. I agree with what you said, chris, but unfortunately I still don't have an orchestra available to record my orchestral pieces. Besides, maybe the final result is better with the use of the software (because the symphonic group of my city isn't THAT qualified...). I'm putting high hopes in MIDI technology. regards
