I purchased this amplifier as a kit, without valves, which I sourced locally.
Kit is available here: www.tubes4hifi....
The ST-120 is a higher power version (60W/ch) of the VTA ST-70, which is based on the 1959 Dynaco ST-70, with some modern improvements.
This is a cost effective way to obtain a brand new "vintage" valve amplifier, without any of the age related problems that come with buying a 60 year old amplifier.

Proud owner of VTA ST-120 since 2018, assembled it myself, absolutely love it. Use it to drive my 20-year old Altec A7 VOTT, also built by me. Gold Lion KT-88s on-board and now, as of last week, an auto-bias board.

In the original Dynaco designs, the octal sockets were there to connect a preamp directly. It was carried over from the older mono days. The Dynakit PAM1 had this cable that used the socket. The Dynakit Mark III and Mark IV also had this feature. There were monoblocks.

Glad you are liking it. Do you have the solid state rectifier, or valve type? Mine is valve and I blew it up in the first week by cycling the power too quickly. I therefore made the "Yellow Page" mod to add a diode in series.
@dhelton40
@dhelton40 Год назад
The socket for the preamp power is really dated, but it provides test points for power and bias. In the 1960's many of these were installed in custom cabinets/consoles. It was common to use the B plus and filiment supply from the amplifier to power the preamp. Today, most will agree that bringing high voltage outside the amplifier is not very safe. I would build this with access to the 4 & 8 ohm speaker taps, you never know which you will need.
@audionautica6843
@audionautica6843 Год назад
Good point. BTW, the current version of this kit runs both the 4 & 8 ohm taps to speaker posts on the rear. As you note - a good thing to have!

Thanks for this video. So few people seem to be aware of VTA products and their staggering value for money. I have my mind set on the VTA SP-14 Preamp that is noted for it's world-class sound quality. Unfortunately my speakers require more power than the ST-120 can deliver. I know that they also have a pair of higher power monoblocks, but as you stated, the sound is a little more laid back and rounded. Nothing wrong with that, though I hope to end up with some monoblocks with a more modern sound signature, with very tight bottom end, plenty of punch as well as speed. But all of the VTA products are top shelf as far as I'm concerned and anyone looking to add some of those sweet, sweet valves to their system will not be disappointed with anything they have on offer.

@kastlrock557 2 года назад
@@audionautica6843 I’m going with the solid state for now with the trd, I was really thinking of going with the tube but would like to hear someone’s opinion who has had both! I have the yellow page mod saved if I go with a tube rectifier. I think it may be a while before I try the tube as they have just skyrocketed over the past week. Do you have an opinion on the two options? Also I noticed the power cord is two prong, I have a feeling that I may not be able to run the power through my power conditioner?
@audionautica6843
@audionautica6843 2 года назад
@@kastlrock557 Mine came without a power cord, as I had to provide my own Australian power cord, and the directions gave the option of earthed or unearthed. I would imagine you could have it earthed if you wanted to by changing the power cord. I went with the tube rectifier simply because I thought that a solid state rectifier is a bit counter-intuitive in a tube amp! That's the only reason. But then, you really need the yellow page mod, which is a silicon diode in series with the tube rectifier, so it isn't so purist any more, is it? There should be no difference in sound quality whatever. I'm an electronics engineer and I think people who talk about tube rolling rectifiers are on jungle juice. Given the shortage/price of tubes you have identified I think the solid state option is the right way to go. I have plenty of rectifiers on the shelf for my own use, but time again I probably would have gone S/S. Also, many people report that for high output levels they go through rectifier tubes pretty quickly.
@kastlrock557
@kastlrock557 2 года назад
@@audionautica6843 For high output levels, I could see someone going through rectifier tubes! For my klipsch belles at 103db sensitivity, a tube rectifier might last a touch longer. It’s hard seeing a spot for a tube and not putting a tube there 😄 it’s definitely not purists, but it’s all relative right? Some purists might say it’s not a real tube amp cause it’s not point-to-point wiring!!! Solid state makes sense, and I will run it for now with the timer delay, but it’s a open spot for another beautiful tube and maybe when things become normal, I will try the tube. For now I gotta build it mate.
@shodan6401
@shodan6401 2 года назад
@Audio Nautica Regarding tube rectification, there are those who say that changing the rectifier tube makes no difference and others who swear by it. Here's the skinny: changing the rectifier tube is not an "Oh my god!" moment. Not like changing speakers or even like changing output tubes. The differences between tubes is subtle. It all comes down to how well trained your ears are. And just like anything else, training your ears can be learned. I first started working in audio in the late 80s and when I started I simply didn't know how to listen and my ears were not sensitive to subtle differences. But I learned and at one point I could tell when tone controls were switched in or out of a circuit, even when they weren't engaged. Thirty five years later, I doubt my ears are still that sensitive. BUT, changing rectifier tubes does make an audible difference, it just may not be worth the expense for such subtle changes. For those with very trained listening skills, to them the differences will seem much more obvious and worth the expense for the enjoyment of getting different results. They are not crazy - not by any stretch - they just have higher sensitivity and appreciation. One thing that virtually anyone who is into audio can listen for as they tube roll the rectifier is for differences in the soundstage - holographics, width, depth, etc. The most obvious changes can be heard there.

Nice, very nice, I built the VTA 70 version and run KT88s. I added the yellow sheet diode mod to my GZ34, I'll see what happens when we have a strom that creates a rapid restart. I really enjoy the 70, I grew up with dynacos because I was not rich so the tube sound is what I still want to hear. Thanks for great video! BTW, I run mine on a variac because the transformers are wound for 117 VAC but voltage here can go to123VAC (hello red plate)!

I built my 120 in 2011. I went with volume knob, in my opinion you need that! makes life easier. It goes where mono switch is, why would you need that? The only issue I have with the amp is if you crank it all the time you will go through rectifier tubes every 6 months or so. I went with Weber copper top solid state rectifier to help but I preferred sound of tube rectifier. Other issue for me is KT88 are only good for 1 1/2 years at best if you play loud often. I was wondering how the KT120s hold up. Plus with this crap with Russia if tubes are going to be available anymore? Good capacitors also as the best are made there. Now with KT120 do you set bias the same? I would set bias at .50v rather than .550v as that gave better KT88 life, plus rectifier life. Also if you use solid state rectifier you need turn on timer option for it delays high voltage to tubes before they warm up. Not that hard to build with some solder knowledge and basic electronics smarts you are good to go. Took about 5 evenings to build, painting transformers the biggest pain! In all a very good sounding amp, any thing I play sounds fantastic! Good to see Bob L. is still with us! I'm an old fart also. Hey Bob, enjoy retirement, I am!.
@audionautica6843
@audionautica6843 2 года назад
Thanks for your comments and experience on long term use. I generally don't listen loud. My speakers are very efficient JBL studio monitors, so I can't go near the power rating of the amp. I am still on the original (well, second actually as I flashed the first one) rectifier tube and KT120s. Can't remember what bias I am running, but I would think a KT120 would have longer life at the same bias compared to a KT88.

Not sure where you live but I live in Australia where the nominal house voltage is 240V AC. I bough tthe 240V kit. During the build I went through a couple of rectifiers and when I measured the house input voltage it was around 255V. I have solar panels on the roof and I'm told that they need to have an output voltage > line voltage if power is to be transferred to the grid,. This could be the reason i went through rectifiers. Not sure if this is correct . However I now run my ST120 with a variac that I have set to 230V. Its been 3 years now since i had to replace a rectifier. I'd have to honest and say that it is not driven hard or frequently however so far so good. I'm very pleased with it.

I benefited greatly from his assistance with the few issues I had. I am confident, however, that brand is still well supported.
